Wu Rong wrinkled his nose.
Rao Jie exclaimed in disbelief, "Is that true?"
Wu Rong replied confidently, "I'm not happy! He's a guy!"
"He's... still a child!"
"..."
"What a narrow-minded guy!"
The consequence of Rao Jie's outburst was that after the child was sent away, she found herself unable to get out of bed the next day.
On another occasion, a male classmate from West Point Academy gifted Rao Jie two tickets to the opera, recommending that she go see a musical performance. Excitedly, Rao Jie rushed home to tell Wu Rong about it, only for the tickets to be tossed into the trash moments later.
Rao Jie, feeling utterly defeated, exclaimed, "How jealous can you be! He already has someone he can date; he's just our friend. He gave us the extra tickets because he helped me with an umbrella once when it rained! What exactly are you doubting?"
"I never doubted anything," Wu Rong said sincerely.
"Then why..." Rao Jie was even more confused.
"You can be jealous without doubting!" Wu Rong said nonchalantly.
His boldness left Rao Jie at a loss for words. So they ended up not going to the opera after all. Wu Rong's unreasonable jealousy frustrated Rao Jie, who could only try to educate him slowly. Unfortunately, her efforts were in vain when they faced a major crisis.
Senior Long Yong came to Cambridge with their school's mathematics research team. With Long Yong's arrival, it was only natural for Wu Rong and Rao Jie to treat him to dinner. However, Wu Rong stubbornly opposed dining together, regretting even their casual chat during a previous encounter at school. Watching his wife laugh and chat with her former suitor was an indescribable heartache for him; yet Rao Jie accused him of being petty, which only made him more determined to be stingy—after all, he didn't want to bear that label without reason.
Rao Jie noticed Wu Rong's firm disapproval but felt that such behavior was quite rude. One evening when Wu Rong was working late, Long Yong reached out to Rao Jie, prompting her to give in and directly invite him to a restaurant that she and Wu Rong loved.
After finishing dinner, Rao Jie realized that she had missed many calls from Wu Rong. In the end, Long Yong still drove her back.
Feeling anxious, Rao Jie entered the room and saw Wu Rong sitting on the sofa. She nervously explained the situation. Wu Rong remained silent, listening to a piano piece while fiddling with a Rubik's Cube. Dozens of cubes of various sizes were scattered across the table, and he solved them one by one. It was evident that he was under immense pressure.
Rao Jie tried her best to avoid using words that might provoke his anger, being cautious and fearful of upsetting him. Wu Rong slowly lifted his head after solving the last cube and looked at Rao Jie, asking, "Are you happy?"
With a smile, Rao Jie replied, "I would only be happy if you were here. This is just a necessary formality."
Wu Rong squinted at her and said, "Say you like me ten times. You must say it with deep emotion, seriously and affirmatively. Go on!"
Rao Jie thought to herself that this request was manageable; she had grown numb to such things. Following his instructions, she recited the lines, feeling embarrassed after finishing.
"Say you only like me, that I’m the only one in your heart, the only one in your eyes, that you think of only me..."
Rao Jie quickly interrupted him, deciding to take a bold step. She straddled Wu Rong's lap, wrapped her arms around his shoulders, and kissed him deeply to silence him.
As the kiss ended, Rao Jie weakly asked, "Is that enough?"
Wu Rong's gaze deepened as he replied, "Not enough!"
