When should the dream begin? 0

It was a sunny day in mid-May, with the air filled with the fresh scent of early summer. For me, a vocational high school student at the time, this was a moment when my academic journey was nearing its end. I was filled with joy and infinite anticipation for my future life, immersing myself in a sea of dreams every day. 0

During those days, images of smoothly finding a desired job after graduation constantly floated in my mind. I imagined myself working hard in the workplace, standing out among my peers. At the same time, I seriously contemplated how to carefully plan my future path and how to achieve the goals and ideals I held in my heart step by step. However, just as I was eagerly envisioning my future, an unexpected and overwhelming disaster—the Wenchuan Earthquake—struck like a bolt from the blue, completely shattering and rewriting everything. 0

My hometown wasn't large or particularly prosperous, but we lived a carefree life. That day began like any other, following our usual routine. As I was a day student, after lunch, I gathered with a few classmates to go online and pass the time. While we were all immersed in the joy of gaming, suddenly the computers began to shake. At first, we thought nothing of it; one of my friends joked that we were getting too excited and shaking the table, which made everyone in the internet café laugh. But the shaking didn't stop; it grew stronger. At that moment, we sensed something was wrong but remained silent. Suddenly, someone shouted that there was an earthquake and urged everyone to run. A large crowd quickly surged out of the internet café and onto the street. Outside, we found ourselves surrounded by people amid the sound of shaking glass from above, heavy objects crashing to the ground, and the chaotic noise of the crowd mixed with some terrified screams. It was all a complete mess. In that moment, I suddenly felt as if I were witnessing scenes from movies come to life—so powerful and terrifying. 0

After a brief calm, as class time approached, my friends and I hurried back to school. That afternoon, our school organized everyone to stay on the playground for safety. My emotions were complex; I tried countless times to call home but couldn't get through. I wondered what I could do at that moment or how I could help others. After many anxious attempts, I finally got through and learned that my family was safe, which eased some of my complicated feelings. 0

Later on, when I accidentally turned on the television, I was stunned by the continuous footage of devastation being broadcasted. The screen was filled with horrific scenes of destruction caused by the earthquake in the Wenchuan Region. Flipping through newspapers from that day revealed similar overwhelming reports everywhere. Through these media broadcasts, I truly realized how severe and destructive this disaster was. 0

At that time, I was still attending vocational high school. Compared to other stages of education, vocational studies came with relatively less pressure and more free time. Thus, deep within me, a seed of desire to help the people in the disaster area began to quietly sprout. After some reflection, I decided to discuss with my good friend Fat Brother about volunteering. 0

During those days, we witnessed ambulances racing into our local hospital every day, carrying waves of earthquake victims. Watching those suffering patients groaning in pain made us students realize that although we didn't have much money to donate, we still wanted to contribute our efforts. We decided to save our pocket money to buy some fruits and bottled water to send to the hospital and voluntarily distribute food and drinks to the injured there. When we encountered patients who had difficulty moving or needed special care, we proactively stepped forward to help them, hoping to provide even a little warmth and comfort. 0

Moreover, our school actively responded by organizing a fundraising event across the campus. Students generously opened their wallets; I donated all my pocket money saved over a month. Although this amount might only be a drop in the bucket for disaster relief efforts, every cent carried our deep concern and blessings for the people in the disaster area. 0

Thus, during that difficult time, each of us contributed our love and care for our fellow citizens in Wenchuan Region in whatever way we could manage. 0
