"Actually, your mother raised you to this age, which shows she has some affection for you. Look, you don't even have calluses on your hands; she must not have let you do chores." Yan Chengcheng reached out and poked at my fingers.
"Love leaves marks. Even if you can't see or touch it, when it passes by, you can feel it."
I didn't know if she was talking about me or herself. All I knew was that she saw me crying and looked a bit flustered. She quickly pulled out a tissue to wipe my face.
"Don't cry anymore. From now on, I'll take care of you, okay?"
"Okay!" I wiped my tears and looked at her. "Thank you."
"No need to thank me; after all, I got first place!" Yan Chengcheng smiled. "If you ever have homework you don't understand, you can come to me."
In the director's office, Madam Ye asked me, "Cheng Ze, which child do you think we should adopt?"
I knew she was referring to me and Yan Chengcheng.
"I think the child who got first place is quite good," I said, feigning calmness.
"Only children with good grades deserve to enter the Ye Family. Besides, I've heard she loves studying. Coming to the Ye Family, she can have the computer she's always wanted."
I recited a line that wealthy families liked to hear. Madam Ye seemed satisfied and went to handle the paperwork.
Soon, I saw Yan Chengcheng.
She arrived in a luxury car.
I appeared calm on the surface, but inside, I was overwhelmed with emotion.
I kept glancing out the window, afraid of missing her arrival.
Finally, I spotted her downstairs.
I was stunned.
She saw me too.
I was on the upper floor, and she was below.
I could clearly see the tears at the corners of her eyes.
“Brother, welcome home!”
Yan Chengcheng opened her arms and embraced me with tears in her eyes.
“Madam, please rest assured, I will take good care of my brother,” she said as she released me and looked at Madam Ye with sincerity written all over her face.
Despite her expression showing no cracks, and her tone being exceptionally warm, I knew that the person standing before me was not truly her.
But there was nothing I could do; I had to play along.
Qin Lanlan, a girl who craved vanity and had no boundaries.
With sweet words, she managed to charm Madam Ye, making it seem as though she was the beloved daughter of the Ye Family.
But I knew better; she was not that person.
More than once, when I woke up in the middle of the night to find her on the phone, I heard her complaining about Madam Ye.
“That old hag who can’t even bear children doesn’t deserve my daily flattery.”
Qin Lanlan and Yan Chengcheng were completely different kinds of people.
Yan Chengcheng was self-reliant and strong-willed; all her scholarships were earned through her own efforts. In the end, she was accepted into a prestigious university. I took her as my goal and managed to get into the same university.
After my parents passed away, Qin Lanlan inherited their fortune. She showed no signs of sorrow and flew abroad that very day, indulging in extravagant spending. I didn’t feel anything about it; it was only natural.
That day, I got completely drunk, and it was a classmate who brought me back. When I opened the door, a girl stood in the hall, looking utterly confused. She was wearing Qin Lanlan's clothes and carrying her Hermes bag. I immediately knew that Qin Lanlan had deceived her, making her believe she was Qin Lanlan.
"Who are you?" she asked.
I was taken aback; it turned out Yan Chengcheng had forgotten me. I felt a surge of anger—how could she forget? The first time we met, I fell into a pond, and she was at a loss for what to do. Although I was the one who eventually pulled her out, how could she forget me?
Never mind; who was I to hold on to those memories while she moved on? I reached out and cornered her against the wall.
"Who am I? I'm the Shang Haoran you're looking for, twenty years old this year."
