I trembled all over, and the spatula slipped from my hand, clattering to the bottom of the pot.
This is bad.
I had always thought Mei Bao was a girl.
But it turns out Mei Bao is my boss?
How is that possible?
I stared at the man in front of me, disbelief etched on my face.
He was dressed in a well-tailored suit, with the top two buttons of his shirt undone.
His delicate collarbone peeked out, adding an extra touch of allure.
Fu Xi leisurely wiped his mouth with a napkin and looked up at me.
"Your cooking is delicious."
I snapped back to reality and quickly forced a smile.
"Thank you, I'm glad you like it."
"If you like it, then please have more."
I racked my brain to change the subject, hoping to ease the awkwardness.
But all I could think about were my best friend's complaints about Fu Xi:
"This old man is just an exploiting capitalist."
"He makes us work overtime every day and even deducts our pay."
"It's infuriating!"
Yet the refined and polite man before me was hard to reconcile with the image of an exploiting capitalist.
I stole a glance at Fu Xi.
Until he noticed my gaze and smiled, asking me,
"Do I look good?"
I unconsciously nodded, "You look good."
Only after saying it did I realize what I had just blurted out.
Oh no!
I quickly covered my mouth, wishing I could find a crack in the ground to hide in.
How embarrassing!
Flustered, I hurriedly gathered my things. "Um, I’ll be going now."
"Take your time eating," he replied.
Without waiting for Fu Xi to respond, I rushed out in a panic.
After leaving Fu Xi's place, the more I thought about it, the more something felt off.
Why hadn’t my best friend told me that Mei Bao was actually the boss?
I pulled out my phone and immediately called my friend Xu Yujun.
"Hey, why didn't you tell me that Mei Bao is the boss?"
I questioned her in a hushed tone.
Xu Yujun's voice came through the receiver:
"What do you mean?"
"Ranran, what are you talking about?"
I paused for a moment and then recounted everything that had just happened.
“Hahahahaha!”
Xu Yujun laughed uncontrollably.
“Did you really go to be Fu Xi’s nanny?”
I was confused as she mocked me for quite a while.
Only then did I realize it was all a misunderstanding.
Xu Yujun didn’t have a younger sister at all.
When Xu Yujun mentioned that I needed to take care of Mei Bao, or I would lose my job, it was because she was the one who had to serve her boss, Fu Xi.
Before her business trip, she intended to find a nanny to take care of her boss.
But unexpectedly, Fu Xi had taken her place at a drinking event and ended up with a perforated ulcer.
Out of gratitude, Xu Yujun agreed to help Fu Xi find a nanny.
Meanwhile, her real younger sister was busy preparing for graduate school exams and living in the dormitory, with no time to come home.
To fulfill her task, Xu Yujun had no choice but to ask me to be the nanny at her boss's house.
I felt utterly defeated: “…”
After all this fuss, I turned out to be the biggest fool.
I suddenly felt weak all over.
Yet Xu Yujun was pleading with me over the phone:
“Ranran, please help me cook for my boss for just seven more days.”
“If you don’t agree, I might lose my job!”
She sweetly rubbed against me: “I’m begging you.”
“Fu Xi has been praising you, saying I found a capable little nanny.”
"This will be beneficial for my promotion and salary increase!"
I hesitated for a few seconds, but ultimately agreed.
What could I do? I had such an unreliable best friend.
The next day, I returned to Fu Xi's house to cook again.
This time, Fu Xi seemed much more at ease with my presence.
He even gave me a slight smile.
In that instant, I recalled the note I had left when I delivered the lounge chair.
Oh no!
How embarrassing!
I shrank my neck, too shy to look at him.
"Um, I..."
Fu Xi pointed to the refrigerator. "I've prepared all the ingredients; you can use whatever you like."
"Okay," I nodded, watching him turn and sit down on the lounge chair by the floor-to-ceiling window.
He picked up a magazine and began to read.
