At the New Year's Eve dinner, Sister-in-law was pushing her food around with her chopsticks, looking quite unhappy.
"Sister-in-law, are you doing this on purpose? Who are you trying to feed with such bland food?"
Her voice was sharp, and she shot me a sideways glance.
The word "on purpose" felt like a thorn stuck in my throat.
Zhang Heng always spoiled her, so Sister-in-law had gotten used to showing off in front of me.
Mother-in-law chimed in, "Jingjing, Sister-in-law likes sweet and sour ribs; why don't you make a dish for her?"
I pointed to the braised ribs on the table. "Mom, isn't that plate ribs?"
Besides, sweet and sour ribs and braised ribs are made differently.
Mother-in-law's expression darkened, and her tone became more serious. "Xiao Qiu wants sweet and sour ribs!"
Her frowning and glaring startled me.
Just a moment ago, she had been smiling and telling Sister-in-law to "eat more," but her mood changed faster than a Sichuan opera performance.
Sister-in-law also put on a sullen face. "Sister-in-law, are you doing this on purpose? I'm your sister after all; how can you not even let me have some meat?"
There was clearly meat on the table, but she insisted on picking at my faults.
Mother-in-law patted her hand soothingly. "Let Xiao Qiu have whatever she wants; just let her make it. Jingjing, why are you still standing there? Hurry up and make it!"
"Mom, there’s plenty of food already; do we really need to make more?"
The mother-in-law frowned, "If I tell you to do it, just do it. Why so much nonsense?"
Sister-in-law shot me a smug glance.
Zhang Heng tried to mediate, "Come on, let’s eat first."
But the mother-in-law slammed her chopsticks on the table, "All you think about is eating! Have you forgotten about me and my daughter? You marry a wife and forget your mother! Xiao Qiu only wants to go home for the New Year because she feels lonely. Are you really going to bully her like this?"
The mother-in-law had always been harsh on me, but she showed a different face when it came to her own daughter.
I clenched my chopsticks tightly, trying to control my emotions.
Zhang Heng opened his mouth, seemingly wanting to explain, "Mom, that's not what I meant..."
The mother-in-law interrupted him, "What did you say when you brought Jingjing home? It hasn’t been long and you’ve already turned your back on us! Have you forgotten how hard your mother has worked outside?"
As she spoke, she became increasingly agitated and started wiping away tears.
Sister-in-law joined in with soft sobs.
Zhang Heng was at a loss for words, "Mom, please don’t cry."
I couldn’t help but question Zhang Heng, "Zhang Heng, you promised me that we would support each other in this family."
Zhang Heng hesitated as he looked at me, his gaze flickering uncertainly.
The mother-in-law snorted coldly, "Tang Jing, just look at yourself! Which new bride is as headstrong as you? Your upbringing is poor; once you enter your in-laws' home, you should be obedient, sensible, and compliant."
Hearing my mother-in-law say that my parents hadn't raised me well, a surge of anger instantly shot to my head.
I stood up abruptly and retorted loudly, "Mom, how can you say that about my parents?"
My father-in-law joined the fray, "Tang Jing, how dare you talk back to your elders right after entering our home! It’s a miracle my son could marry you; it must be because your family’s ancestors are smiling down on you! If you don’t know how to cherish this, then get out of our house!"
His words hit me like a heavy blow.
Zhang Heng's expression also changed, his gaze turning cold. "Tang Jing, apologize to my parents and sister right now!"
I looked at Zhang Heng in disbelief. "You want me to apologize to them?"
Zhang Heng's eyes were firm. "Yes! If you don't apologize, don't even think about coming home!"
I was so furious that I trembled all over and raised my hand to slap him hard.
Zhang Heng was stunned by the blow.
I shouted, "If you have the guts, say it again!"
My sister-in-law stood up with a smirk. "Tang Jing, I really like your temper! I love your kind of personality!"
