She touched my wrist with a pained expression.
There was a cut on my wrist, a result of being scratched by a broken bowl.
I had been too angry to feel any pain just moments ago.
My sister-in-law pulled out a tissue to wipe away the blood, leaning in to take a closer look. "It's not too serious, thankfully."
Tears filled my eyes as I choked out, "Sister-in-law..."
She rolled her eyes at my mother-in-law and father-in-law. "You two really did a great job raising such a daughter and son!"
She pulled me back to the dining table. "It's New Year's Eve; let's pay our respects to the elders."
Suddenly, my sister-in-law stood up and flipped the entire table over.
Grease splattered everywhere, and soup sloshed around.
Amid the sound of breaking dishes, my father-in-law, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, and Zhang Heng all gasped in shock.
The scene descended into chaos.
I stood frozen beside my sister-in-law, at a loss for what to do.
Hot oil splattered onto my wrist, making me gasp in pain.
My father-in-law wiped soup off his face and shouted angrily, "You brat! Are you rebelling against us?"
My mother-in-law and sister-in-law looked at her in fear, not daring to speak.
The Sister-in-law slowly wiped the grease off her hands and said, "Dad, why do you only know this one phrase?"
"Besides this phrase, what else can you say?"
"Is it useful?"
The Father-in-law choked up, his face turning red.
He then turned to glare at his elder brother, Zhang Peng. "Zhang Peng, look at your good wife! Your wife is so uncultured, can't you do something about it?"
The Sister-in-law scoffed, "I've heard that line at least ten times; I'm already sick of it!"
The Mother-in-law snapped back to reality and forced a smile. "Eldest Daughter-in-law, why are you suddenly so angry? Let's all talk nicely."
The Sister-in-law coldly replied, "Mom, what you just said was directed at Jingjing. I'm not her; I don't have that kind of tolerance!"
Gathering her courage, the Sister-in-law interjected, "Sister-in-law, even if you have grievances, you can't just flip the table like that."
"My mom has worked hard to raise our family; how can you treat her like this?"
The Sister-in-law retorted, "Xiao Qiu, stop flattering your mom! Yes, she raised a son and a daughter, but Jingjing is not your mom's daughter!"
The Sister-in-law's face turned red with anger. "Sister-in-law, you..."
She then looked at me. "Jingjing, you say something."
I took over the conversation. "Sister-in-law, I worked all day to prepare the New Year's Eve dinner for you, and in the end, I’m the one at fault?"
The Sister-in-law paused for a moment. "Sister-in-law, that's not what I meant."
I retorted, "What do you mean by that?"
My sister-in-law hesitated, "As your sister-in-law, shouldn't you be filial to me?"
I interrupted her bluntly, "Don't put words in my mouth! You are my husband's younger sister, and I've only just married into the Zhang family a few days ago. Even if I wanted to be filial, it wouldn't be my place!"
My sister-in-law was left speechless by my response.
Seeing her pale expression, Zhang Heng stepped in to mediate, "Alright, alright, it's New Year's Eve today. Let's all sit down and have a harmonious reunion dinner."
My sister-in-law scoffed, "Reunion dinner? You all bully Jingjing and still expect to celebrate the New Year? Not a chance!"
Her words struck me like a heavy blow.
I turned to Zhang Heng, "You..."
Zhang Heng looked flustered and didn't dare meet my gaze.
My sister-in-law coldly remarked, "Tang Jing, do you know why Zhang Heng chose you in the first place?"
"When he was drinking with his brother, he admitted that he picked you because you come from an educated family with intellectual parents. He thought a girl like you would be gentle and easy to manage, and wouldn't oppose his mother."
"Zhang Heng said that if he married a strong woman, his mother would create conflicts with your family, making life difficult for everyone."
