Today, I was in a terrible mood at the dinner party.
Aunt Shang was particularly happy to see me and kept discussing project planning at the dinner table.
"Wan Wan, once the project officially starts, the work pressure will be immense. Tomorrow, let A Zhou take you to the mall to buy some health teas for you to drink during late-night work sessions."
"No need, Aunt. The company’s pantry has everything, and ordering takeout is very convenient now."
She smiled and nodded, then turned to my mother: "I've arranged all the office equipment for A Zhou. I’ve ordered everything for Wan Wan too—an ergonomic chair and a 4K monitor, all the best."
"Especially since you’ll be working late nights, I’ve even had him prepare a special break room for Wan Wan, complete with a massage chair and sleeping bag. You don’t have to worry about her workstation anymore."
My mother looked a bit awkward; she probably thought none of this would be useful at the Guangzhou Branch.
But not wanting to embarrass her, my mother politely expressed her gratitude.
Huang Dandan looked quite displeased from the side.
However, Aunt Shang didn’t seem to notice. She continued addressing me and Chen Ruzhou: "Once the project starts, you two will be the closest partners. A Zhou must take good care of Wan Wan and not make her angry again, understood?"
Chen Ruzhou glanced at me dismissively: "Hmph, she’s more than capable; she doesn’t need my help. She can manage her team just fine."
The atmosphere became a bit tense when Huang Dandan suddenly interjected:
"Aunt, my product team will also be involved throughout. Don’t worry; I’ll coordinate well with A Zhou."
"Besides, Su Wan is far away in Guangzhou; it’s not very convenient for her anyway."
Before she could finish, Chen Ruzhou and his parents changed their expressions.
"Guangzhou?"
They asked in unison, looking at me.
Huang Dandan was taken aback: "A Zhou, didn’t you know? An internal email was sent out. Oh right, you’ve been in the United States and probably missed it."
Everyone was staring at me.
I nodded silently under the pressure.
My mother helped me explain,
“Wan Wan suddenly handed in her resignation. She wants to develop at the Guangzhou Branch, where the technical atmosphere is great and it’s a business line she’s interested in.”
Chen Ruzhou didn’t believe it. He grabbed my hand and confirmed again,
“Su Wan, weren’t you going to work on the AI Innovation Project with me? I saw you sign off on the project proposal with my own eyes.”
His grip was painful, and I couldn’t help but get angry:
“Yes, I’m going to Guangzhou. What business is it of yours?”
Chen Ruzhou looked incredulous, then laughed:
“Are you kidding me? You’re someone who jumps into my chair at the sight of a cockroach. You dare go to Guangzhou?”
I pulled out my phone, found the photo of my resignation paperwork, and held it up for him to see.
Chen Ruzhou took the phone and zoomed in repeatedly, finally laughing in disbelief.
Amidst the gasps of everyone around us, he yanked me out of the banquet hall.
I was pulled into a conference room, and Chen Ruzhou shut the door behind us.
He leaned against the door, not allowing me to evade his questions: “Su Wan, you’ve really done it!”
“You forgot our entrepreneurial agreement out of spite and ran off to Guangzhou?”
I lifted my head, mustering courage to confront him:
“I have my own career plans. Why do I have to arrange my life according to your pace?”
“Chen Ruzhou, ask yourself honestly—are you angry for the project or because I can’t continue being your technical backup?”
Chen Ruzhou’s face paled: “What do you mean by that?”
“Can you not say such harsh words?”
"We're both veterans in the workplace. That day... wasn't it mutual consent? Are you still hung up on that night?"
I felt a bit awkward, but I stubbornly met his gaze. "Chen Ruzhou, if you've set your sights on another partner, you can say it openly. I won't be the one to cling foolishly."
"But you clearly don't trust me. You follow me around like a shadow. That must feel good, right?"
He still didn't understand.
People who haven't exhausted all their hopes don't say goodbye.
Having his innermost thoughts exposed, Chen Ruzhou's face turned from pale to red, nearly losing his balance. "What are you saying? Just listen to yourself... you..."
He stammered, unable to continue.
"Su Wan, we've been fighting together since the first day of our startup. Now it's time to reap the rewards."
"Since you've chosen to betray this project, let's not contact each other about work anymore."
With that final statement, he fled the meeting room and disappeared.
