That afternoon, after several days of oppressive weather, a torrential downpour finally broke out.
The officials from the Three Provinces and Six Ministries had already scattered back home, leaving the streets nearly deserted, with only the Su Yan and the Qin Shuyang caught in this unfortunate weather.
The Su Yan rode a mare, clad in a raincoat that offered little protection, thoroughly soaked by the heavy rain.
She halted beside the Qin Shuyang and turned to look at him.
The Qin Shuyang stood in the rain, equally drenched. Water dripped from his handsome brows, sliding down his chiseled cheeks and along his long, athletic neck, gently pooling into the slightly loosened collar of his shirt, cascading down...
His thin clothing clung tightly to his robust form, outlining enticing curves that sparked the imagination...
"Have you seen enough?" The Qin Shuyang suddenly let out a cold laugh, his tone laced with sarcasm. "Does Lord Su mean to take my earlier words to heart and share a ride with me through this storm?"
" Qin Shuyang! You!" The Su Yan's face flushed instantly at his words, her anger nearly causing her to snap the reins in her hands.
She hadn’t expected that after offering her warmth, she would be met with such coldness and even be so brazenly teased. Was the Qin Shuyang truly that kind of person? Had she misinterpreted everything?
"Consider it as if I encountered a dog today!" With a sharp retort, the Su Yan cracked her whip forcefully and rode away without looking back. To hell with the Qin Shuyang! To hell with breaking the deadlock!
The more she thought about it, the angrier she became, her mind filled with thoughts of the Qin Shuyang's insufferable face. In frustration, she swung her whip again, snapping off several branches that protruded from the roadside, yet it still didn’t quell her anger. After a moment's thought, she abruptly turned her horse around and retraced her steps.
Halfway back, the Su Yan suddenly halted, startled by an overwhelming sense of unease that surged within her. Her ears perked up; amidst the sound of pouring rain, she distinctly recognized the clash of weapons.
As they drew closer, the dangerous and ominous aura intensified, causing even the horse beneath them to sense it, letting out an uneasy whinny that mingled with the sound of rain, creating a particularly mournful cry.
Finally, the Su Yan spotted the Qin Shuyang. He had long lost his umbrella and was wielding a three-foot-long sword, engaged in close combat with a Masked Man in Black who held a steel knife. The clash of blades, splashes of water, and the sorrowful rain made the scene dizzying for the Su Yan.
In the midst of battle, when Qin Shuyang noticed the Su Yan looking back, he momentarily froze. This brief hesitation put him at a disadvantage, and he narrowly avoided having his arm slashed by his opponent's blade. The man in black seized the opportunity and launched a series of fierce attacks against Qin Shuyang.
On the fifth strike, he suddenly pivoted and charged toward the Su Yan. A cold sweat broke out on her brow, but to her surprise, it was merely a feint. The masked man turned back swiftly, landing his blade squarely on Qin Shuyang's chest.
The Su Yan's heart leaped into her throat. In a moment of desperation, she leaped off her horse and yanked a jade hairpin from her head, plunging it fiercely into the horse's rear. The startled mare immediately bolted forward with a scream toward the two men.
Qin Shuyang remained unfazed, but the man in black took a step back in retreat. This withdrawal finally gave Qin Shuyang the upper hand; he executed a swift move with his sword, accurately piercing his opponent's chest while simultaneously evading the rampaging horse.
This all-or-nothing maneuver drained much of Qin Shuyang's strength. He gripped the sword hilt tightly, breathing heavily, yet his sharp dark eyes remained focused and unyielding as they locked onto his prey—the man in black.
Realizing he had missed his chance and was now severely injured himself, the assassin decided not to prolong the fight. Seizing upon Qin Shuyang's exhaustion, he quickly withdrew to escape.
With the killer gone, just as the Su Yan was about to breathe a sigh of relief, she saw Qin Shuyang sway slightly before collapsing to the ground along with his sword.
Her heart dropped again, nearly choking her.
She picked up her umbrella and rushed to his side, shielding him from the relentless rain while frantically helping him sit up.
To her surprise, as soon as Qin Shuyang struggled to sit up, he immediately snapped at her: "You thick-skinned girl! How dare you come back after I told you to leave!"
She saw that he still had the energy to curse, and instead of getting angry, she laughed. Without saying a word, she grabbed his arm and pinched it hard.
He let out a sharp gasp, his eyes revealing an expression of disbelief.
Feeling quite satisfied, she raised her eyebrows and scolded, "Are you kidding me? This isn't a hero saving a damsel; I saved you, okay? Can you at least show some gratitude?"
"You!" he was at a loss for words.
Even heroes have their moments of weakness, especially since he had indeed been saved by her this time.
As the saying goes, it's hardest to bear the kindness of a beauty. He decided to go all in and leaned into her embrace, comfortably resting against her.
She felt a gentle bump against her chest, and the vein on her temple couldn't help but throb.
