Wang Yushan had just returned home, sensing that something was amiss. She turned to run outside but was grabbed by Chung Yuyang, who held her arm and asked, "What are you doing? Planning to save him? Wait a moment; tomorrow I'll take you to collect his body."
When Wang Yushan cheerfully entered Wang Mansion, she found Chung Yuyang leisurely sipping tea on the sofa in the living room. The butler, who had been respectfully accompanying him, dismissed the other two servants when he saw her return.
"What are you doing in my house?" Wang Yushan approached him, glancing around as she asked, "Where's my sister? We just built a new western-style house for our wedding; my sister and brother-in-law went to see it."
"Listen, Wang Yushan, I will not marry you, so give up on that idea! Besides, there are plenty of women around you who want to marry you. Do you really need me?"
"I may have many women around me, but my mother only approves of you. Wang Yushan, let's be clear: you will be the Young Lady of the Chang Family and the mother of the heir. I will ensure you live comfortably and that your family thrives. However, you have no right to question my private life or concern yourself with how many women I have outside. Just focus on keeping my mother happy," Chung Yuyang said impatiently as he set down his teacup.
Wang Yushan glared at him. "I won't let you control me; I already have someone I like."
"Haha..." Chung Yuyang laughed mockingly and looked at her. "Do you really think Xu Ziyao will stand up for you?"
"You've been spying on me!"
"I don’t need to spy; everyone in Shanghai knows that I, Chung Yuyang, have been cuckolded by my fiancée. I thought removing you from the newspaper would keep you in line, but it seems you're still hanging out with Xu Ziyao every day. You got into his car early this morning and came back late after a whole day of fun—impressive!"
"I like him. Tomorrow I'm going to cancel our engagement."
"Tomorrow? He probably won't make it until then. If you go back now, he'll regret it," Chung Yuyang said with a sinister tone.
Wang Yushan was stunned. "Regret what? What have you done to him?"
"Hmph, that's not something I need to handle. Feng He Tang has been too prominent these years; there are already people in the government who don't like him. Tonight's view along the Huangpu River should be quite spectacular," Chung Yuyang said with a mocking smile.
Wang Yushan had studied at a foreign school in Shanghai, and her ambition after graduation was to become a journalist—to expose the ugliness and darkness of the world and awaken the conscience of her fellow countrymen.
She had witnessed much of society's dirty hypocrisy but never imagined it could be this sinister: two factions clashing, hundreds of people being cut down or killed at will. In just one night, Feng He Tang vanished from Shanghai, leaving only the uncleaned bloodstains along the Huangpu River as a reminder of the tragedy that had occurred there.
Seeing Xu Ziyao again was in the hospital. His head was wrapped in bandages, and he was still unconscious.
The Constable stationed outside said that Xu Ziyao had driven to the dock and witnessed Xu Yan's boat explode. Without a second thought, he jumped into the river but was struck on the head by debris from the blasted boat.
Xu Yan was dead, and Feng He Tang was gone as well, but the mastermind behind it all wanted to eliminate any loose ends. If it weren't for the foreign media getting involved, Xu Ziyao would never have been sent to the hospital.
Wang Yushan had sat by his bedside for three days and nights, and finally, Xu Ziyao awakened, staring blankly at the ceiling.
"Ziyao, Ziyao," Wang Yushan softly called his name. Xu Ziyao's gaze drifted, resting on her face for a long time. Tears welled up in his eyes as he opened his mouth.
She leaned down, putting her ear close to his lips. Xu Ziyao hoarsely said, "I'm sorry, I can't keep my promise to be with you."
"What are you talking about? Your injuries aren't serious! Once you're better, we can be together," Wang Yushan replied, holding his cold hand and fighting back her tears.
"They want me dead," Xu Ziyao rasped, his eyes lingering on Wang Yushan. "Yushan, live well."
"Ziyao!"
"Promise me, Yushan, no matter what happens, you must live well." Xu Ziyao slowly raised his hand to touch her face. He tried to smile, but the movement tugged at his wound, causing him pain.
Outside the door, the Constable's men had entered and stood behind Wang Yushan, coldly saying, "Miss Wang, you need to leave. If my superiors find out someone visited a suspect, I won't be able to explain myself!"
"A suspect? How did Ziyao become a suspect?" Wang Yushan retorted.
The Constable hesitated before saying, "After all, opium was found in the Xu family's warehouse."
Xu Ziyao on the bed scoffed coldly: "You blew up the entire warehouse; how could anything be left of the opium?"
"Wang Yushan, if you don't leave now, do you want to get me killed?" Chung Yuyang stormed into the hospital room, grabbing Wang Yushan and pulling her towards the exit.
"I won't go..." Wang Yushan clung to the edge of the bed, terrified that if she left, Xu Ziyao would truly be lost to her forever.
Xu Ziyao looked at her with deep despair, his fingers slowly moving to pry her grip away. Suddenly, his hand slipped, and Wang Yushan was yanked out of the room by Chung Yuyang.
The Constable closed the door behind them. Wang Yushan caught a glimpse of Xu Ziyao shedding tears, his eyes filled with sorrow and hopelessness.
"Ziyao!" she cried out, her heart breaking. All the good memories of him flooded her mind. Was she really going to miss out on this man she wanted to rely on for a lifetime?
Chung Yuyang pushed Wang Yushan into the car. She clutched his arm, pleading, "Chang Yuyang, please, save Ziyao."
"Wang Yushan, I can promise to pull some strings for you to see him one last time, but that's my limit."
"No, you must have a way! Ziyao is innocent; all the Feng He Tang people are dead. Why won't they let him go?"
"This society is cruel; you can only blame his bad luck."
"Chang Yuyang, I'm begging you! If you save Ziyao, I will marry you and live a quiet life bearing your children, no matter how many women you have outside. I'm begging you!"
Wang Yushan shook his arm desperately, but Chung Yuyang focused on driving forward, shaking off her grip.
