As I watched Ji Chuan, I thought it should be fine. As the crowd moved forward, Feng Yao spotted me among the throng.
Our eyes met across the sea of people, and she raised her lips in a smug smile. She gently tugged at Ji Chuan's sleeve, and he leaned closer to her. Suddenly, Feng Yao kissed Ji Chuan on the cheek. I saw Ji Chuan's face turn bright red as he looked at her in confusion.
Li Yao glanced at me again, her gaze filled with provocation. She could no longer hold back. Following her line of sight, Ji Chuan looked over and, panicking, rushed toward me through the crowd.
I thought to myself, once again, Ji Chuan. I stood still, my heart a mix of emotions, finally managing to compose myself. I smiled at him, waiting for his explanation.
“Qin Qin, let me explain. Yao Yao said her stomach hurt, so I came to the hospital with her...” He instinctively reached out to grab my hand, but I pulled away.
He paused for a moment. “She was just joking with me earlier; don’t take it to heart.”
I adjusted his tie and replied, “I understand. You two just grew up together and are used to playing around.”
Feng Yao approached, clutching her stomach. She looked at Ji Chuan as he held me close and then turned her gaze back to me.
“ sister Qin, don’t overthink it; I had a stomachache this morning, which is why A Chuan came with me to see the doctor.”
I continued to smile. “Ji Chuan has already explained.”
Feng Yao studied me, searching for any sign of unease as I calmly met her gaze. Suddenly, she laughed softly. “ sister Qin, your breakfast was really delicious.”
Feng Yao finally couldn’t hold back any longer and began her offensive.
"Really? You're welcome to visit me and Ji Chuan's home," Feng Yao said, her voice laced with a hint of excitement.
Upon hearing her words, Ji Chuan's expression grew more flustered. "Qin Qin, I..."
I placed my hand gently on Ji Chuan's, shaking my head to signal him not to explain. I could directly ask Ji Chuan not to meet with Feng Yao. But then what? Should I watch him make excuses to leave in the middle of the night or see him pop up in Feng Yao's social circle? I couldn't continue to deceive myself; they were more than just friends. Their childhood bond had transformed into something else entirely.
At that moment, what mattered to me was clear.
Feng Yao let out a pained cry, and Ji Chuan immediately released my hand, reaching out for hers. As if suddenly realizing something, his outstretched hand halted mid-air. I grasped his arm, pretending he hadn't just let go.
"Feng Yao, what's wrong?" I asked with concern, even though I had already anticipated her reaction.
"A Chuan, my stomach hurts even more," she said, avoiding my question and continuing to act coyly toward Ji Chuan.
"Qin Qin..." Ji Chuan hesitated as he looked at me.
"Ji Chuan, you should take care of her. I'm heading home," I said calmly.
Feng Yao watched my expression closely, trying to gauge my reaction. Suddenly, I smiled and added, "Go on, maybe it's because you ate something too spicy yesterday."
Ji Chuan looked at me uncertainly but ultimately chose to tend to Feng Yao.
I clenched the registration slip in my hand, my knuckles straining with effort. The paper twisted and crumpled until it tore apart, and I tossed it into the trash bin. Trash belongs with trash.
When Ji Chuan picked me up from IKEA in the afternoon, I felt something was off as soon as I sat in the passenger seat. Instinctively, I leaned back, trying to find a comfortable position, but discovered that the seat was adjusted too tightly.
Noticing my discomfort, Ji Chuan hurriedly helped me adjust the seat. "I had Yao Yao in here before; she must have set it up."
I stared silently at the sticker on the dashboard. "Ji Chuan, exclusive for girlfriends."
