As the door swung open, his fantasies shattered like a crystal ball dropped to the ground. Dai Xinyi stood there in her loungewear, her hair casually tied back, a hint of panic on her face. Behind her, a man was buttoning his shirt, an almost imperceptible awkwardness in his gaze.
Lin Hao's head buzzed as if a thousand bees were frantically buzzing inside. His hand, holding the gift box, froze in mid-air, resembling a comical clown caught in an embarrassing moment. "Dai Xinyi, who is this?" he struggled to control his trembling voice, forcing out a smile that looked more like a grimace.
Before Dai Xinyi could respond, the man stepped forward, extending his hand confidently. "Hello, I'm Ke Wenbo, Dai Xinyi's ex-boyfriend."
Ke Wenbo? Ex-boyfriend? Those four words hit Lin Hao like heavy blows to the chest, leaving him breathless. He mechanically reached out and shook Ke Wenbo's hand, feeling the dryness and strength of the other man's grip, as if it silently proclaimed dominance.
Lin Hao's gaze darted between the two of them—Dai Xinyi's flustered eyes and Ke Wenbo's composed demeanor—everything felt unbearably glaring. He felt like a fool being toyed with. An ex-boyfriend? Ha! What was he doing here at his ex-girlfriend's place? Catching up? Or rekindling old flames? Lin Hao's tone dripped with sarcasm, his eyes filled with hostility.
Ke Wenbo frowned slightly; he had no desire to clash with this inexplicable man, but Lin Hao's attitude made him uncomfortable. "I'm here to catch up with Dai Xinyi; it doesn't seem to concern you."
Raising an eyebrow, he cast a disdainful glance at Lin Hao, his tone laced with mockery. "What’s wrong? Is it illegal to reminisce? Who do you think you are to interfere?"
Lin Hao's face flushed crimson, resembling a boiled crab. He pointed at Ke Wenbo but couldn't articulate his thoughts, looking like a cat whose tail had been stepped on.
Seeing this, Dai Xinyi quickly stepped between them like a mother hen protecting her chicks. "Lin Hao, don’t misunderstand; Wen Bo is just here to help me grab something." As she spoke, she shot Ke Wenbo a fierce glare, signaling him to keep quiet.
"Grab something? What could possibly warrant your ex-boyfriend showing up at your bedroom in disarray so early in the morning?" Lin Hao scoffed, his gaze slicing between Ke Wenbo's calm demeanor and Dai Xinyi's flustered state. "Dai Xinyi, do you think I'm a fool?"
Dai Xinyi's face paled; she hadn't anticipated things would escalate like this. "Lin Hao, please let me explain; it really is just about grabbing something," she said with a tremor in her voice as she tried to grasp Lin Hao's hand but was violently shaken off.
"Explain? What’s there to explain! A man and a woman alone in a room—do you think I’m blind?" Lin Hao shouted angrily, feeling humiliated as if he were being mocked by both Dai Xinyi and Ke Wenbo.
Watching Dai Xinyi’s panicked expression stirred irritation within Ke Wenbo. He had come today out of kindness to check on Dai Xinyi and hadn’t intended to get entangled in her affairs. But seeing Lin Hao’s aggressive demeanor changed his mind.
He stepped closer to Dai Xinyi and wrapped an arm around her shoulders while defiantly looking at Lin Hao. "What’s wrong? Am I bothering you by visiting my ex-girlfriend? Are you jealous?"
Dai Xinyi stiffened for a moment; she wanted to push Ke Wenbo away but hesitated out of fear of provoking Lin Hao. She could only whisper, "Wen Bo, please stop; I’m begging you."
Seeing the pleading look in Dai Xinyi’s eyes pained Ke Wenbo; he understood that she cared about Lin Hao and was afraid of confronting him.
