Ke Wenbo was startled by Chen Jianguo's sudden outburst. He stammered, "I-I have no lingering feelings for her." Deep down, he believed Chen Jianguo was referring to his contact with Dai Xinyi before the wedding, so he vehemently denied it.
"Really? Do you think I'm a fool?" Chen Jianguo sneered, pulling out a photo from his phone and tossing it in front of Ke Wenbo. "Take a look at this. What do you see?"
In the photo, Ke Wenbo and Dai Xinyi stood at the entrance of an apartment, with Dai Xinyi holding Ke Wenbo's hand. Their poses were intimate, clearly indicating a close relationship. Ke Wenbo froze, his face turning pale as if he had been slapped hard.
"This... this is..." Ke Wenbo stuttered, unable to articulate a response.
Chen Jianguo shouted angrily, "You sent a photo of you and Dai Xinyi to Fang Jingzhu! And you still won't tell me the truth! What the hell do you want? Are you playing with Fang Jingzhu's feelings?"
It dawned on Ke Wenbo that Chen Jianguo wasn't talking about events before the wedding but rather about his recent visit to Dai Xinyi. Panic set in.
"Jian Guo, please let me explain," Ke Wenbo said urgently. "It's not what you think."
"What is it then? Go ahead and explain!" Chen Jianguo pressed, not giving Ke Wenbo a chance to defend himself. "You went out to see Dai Xinyi, hugged her—what do you expect Fang Jingzhu to think? How can she face you after this?"
Ke Wenbo slumped into a chair, covering his face with his hands and groaning in despair. He knew he had made a terrible mistake. He had only wanted to check on Dai Xinyi, hoping to encourage her to move on from the past and start anew.
However, when he saw Dai Xinyi's haggard appearance and listened to her recount her recent struggles, his heart softened. He couldn't help but embrace her, wanting to offer some comfort.
He never anticipated that this moment would be captured in a photograph or that it would end up in Fang Jingzhu's hands.
"Jian Guo, what should I do?" Ke Wenbo lifted his head, his eyes filled with confusion like a lost child.
Chen Jianguo sighed and patted his shoulder. "Wenbo, it's too late for anything now. The only thing you can do is sincerely apologize to Fang Jingzhu and ask for her forgiveness."
"Will she forgive me?" Ke Wenbo's voice was filled with despair.
"I don't know," Chen Jianguo shook his head. "That depends on your actions moving forward. If you truly realize your mistake, show your sincerity and let Fang Jingzhu see your change."
Ke Wenbo fell silent; he knew Chen Jianguo was right. He needed to change and win back Fang Jingzhu's heart.
He barely slept that night. Chen Jianguo's words pierced him like a thorn, keeping him tossing and turning in bed. He repeatedly looked at the photo on his phone; there he was smiling like a fool, but now that smile felt like a mockery of his own foolishness.
As dawn broke, he got up early. After hastily washing up and leaving the house with dark circles under his eyes, he headed straight for the supermarket. He carefully selected West Lake Longjing tea for Yue Ai, imported milk for Yue Qi, and various nutritional supplements, filling two large shopping bags to the brim.
Taking a deep breath, he drove towards Yue Qi's home. His heart raced anxiously as if it were a rabbit thumping wildly in his chest. He imagined countless scenarios: the fury of Yue Qi's parents, Yue Qi's disappointment, Fang Jingzhu's indifference—each one made him feel like he was sitting on pins and needles.
When he arrived at Yue Qi's doorstep, he hesitated for a moment before summoning the courage to ring the doorbell.
