"Dad, I want to see Fang Jingzhu," Li Wenbo said cautiously, his tone tinged with a hint of pleading.
"Fang doesn't want to see you," Fang replied coldly, showing no signs of yielding.
"Please, let me just meet her once. I need to explain things to her," Li Wenbo nearly begged, almost dropping to his knees.
Fang hesitated for a moment but ultimately softened. "Fine, you can go in."
Fang led Li Wenbo to the door of Fang Jingzhu's room, sighed heavily, patted his shoulder, and turned to leave. Li Wenbo stood alone at the door, his palms sweaty.
Taking a deep breath, he raised his hand and knocked on the door. "Fang Jingzhu, it's me, Wen Bo. Can you open the door? I just want to talk for a moment."
Silence filled the room; there was no response. Li Wenbo's heart sank. Could it be that Fang Jingzhu really didn’t want to see him? Undeterred, he knocked again, his tone more earnest. "Fang Jingzhu, I know I was wrong. Can you give me a chance to explain? Just a few minutes, please."
Still, there was nothing but silence. Li Wenbo felt his hope fading away bit by bit. Dejectedly, he let his hands drop and turned to leave. Just then, he heard the faint sound of the door lock clicking.
Li Wenbo quickly turned around and saw the door slowly crack open. His heart leaped with joy as he pushed the door open and stepped inside.
Fang Jingzhu sat on the bed with her back to him, her shoulders trembling slightly. He walked over and softly said, "Fang Jingzhu..."
She didn’t respond; she simply cried silently. Li Wenbo felt a pang in his heart as he pulled her into an embrace, gently comforting her. "Don’t cry. I know you’re hurting; I’m hurting too. What happened that day... it was my fault."
"What did you do wrong to me?" Fang Jingzhu suddenly lifted her head, her tear-filled eyes looking at him fiercely. "You liked Dai Xinyi! You two are perfect for each other; what am I? Just a joke!"
"Fang Jingzhu, listen to me; it’s not like that," Li Wenbo explained anxiously. "I admit that I used to like Dai Xinyi, but that’s all in the past now. The person I like now is you—only you."
"What did you do wrong to me?" Fang Jingzhu raised her head sharply again, tears streaming down her face but her gaze sharp as a blade. "You liked Dai Xinyi! You two are perfect for each other; what am I? Just a joke! A backup that you can summon and dismiss at will!"
Li Wenbo was taken aback by her sudden outburst; he opened his mouth to explain but didn’t know where to start.
"Is that so? You like me? You say you like me but then lie about going on a business trip when you were actually going to see her? What do you take me for?" Fang Jingzhu's voice was piercing, each word driving like nails into Li Wenbo's heart.
