The smell of disinfectant was so strong it felt as if it were penetrating every pore of my body. I sensed my physical form gradually regaining sensation, no longer enveloped in the previous haze of nothingness. The numbness began to fade, replaced by a tingling pain, like countless tiny electric currents coursing through my veins. The world seemed to be shrouded in a thin veil, hazy and distant. I struggled to grasp something, yet found that I couldn't even move a single finger.
This sensation was akin to slowly waking from a long nightmare. I tried hard to open my eyes, but my eyelids felt as heavy as if filled with lead. I heard a voice, intermittent and wavering, as if coming from far away. The voice gradually became clearer, carrying a tremor, a hint of choking emotion, and perhaps… hope?
“Lin Hao… Lin Hao, can you hear me?”
It was Xiao Ai!
I recognized that voice all too well. My heart surged with warmth, like a ray of sunshine breaking through the winter chill, illuminating my entire world. I wanted to respond to her, to tell her that I was okay, but my throat was as dry as a desert, unable to produce any sound. All I could do was muster all my strength to slightly move my fingers.
“He moved! He moved!” Xiao Ai's voice trembled with excitement, as if afraid of startling me. She gently called my name, “Lin Hao… Lin Hao…”
I made another effort to open my eyes. This time, I succeeded. Although I could barely crack them open, I saw her. Xiao Ai was right by my bedside, her eyes swollen and face showing clear signs of fatigue, yet she forced a smile and looked at me tenderly.
In that moment, I felt like a drowning person grasping onto a piece of driftwood, overwhelmed with gratitude for having survived the ordeal. I had finally awakened! From that endless cycle, I was finally free! An indescribable thrill and joy filled my chest; I wanted to laugh out loud and shout with glee, but I could do nothing but greedily gaze at Xiao Ai before me with my feeble vision.
Seeing me awake, Xiao Ai could no longer hold back her tears; they streamed down her face. She trembled as she gently caressed my cheek and choked out the words, “You’re finally awake… you’re finally awake…”
Her tears fell onto my face—warm and salty. I wanted to lift my hand to wipe her tears away, but my arm felt as heavy as lead. All I could do was exert all my strength to let out a faint sigh.
“Xiao Ai…” At last, I managed to produce sound; though it was weak like the buzz of a mosquito, I successfully called her name.
“I’m here! I’m right here!” Xiao Ai tightly grasped my hand, her excitement making her speechless. “How do you feel? Is there anywhere that hurts?”
I wanted to tell her everything I had experienced in the cycle, to share how I died again and again, only to be reborn each time. I wanted to express that in the endless darkness, it was her voice that gave me the courage to keep going.
"I... I had a long dream..." I said weakly, "a very long dream..."
"I know, I know..." Xiao Ai gently interrupted me, "It's all over now; you are safe."
I struggled to recall the details of the cycle, but those memories felt shrouded in a fog, unclear and distant. I could only piece together fragments: the thrilling escapes, the desperate struggles, the painful deaths...
Xiao Ai listened quietly, her eyes filled with compassion and admiration. She held my hand tightly, as if trying to transfer all her strength to me.
"You are truly brave..." Xiao Ai's voice trembled slightly, "You've been through so much and still haven't given up..."
I managed a weak smile, wanting to say something more, but found I had exhausted all my energy. Xiao Ai gently pulled me into her embrace. I felt her warmth, her heartbeat, her love. In that moment, it felt as if I had returned to my mother's arms—warm and safe.
In Xiao Ai's embrace, I gradually fell asleep. I knew I needed time to recover, time to adapt to this brand new world. But I believed that as long as Xiao Ai was by my side, I could overcome any difficulty and start my life anew.
When I woke up, I felt like a newborn; everything needed to be relearned. Walking, talking, eating... these once-familiar tasks now seemed so difficult. My body felt like a rusty machine; every movement was slow and clumsy.
But I didn't give up. I knew I had to recover quickly to return to Xiao Ai's side, to protect her and face our new life together. I practiced each movement diligently, over and over again without complaint. Like a wobbly toddler learning to walk, I fell down only to get back up again—again and again—never giving in.
I knew I could do it. Because I knew Xiao Ai was right there beside me; she would always be with me, supporting and encouraging me. And for her sake, for our future together, I would strive to live on.
