On the way to school, I didn't dare to ask Shen Zhiyan why he didn't tell me which university he wanted to attend.
Silently, I entered the classroom, feeling a bit dazed during the lesson. What if Shen Zhiyan really didn't want to go to the same university as me? Was this all there was for us?
After class, I went to get some water just as Shen Zhiyan walked by.
"Why were you staring at me during class? I didn't annoy you today, did I?" he asked, looking directly at me.
"It's nothing, I just twisted my neck a bit and needed to stretch," I replied, quickly making up an excuse.
Shen Zhiyan reached out and touched my forehead. "You're not running a fever. Why do I feel like something's off with you these past couple of days?" he murmured.
"Can't you think something good about me?" What if I had won a lottery and was just acting silly?
Sighing, I realized that I really, really liked him.
The whistle blew, signaling the start of the senior basketball tournament, which was in full swing.
"Go, Shen Zhiyan! Go!" The sidelines were packed with excited classmates cheering loudly.
As the game began, the opposing team made the first serve. Shen Zhiyan quickly sprinted forward like a cheetah toward the player with the ball. He executed a beautiful steal that drew cheers from the crowd.
I stood on the sidelines holding a bottle of water. Today, he wore his signature white jersey with the number 7, and his tall figure stood out among the crowd.
As the game intensified, the score remained tight. The opposing players fought back fiercely, and when Shen Zhiyan got tightly marked during one attack, my heart raced with anxiety.
"Shen Zhiyan, you can do it!" I shouted as he dodged left and right, looking for an opportunity to break through. In that crucial moment, he faked out his opponent and leaped high for a shot.
The basketball arced beautifully through the air and swished through the net! We won!
I screamed in excitement, my water bottle shaking slightly in my hand.
Shen Zhiyan looked up at me and slowly made his way over. Other girls rushed up to him, offering him their water bottles, but he turned them all down.
When he reached me, he finally accepted the water from my hand. He twisted off the cap and took big gulps.
Sweat glistened on his sun-kissed skin under the sunlight, and his deep-set eyes locked onto mine as if trying to melt me away.
“Shen Zhiyan, you were really impressive today!” I praised him.
“Do you like me just a little bit, considering how amazing I am?” Shen Zhiyan suddenly asked in a low voice.
What... what? Like him? No, I can't say that. What if he doesn't like me back? I wouldn't even have a friend left.
“You... you shouldn't say things like that; the classmates are all watching!” I replied, my face turning red as I avoided his gaze.
“Oh, I see,” Shen Zhiyan said, pretending to be profound.
“What do you mean you see?” I pressed him for an answer.
“If it were just the two of us, you would admit that you like me,” he teased deliberately.
“Hmph, dream on! I would never like you!” I pouted angrily.
Recently, something had been bothering me. Gifts kept appearing in my desk—sometimes a notebook, sometimes chocolate, or even a rose.
I was curious about who was sending them but also afraid to find out it wasn't the person I hoped for.
The gifts always showed up before afternoon classes, so I decided to arrive at school early during lunch to wait for the gift-giver to appear.
Arriving at school early, instead of going to my seat, I lay down on the last row of desks, covered myself with my uniform, and pretended to be asleep.
