I declined the help of the Pack maid and walked alone into the bathroom. As I stripped off my tattered clothes, my battered body was exposed to the air. Once fair and smooth skin was now marred with a multitude of scars—some from burns inflicted by a branding iron, others from claw marks, and bruises from beatings, all appearing grotesque and terrifying.
Each scar represented a painful memory. I trembled as I traced my fingers over them, unwilling to recall those unbearable experiences. I deliberately rummaged through the wardrobe for a long-sleeved shirt and pants to cover my wounds. This was a stark contrast to my usual style; I had always preferred outfits that showcased my figure, exuding confidence and vitality.
As I descended the stairs in this new attire, Caroline looked at me with some confusion. “Emily, have you changed your style?” she asked.
“Um,” I offered a casual excuse, “I think this kind of clothing is quite comfortable and warmer.”
Caroline smiled lightly. “It seems this experience has changed you quite a bit. I used to advise you not to dress too lightly even in summer, but you never listened.”
Alpha Alex gave a knowing smile, his previous irritation and unease replaced by his usual confidence and dominance.
I knew what he was thinking; he must believe that I dressed this way to attract him, thinking my earlier resistance was merely a tantrum. When I had worn revealing outfits in front of him before, he would frown disapprovingly and say, “Dressing like that, who are you trying to attract?”
I had retorted, “I think it looks great; it suits my style.”
Alpha Alex had shot me a glance and replied, “Emily, you should dress more appropriately; that would better reflect your Gamma status.”
At that time, eager to please him, I had donned styles he preferred and twirled before him. “Alpha Alex, do I look good like this?”
He had simply responded with indifference, “It’s fine,” before having me dismissed for interrupting his Pack affairs.
I had felt both disappointed and confused then; I didn’t understand why, despite dressing according to his preferences, I still didn’t earn his approval. I could only comfort myself that he simply wasn’t good at expressing himself.
Now, I was no longer naive and finally understood that he didn’t care what I wore because he had no interest in me as a person. If he truly cared about me, he wouldn’t be so indifferent about my abduction by the Bloodmoon Pack.
Sitting in my seat, the cold air from the air conditioning made me shiver involuntarily. Noticing this, Caroline quickly instructed the maid to raise the temperature while muttering in confusion, “Emily, weren’t you always afraid of the heat?”
Even Alpha Alex showed an unusual hint of concern on his face. “Emily, you don’t look quite right; what’s wrong?”
In the past, I had always preferred setting the air conditioning low while wearing light clothing to enjoy the summer coolness. But now, I was no longer the cheerful Emily of before. The carefree girl had died a month ago.
In the Bloodmoon Pack's dungeon, they had thrown me into cold filthy water out of anger for not receiving ransom from Silvermoon Pack. Prolonged exposure weakened my once healthy body. Now even a slight chill made me tremble uncontrollably; my joints throbbed painfully.
Seeing me silent, Alpha Alex brought over a blanket and wrapped it around me before pulling both me and the blanket into his embrace. “Is it warm now?”
His embrace was warm and strong; when I looked up, I could see his Adam's apple moving as he spoke. Instinctively, I wanted to break free from his hold. He had been indifferent to my suffering before; why pretend now?
The man’s strength was overwhelming; my struggles felt futile against him as he held me tightly.
Caroline chimed in teasingly, “Emily, I told you my son is tough on the outside but soft on the inside; he really does care about you.”
“Mom!” Alpha Alex called out with some displeasure, seemingly unhappy with his mother’s matchmaking efforts.
Just as I was about to ask Caroline to stop joking about me and Alpha Alex, a woman dressed simply emerged from the kitchen.
Seeing our intimate posture, her expression shifted slightly before she replaced it with a smile and said to Caroline, “I told you Emily would be fine! Look at her; she’s back safe and sound.”
She turned to me, a hint of envy in her voice. "Emily, you’re so lucky. During the time you were missing, Caroline was so worried that she couldn’t eat for days."
She sighed again, her expression sorrowful. "Unlike me, an orphan abandoned at the Pack's doorstep, I’ve never experienced this feeling of being cared for."
I smirked sarcastically. Olivia Hoffman, the Pack Doctor of Silvermoon Pack, was as skilled as ever at pretending. Her words highlighted that I was not Caroline's biological daughter, merely an outsider living under her roof. It also suggested that my disappearance was nothing more than a childish tantrum, completely oblivious to the seriousness of the situation and how it had worried my elders. Meanwhile, she played the role of the pitiful character, making me seem ungrateful and unable to appreciate Caroline's concern.
As she spoke, she deliberately raised her wrist, the limited edition Moonstone Bracelet glinting under the light, glaringly bright.
Because of Olivia, many misunderstandings had arisen between Alpha Alex and me. As a woman, how could I not see her feelings for him? She always found ways to keep me away from Alpha Alex, like using his busy schedule as an excuse to deny my visits or "accidentally" leaving the food I prepared for him outside her office.
I had once complained to Alpha Alex about wanting a different Pack Doctor.
He rubbed his temples impatiently. "Emily, what has Olivia done to you? She's very capable and loyal to the Pack. If it’s not a big deal..."
His words only made me angrier; it felt like he was siding with Olivia and dismissing my concerns as mere complaints.
What frustrated me even more was that Moonstone Bracelet—something I had begged Alpha Alex for a long time before he finally agreed to help me trade for it from a neighboring Pack—was now in Olivia's possession, identical to mine!
On the day I was abducted by Bloodmoon Pack, Olivia had flaunted her bracelet in front of me, saying, "This is a gift from Alpha Alex for rewarding my hard work lately. Emily, what do you think of this bracelet?"
I held back my disgust and shot back with a dismissive "It’s ugly," before turning away.
I had originally planned to confront Alpha Alex about it but ended up ambushed by Bloodmoon Pack on my way there. Rejected and imprisoned, I endured inhumane torture. Eventually, I lost all hope in Alpha Alex and my desire to question him.
Olivia's words seemed to gain Caroline's approval as she gently patted my hand. "Emily, if Alpha Alex ever makes you feel wronged again, just tell Auntie. I will make sure he learns his lesson. You can’t just leave without saying anything again; do you know how worried Auntie was about you?"
"I... I didn’t mean to leave," I said, my eyes welling up with tears as I choked out the words. "I was taken by Bloodmoon Pack; they..."
Alpha Alex looked astonished. "You didn’t leave the Pack out of anger for a trip?" He murmured in disbelief. "I didn’t receive any news from Bloodmoon Pack; if I had known they took you..."
Caroline immediately realized the truth and burst into tears. "Emily, did they abuse you? Is that why you..."
I could no longer hold back my grievances and pain as I revealed the scars hidden beneath my long sleeves and pants.
"This wound was burned with a branding iron."
"This scar was scratched by their claws."
"They threw me into cold water and beat me..."
At this point, I could say no more as tears streamed down my face.
Alpha Alex's eyes filled with rage and guilt. "I will find those bastards and make them pay!" Suddenly remembering something, he lunged at Olivia, grabbing her by the throat with bloodshot eyes like a beast gone mad. "Was it you? I received no news from Bloodmoon Pack; my communicator was with you during the meeting!"
Olivia's pupils dilated sharply; her gaze flickered with guilt as she stubbornly denied it. "Alpha Alex, you have to believe me; this has nothing to do with me."
Alpha Alex clearly did not believe her excuses; he tightened his grip on her throat until her face turned red and she struggled for breath.
Caroline cried out in desperation to stop him. "Alpha Alex, calm down! You can’t kill her!"
Only then did Alpha Alex reluctantly release his grip on Olivia, tossing her aside like trash. "You despicable little thing! Denying it now? I have many ways to make you talk!"
With a wave of his hand, several Pack Warriors immediately dragged Olivia away despite her cries and struggles being futile.
When Alpha Alex looked at me again, I was surprised to see tears in his eyes. This proud Alpha, who usually kept his emotions hidden, was crying.
He cautiously reached out his hand, as if afraid to touch me. "Emily..." he managed to force out a smile that was more painful than the tears. "I'm sorry. I neglected you, and that's why you had to suffer like this. Can you... can you give me another chance?"
His eagerness to make amends was palpable, his tone as humble as a plea. "I... I promise I won't speak coldly to you again. In fact, I've always liked you. I love the way you smell, the sound of your voice, but my inexplicable pride kept me from admitting it."
"You look good in anything, but I don't want other wolves to see your beauty. I... I'm jealous, which is why I said you dressed inappropriately."
"I'll do whatever you say from now on. Please give me another chance, okay?"
He stared at me nervously, his eyes filled with fear as if my response could determine his fate.
"I'm sorry, Alpha Alex," I shook my head, my tone calm. "It's too late."
Your confession comes too late; your explanations are too late. I had speculated about your feelings countless times and cried over your indifference, yet you never provided me with a clear answer.
I could sense the love you hid beneath the surface, but this late arrival of affection could not compensate for the pain I had endured. Moreover, after the captivity and torment from Bloodmoon Pack, my heart was already dead—at least my love for you had died.
I gently embraced Caroline. "I'm sorry, Caroline, but I can no longer be the Luna of Silvermoon Pack."
Caroline's eyes were filled with tears. "Really... is there no chance at all?"
I nodded firmly, my facial muscles tense. Those painful memories were deeply etched into my soul and could not be erased.
"Good girl, you've suffered," Caroline said tenderly as she patted my hand. "It’s our Silvermoon Pack that failed to protect you. But the doors of the Pack will always be open for you."
"Thank you," I nodded vigorously and stated my decision. "I will leave Silvermoon Pack tomorrow. Caroline, thank you for taking care of me all this time. Silvermoon Pack has given me so much; I know you've always treated me like your own daughter. But I don't want to live like before anymore. I want to leave here to find a new life and rediscover myself."
Caroline hesitated but ultimately respected my decision. "Emily, no matter where you go, remember that Silvermoon Pack will always be your home. If you encounter any difficulties, make sure to come back."
But Alpha Alex suddenly grabbed my hand with a dark expression on his face. "I don't agree with your leaving!"
Seeing the indifference in my eyes, he forcefully pulled me into his embrace, yet his tone was completely opposite to his actions—pleading humbly: "Please don’t leave me; I'll go crazy!"
I replied calmly, "In the dungeons of Bloodmoon Pack, I called your name countless times, begging for your rescue, but you never appeared. I suffered torture again and again—where were you?"
"What did you say when I returned? You thought I was being unreasonable; you didn’t believe me at all!"
I ruthlessly exposed his wounds. "If I stay by your side any longer, I'll lose my mind. Alpha Alex, don’t force me to hate you."
These words shattered Alpha Alex completely; he weakly released his grip on me, despair and pain filling his gaze.
After leaving Silvermoon Pack, my life was no longer luxurious but incredibly peaceful and serene.
The truth finally came to light: Olivia was the mastermind behind it all. She had deliberately provoked me with a fake Moonstone Bracelet to make me leave the Pack alone and then revealed my whereabouts to Bloodmoon Pack.
She told Bloodmoon Pack that I was the Gamma of Silvermoon Pack with a noble status and that if I were kidnapped, Alpha Alex would go to any lengths to rescue me.
This statement stirred the interest of Bloodmoon Pack's Alpha; thus they set a trap and abducted me.
After I was kidnapped, the Bloodmoon Pack immediately contacted Alpha Alex to demand a ransom. However, at that time, Alpha Alex was holding a Pack meeting, and the communicator was entrusted to Olivia. Olivia deliberately ignored the Bloodmoon Pack's communication and replied with a message: "We won't pay any ransom; do whatever you want."
She thought that the Bloodmoon Pack would be furious and would kill me. At the same time, she deceived Alpha Alex by saying that I had left the Pack in anger and gone on a trip. Since I had often left the Pack alone due to Alpha Alex's indifference, and given that the Pack was busy at that time, Alpha Alex believed Olivia's words.
Unexpectedly, I returned alive to the Silvermoon Pack, exposing Olivia's scheme. When Alpha Alex learned the truth, he was furious and imprisoned both Olivia and the Alpha of the Bloodmoon Pack in the Pack's jail, ordering them to be strictly monitored so they could pay for their actions.
Upon hearing this news, I felt no emotion; it was simply a case of them getting what they deserved.
"Emily, what do you want for dinner tonight?"
A handsome and gentle man peeked his head out from the kitchen, his tone soft. His name was Daniel Green, the Beta of the neighboring Sunshine Pack and my destined mate whom I met after leaving Silvermoon Pack.
"I want roasted venison and berry pie," I blurted out, only to remember that Daniel disapproved of me eating too much meat. "Or... let's change it to vegetable salad and grilled fish?"
Daniel smiled and said, "Don't force yourself; eat whatever you want. I'll go to Sunshine Pack's territory to hunt a fresh deer for you and gather some fresh berries to make pie."
I happily nodded in acceptance of his kindness. "And add a mushroom soup too."
Daniel made an "OK" gesture. "As you wish, my Luna. Please wait a moment; your dinner will be ready soon."
My life had undergone a dramatic change; it no longer revolved around Silvermoon Pack and Alpha Alex. So how did I meet Daniel, my personal "chef"?
Perhaps it was fate.
After leaving Silvermoon Pack, I searched for a new place to live when I encountered Brian Miller, the Gamma of Sunshine Pack. We had met once at a gathering between Packs; he was refined and left a good impression on me.
Upon learning that I was looking for housing, he informed me of an available rental property near Sunshine Pack's territory and enthusiastically took me to see it.
With a familiar face helping me, things progressed smoothly. I was very satisfied with the environment around the house and quickly finalized the lease.
What truly brought us closer was the day when I was kidnapped by Bloodmoon Pack and those embarrassing photos were exposed. Although Alpha Alex deleted the photos soon after, I still suffered a significant blow. That day, I locked myself in my room without eating or drinking for three days.
Worried about my safety, Brian had someone open my door to check on me before he felt relieved.
In a daze, I asked him, "Don't you think I look ugly in those photos?" In them, I appeared ragged and filthy like a stray dog.
Brian looked at me with concern. "I only saw a girl who remained strong in the face of suffering; your eyes are filled with strength."
He always supported me gently yet firmly. Just like before when members of Silvermoon Pack ostracized me and questioned my abilities, Brian stood up for me: "Emily is excellent; she has contributed greatly to the Pack; you shouldn't treat her this way."
At that time, my eyes were only on Alpha Alex; I didn’t notice Brian’s care and affection for me. Looking back now, I realize he had always been silently protecting me.
I smiled and asked him, "Brian, do you like me?"
Brian did not shy away from my question but looked into my eyes seriously. "Yes, Emily, I like you very much; I've liked you for a long time."
His honesty and straightforwardness made me feel safe and warm. After experiencing Alpha Alex's indifference and betrayal, what I longed for was such pure and sincere affection.
From that day on, our relationship underwent subtle changes. Brian tenderly cared for me, guided me, helping me step out of the shadows.
I jokingly asked him, "After everything terrible I've been through, don't you mind at all?"
He held me tightly, his voice filled with concern. "How could I mind? I only feel pain for what you went through."
Due to long-term malnutrition, my stomach had become very weak. Brian made it his mission to prepare various nutritious meals for me, using the fresh game and berries abundant in the Sunshine Pack territory as his ingredients.
Being with Brian brought me an unprecedented sense of happiness and joy. He warmed me like sunshine, healing all my wounds. I finally understood that a good partner can truly heal everything.
Alpha Alex sent me many gifts, all of which I turned away. When I love someone, I give my all, but if that love fades, I cut ties completely.
I never expected him to find my residence directly. He embraced me as if he had gone mad, holding me tightly as if trying to merge our bodies into one.
"Emily, are you with Brian?" His body trembled, his eyes red-rimmed. "You two aren’t really together, right? You promised you would always stay with the Silvermoon Pack." He spoke in a ramble, unsure if he was trying to convince me or deceive himself. "What’s so great about Brian? He doesn’t deserve you; you wouldn’t be with him..."
"Brian is my mate," I said softly, but it was enough for him to hear.
Alpha Alex looked at me in disbelief, the light in his eyes gradually dimming. "Brian is your mate... What about me? What am I to you?" He let out a low growl like a wounded beast. "You said you would be my Luna; what am I supposed to do?"
He knelt before me, pleading desperately. "Please, Emily, I know I was wrong. Give me another chance, will you? I promise to treat you well from now on; I won’t let you suffer again."
Seeing the once proud Alpha in such a humble state made my heart ache slightly. "Alpha Alex, why can’t you understand? I don’t love you anymore; I love Brian."
Tears welled up in Alpha Alex's eyes as he looked at me in fear. Finally, he gritted his teeth and said, "You like Brian; I... I won’t interfere. But can you please not leave the Silvermoon Pack?"
He wagged his tail like a puppy about to be abandoned by its owner. "I’ll be good; I promise not to disturb you and Brian. We can still be like before; you’ll always be the Gamma of Silvermoon Pack..."
His absurd words shocked me; I never imagined that the once proud Alpha would become so humble for love.
"Alpha Alex, stop degrading yourself. You are the Alpha of Silvermoon Pack; you shouldn’t lower yourself for a woman who doesn’t love you."
Alpha Alex shouted in despair, "Then tell me what I should do to make you change your mind!" Suddenly, as if realizing something, his tone turned sinister. "Is it that if Brian disappears, you'll forget him and come back to me?"
"If Brian disappears, I'll leave here to find him and wander the world with him," I replied firmly, giving him no illusions. "Alpha Alex, don’t you understand? It’s over between us; we can never go back."
"Even if you die in front of me now or if you kill Brian, my feelings won’t change. Stop being so stubborn."
"If you truly love me, let me go."
That day, the proud Alpha cried inconsolably as if he had lost his backbone.
Later, Caroline called to tell me that Alpha Alex was in poor health due to excessive sadness and drinking and hoped I would visit him.
My feelings for the Silvermoon Pack were hard to sever; ultimately, I decided to see him.
I took Brian's hand and presented a wedding invitation to Alpha Alex. "Alpha Alex, I'm getting married. We can't be partners anymore, but you and Caroline will always be my family. Let go of the past; we should all look forward."
It was said that on that day, Alpha Alex locked himself in his room and cried for a long time.
