I woke up in complete darkness.
Beneath me was a soft velvet mattress, and the air was filled with a faint scent of pine.
Is this Luke Dunphy's room?
As I tried to sit up, I realized my wrists were bound by specially crafted silver chains.
"Awake?" A familiar voice came from the window.
Luke Dunphy sat in the moonlight, his shirt slightly disheveled, with several blood marks on his neck.
Did I do that?
"You finally decided to wake up," he smirked. "Do you know how much noise you made last night?"
I froze. "Did I... hurt you?"
"What's wrong? Feeling sorry?" He stood up, stepping closer. "Then why didn't you feel sorry when you bit me?"
I instinctively shrank back. "Did I really turn into a wolf?"
"Yeah," he leaned down, his fingers brushing against my face. "A beautiful pure white one. Just like fifteen years ago."
Fifteen years ago...
Memories flooded back like a tide.
On that snowy night, I was being chased by a Wolf Hunter and stumbled into a manor.
Just as they were about to catch me, a boy stood in front of me.
He had a faint scent of pine.
"I'll cover for you," he said, "Run!"
But I was already gravely injured and instinctively bit down on his neck...
"Remember now?" Luke Dunphy's voice interrupted my recollection.
He unbuttoned his shirt collar, revealing the faint bite mark that had faded over time.
"That boy... was you?"
"What do you think?" He reached out and unlocked the silver chains on my wrists.
"I searched for you for fifteen years just to settle this score."
A sharp pain pierced my heart. "So you're done with your revenge now?"
"Revenge?" He suddenly gripped the back of my neck and leaned closer.
"Do you really think I'm here to take revenge on you?"
His breath washed over me, and I hurriedly turned my head away.
"What else could it be? The heir of the Wolf Hunter comes looking for me just to..."
"Foolish." He chuckled softly. "If I really wanted to kill you, would I have waited all these years?"
"But then you..."
Before I could finish my sentence, the door burst open.
Larry Fower rushed in, holding a syringe in his hand.
"Luke! The organization has issued an ultimatum: either you take her back now, or..."
"Or what?" Luke Dunphy stood up, his voice icy.
"Do you really think that a bunch of old men can threaten me?"
"Are you crazy?" Larry Fower exclaimed, "You are the Young Master of the Wolf Hunter!"
"Young Master?" Luke Dunphy scoffed, "Do you think I care about that position?"
Larry Fower was taken aback. "You..."
"Fifteen years ago," Luke Dunphy began slowly,
"When you were hunting down a little girl, did you ever consider my feelings?"
"That was an accident! We didn't know she would..."
"Didn't know?" Luke Dunphy's gaze suddenly turned icy.
"When you drove her parents to their deaths, you should have anticipated this day would come!"
What?!
I stared at him in shock. "You... know about my parents?"
He turned to look at me, his eyes suddenly softening.
"Of course I do. Your father was the king of the Wolf Clan, and your mother was human. They loved each other but were hunted by the Wolf Hunters. Before they died, my father promised to protect you."
"But..."
"But I broke my promise," pain flickered in his eyes.
"I arrived too late that night; your parents were already... So for the past fifteen years, I've been searching for you."
"Why?"
"Do you remember what you said after you bit me?"
I froze. That night, I had lost too much blood and couldn't recall anything I had said.
"You said," he spoke softly, "'When I grow up, I will definitely protect you.'"
My heart skipped a beat.
"Now," he reached out and wrapped his arm around my waist,
"My Little Wolf Cub, isn't it time for you to fulfill your promise?"
Larry Fower let out a cold laugh from the side.
"How touching. But do you really think the organization will let you go?"
"Let's find out," Luke Dunphy tightened his hold on me, his gaze proud.
"After all, the Wealthy Gala has long been in my pocket; if they want to play, I'm more than willing to join in."
"You!" Larry Fower raised a syringe threateningly, "Then don't blame me..."
Before he could finish his sentence, a flash of cold light cut through the air.
A silver dart embedded itself in his wrist, and the syringe fell to the ground with a thud.
"Larry Doctor," Luke Dunphy said lazily,
"Have you been too confident all these years?"
Larry Fower clutched his wrist, his face darkening. "You knew all along..."
"I certainly knew you were an undercover agent planted by the organization in the hospital," Luke Dunphy sneered. "Did you really think I trusted you all these years?"
All along, he had been acting?!
Before I could process what was happening, Luke Dunphy had already pressed something. In an instant, a group of bodyguards in black rushed in and subdued Larry Fower.
"Lock him up," Luke Dunphy commanded. "Don’t let him contact the organization."
"Yes, sir!"
Watching Larry Fower being taken away, I felt a bit dazed. "So, you’ve been protecting me all this time?"
"What else would I be doing?" He looked down at me. "If it weren't for you, would I have put up with this traitor for so many years?"
As he spoke, he pulled a pendant from his pocket. It was a silver charm shaped like a wolf's head, engraved with ancient Wolf Clan runes.
"This is..." I reached out to touch it, but he pulled back.
"Want it?" He smirked. "That depends on your performance."
"You..." I glared at him. "How childish are you?"
"Very childish," he suddenly lifted me off the ground. "So you have to take responsibility."
My face instantly flushed. "What are you doing?!"
"Taking you somewhere."
He carried me toward the study and stopped in front of a painting of a White Wolf.
"Do you know why I hang this painting?"
I shook my head.
"Because," he leaned down and whispered in my ear, "it was painted by my father. It depicts your mother."
"What?!"
"So," his eyes sparkled with amusement, "Little Wolf Cub, you need to take responsibility and protect me well."
