Liu Mei thought that Ling Yunhan would stockpile a house full of rice, but instead, he brought home a fancy gadget—a telephone—and spent all their money.
She was so angry she was trembling.
She wanted to eat meat; she wanted to eat meat! Didn't he say he would be frugal?!
Ling Yunhan winked at her and said, "As the saying goes, 'To do a good job, one must first sharpen their tools.' This telephone will help us attract business; it's definitely worth it."
In reality, not many people in the small town had telephones. She thought angrily, how exactly would they attract business? But seeing him so happy made her feel a bit better, and she forgot her anger.
However, they still needed to eat.
After silently gazing at her profile for a while, Ling Yunhan suddenly smiled and said, "That's easy to solve. There are plenty of game animals in the mountains outside the city. We can catch a few and have some meat; we can also sell the fur."
Liu Mei rolled her eyes. "It's not that easy. Do you have a gun?"
Ling Yunhan grinned as he pulled out a delicate gun along with five bullets. "I just saw a distressed soldier who was willing to trade his gun for money. I exchanged it for five silver dollars."
The person selling the gun must have been desperate; even this German-made pistol might not be worth fifty silver dollars.
Liu Mei felt happy and took the gun to examine it closely. "When will you install the telephone?"
Ling Yunhan looked at Liu Mei, who was busy cleaning the gun, with affectionate eyes. "Tomorrow."
Liu Mei completely forgot about Ling Yunhan's reckless spending and was filled with joy.
This forest was the ancestral property of the General's family, and usually, no one dared to enter.
Ling Yunhan somehow found a small path and led Liu Mei up the mountain.
The mountain was teeming with game animals, making it indeed a great place for hunting. Liu Mei aimed at the eye of a stag in the distance, her palms sweating profusely.
Ling Yunhan said he didn't know how to use a gun, so it was up to Liu Mei. He also mentioned that she should aim for the eyes to conserve bullets and avoid damaging the fur, ensuring a good price when sold.
As soon as the gunshot rang out, the stag fell to the ground.
Ling Yunhan retrieved the deer, his eyes shining as he exclaimed, "One-Hundred Steps to Hit a Target, what excellent marksmanship!"
Liu Mei lowered her head to eject the bullet from the chamber, pretending she hadn't heard him.
Just when they thought the deer was dead, it suddenly struggled, and its sharp antlers injured Ling Yunhan's hand, causing it to bleed profusely.
Liu Mei covered his hand, panicking as she shouted, "Oh no, what should we do? There's so much blood!"
Ling Yunhan gently reassured her, "It's okay."
With tears in her eyes and looking like she was about to cry, Liu Mei urged, "Hurry up and go see a doctor."
Ling Yunhan gently rubbed his uninjured fingertip against her cheek and asked, "What are you panicking about? Don't you want the deer anymore?"
In a flurry, Liu Mei searched for a handkerchief to cover her wound and cried out, "What's the point of that when my life is at stake?!"
Despite his attempts to comfort her, Liu Mei's tears wouldn't stop. Suddenly, Ling Yunhan pulled her into his embrace and kissed her.
Liu Mei immediately stopped crying, going limp in his arms as the handkerchief slipped from her grasp and fell to the ground.
After a long while, Ling Yunhan finally released her, resting his forehead against hers, his breath uneven. "Since you only like me, why not be with me?"
Though timid, she was strikingly beautiful in their small town.
Recently, there had been many matchmakers coming to propose marriage, all of which Liu Mei had turned down.
With a cold expression, Liu Mei asserted, "I am your master."
Ling Yunhan playfully brushed against her cheek with his lips. "When did I ever call you master? I've always called you curator. Besides, what have you taught me? I know much more than what you've taught me."
His words left him feeling quite embarrassed, and Liu Mei, flustered with anger, retorted, "Who said I liked you? I'm going on a blind date tomorrow!"
