When I woke up the next day, the lack of sleep and my wandering thoughts left both me and Chengshan feeling a bit dazed and disoriented.
I walked over to the window and pulled back the curtains, letting the sunlight pour into the room. The cold chill that had enveloped me last night melted away under the warm rays of the sun, like a thin layer of snow being thawed.
I closed my eyes and tilted my head slightly back, allowing my body to soak in the warmth. Suddenly, Chengshan, who was behind me, spoke softly.
“It's gone.”
“What did you say?” I turned to look at him.
Chengshan was bent over, searching inch by inch on the floor. He raised his voice to answer me, “That needle is gone.”
We both knelt on the floor, searching every corner of the room. After confirming that the needle had indeed vanished, it felt just as inexplicable as when it had mysteriously appeared on the bed in the middle of the night.
The eight tiny puncture marks on Chengshan's body had already healed to the point where they were unnoticeable. If it weren't for the few traces of blood left on the sheets that proved something strange had indeed happened, it would have seemed like we both shared the same nightmare.
This incident severely affected the atmosphere at home. For an entire day afterward, I tried to chat and laugh with Chengshan, desperately wanting life to return to normal. However, he remained listless, often staring off into space.
By evening, I spent two hours in the kitchen preparing a lavish dinner. Ever since Yuqi came to live with us, I had stopped going out to work and focused solely on taking care of him, which had significantly improved my cooking skills.
The three of us sat at the dining table, and Chengshan seemed to perk up a bit as he praised my culinary skills while eating. Yuqi sat beside me, using a small spoon to eat in a distracted manner.
After spending more than half a month together, I found this child to be well-behaved and quiet, as well as intelligent and independent. He didn’t need adults to feed him but seemed to dislike most foods and ate very little, which worried me greatly.
I picked up a piece of fish and placed it in Yuqi's small bowl. He immediately raised his hand to block it and shook his head, saying, “Mommy, not like this.”
“ Yuqi, do you not want to eat this?” I tried to understand what he meant.
He stubbornly shook his head again. “Not like this; it’s alive.”
“Alive?” I set down my chopsticks and focused on communicating with him. “Are you saying raw? Have you eaten raw fish before?”
He grew impatient, tossing aside his spoon and looking up at me seriously. “Mommy, I eat it alive.” Just as I was about to continue guessing what he meant, he turned his head towards Chengshan and called out for him for the first time, “Daddy.”
Chengshan didn’t respond; instead, he put down his bowl and retreated into the room.
I finished eating with Yuqi and let him play with his toys in the living room before cautiously walking into the bedroom.
Chengshan was sitting on the bed with his back to me, lost in thought. I approached him and gently patted his shoulder; he jolted as if electrified.
When he realized it was me, he relaxed slightly and covered his chest while taking deep breaths. I hurriedly brought him a cup of warm water.
He slowly took a few sips of water and said, "Hurry up and get this child out of here!"
"No way." I sat down beside Chengshan. " Chengshan, I disagree. We agreed on this from the beginning."
He slammed the cup down on the nightstand, anger radiating from him. "Zhao Xinran, I think you're going crazy over this child! Isn't what happened last night enough of a nightmare? You still want to keep this thing in our home?!"
I was equally furious. "What do you mean 'this thing'? This is a perfectly good little boy. I've raised him for so long; he calls me 'Mom.' How could I not understand him?"
"Did you hear what he just said? He said he eats living things! Is that human? In all these days, have you seen him eat a proper meal?"
"Can you take a child's words seriously? He didn't mean it that way!"
Chengshan was already exasperated. "Then what did he mean? How do you explain that needle from last night?"
I struggled to calm myself. No matter what, I couldn't lose Yuqi, and I didn't want to fight with my husband.
"That needle was mine; I left it on the bed after sewing some clothes."
Of course, this explanation wouldn't convince Chengshan; his face turned beet red, but in the end, he didn't continue arguing with me.
