That day, as I stepped out of the community, I spotted a familiar black minivan parked by the roadside. The window slowly rolled down, revealing Wen Xuan's haggard face. His stubble was unkempt, dark circles under his eyes made him look like he had aged ten years.
"Miss Lin, please, just let me see you, just once!" Wen Xuan's voice was hoarse, filled with desperate pleading.
I looked at him coldly, saying nothing and not stopping my pace.
"I know where Gao Yu is. Please take me to see her!" As I ignored him, Wen Xuan became even more agitated, almost getting out of the car to grab me.
I halted and turned around, my gaze icy as I stared at him. "Wen Xuan, what right do you have to mention Gao Yu's name?"
"I... I just want to see her, to apologize..." His voice dwindled, laden with guilt and unease.
"Apologize?"
I scoffed, pulling a document from my bag and throwing it harshly in his face. The papers scattered on the ground, stark black letters on white paper clearly showing Gao Yu's Death Certificate.
"Open your eyes and see clearly! Gao Yu is dead! Dead because of you!" I scolded sharply.
Wen Xuan picked up the Death Certificate, trembling hands opening it. When he read the words "Cause of Death: Late Stage Cancer Complications," his face turned as pale as the paper itself. It was as if all strength had been drained from his body; he collapsed onto the ground, the Death Certificate slipping from his grasp.
"It can't be... it can't be..." he muttered to himself, his eyes vacant and filled with disbelief.
"Why can't it be? Do you think Gao Yu is made of iron? Do you think she could sacrifice her life for your career?"
I crouched down close to Wen Xuan's face and said each word deliberately, "Gao Yu gave everything for you—her health, her life! And what about you? How did you treat her? You're nothing but a complete scoundrel!"
I raised my hand and slapped Wen Xuan hard across the face. The sharp sound of the slap echoed painfully in the quiet street.
His face turned away from the impact, blood seeping from the corner of his mouth; yet he sat there dazed, seemingly oblivious to the pain in his expressionless eyes.
"This slap is for Gao Yu! For you, heartless wretch!" I shouted, tears streaming down my face uncontrollably.
At that moment, a cry echoed from a distance.
"Wen Xuan! Wen Xuan! I want to see Wen Xuan!"
I turned to see Yun Xiaoxiao rushing over, her hair disheveled and her face streaked with tears, her makeup a complete mess, completely devoid of her usual pure and charming appearance.
Like a madwoman, she dashed in front of Wen Xuan, grabbing his collar and crying out, "Wen Xuan, say something! Those news reports are false, right? You didn't betray Gao Yu, did you?"
Wen Xuan sat there as if he hadn't heard her, staring blankly at the Death Certificate in his hands.
Yun Xiaoxiao became even more distraught. She shook Wen Xuan's body forcefully, screaming, "Wen Xuan! Speak to me! Tell me this isn't true!"
"Yun Xiaoxiao, stop shouting!" I glared at her coldly, my tone icy. "Gao Yu called you many times before she died. Did you know that? Including the last call."
Yun Xiaoxiao's cries abruptly ceased. She stared at me in shock, confusion and anxiety filling her eyes.
"Gao Yu... called me?" she murmured, seemingly unable to believe her ears.
"Yes, she called you many times to tell you something important, but you didn't answer. You were afraid it would affect your career; you were afraid of trouble, so you chose to ignore it, didn't you?" I pressed on, my voice dripping with sarcasm.
Yun Xiaoxiao's face turned pale as she stepped back a few paces, terror and panic evident in her expression.
"No... that's not true... I... I didn't know..." she stammered defensively, her voice trembling violently.
"Didn't know? Do you really not know? Or did you choose to pretend not to know?" I scoffed and continued, "Gao Yu saw through the true nature of you two scoundrels long ago. She knew how selfish and hypocritical you both were, so she had already planned to make you pay the price!"
Yun Xiaoxiao screamed as if she had heard something horrifying, covering her ears and retreating repeatedly.
Wen Xuan finally lifted his head and looked at Yun Xiaoxiao with eyes filled with disgust and rage. He suddenly grabbed her by the neck and squeezed tightly.
" bitch! It's all your fault! It's you who ruined me!" Wen Xuan shouted hoarsely, his voice filled with madness.
Yun Xiaoxiao struggled for breath, her face turning red as she fought desperately but to no avail.
At that moment, a familiar voice rang out.
"Wen Xuan, let her go!"
I turned towards the sound to see Lu Jingxing standing not far away, his expression dark and his gaze icy.
Seeing Lu Jingxing appear stirred a mix of emotions within me. Memories surged like a tide—our past together, the promises we made, everything I had sacrificed for him...
The cold voice of the system suddenly echoed in the air.
【Detecting that the host's vital signs are about to end, the mission world is about to close. Do you wish to say goodbye to the target Lu Jingxing?】
Goodbye?
Ha, what is there to say goodbye to?
I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and silently whispered in my heart: Farewell, Lu Jingxing.
Farewell, this absurd world.
My consciousness gradually faded, and my body felt light as a feather.
I knew it was time for me to leave.
Let everything end here.
I took one last look at Lu Jingxing. His gaze was fixed on me, filled with a complex mix of emotions.
Then, I chose to leave directly.
To die right in front of him; even if it wouldn’t make him feel guilty, it would surely scare him enough to have nightmares for days.
When I opened my eyes again, I had returned to the real world.
Sunlight streamed through the curtains and warmed my face; everything felt so real yet so unfamiliar.
Waiting for Lu Jingxing would only be a cold corpse.
So be it; let this false world collapse completely.
