Seeing the dangerous Scorpions approaching, Fei Bao shouted a warning to his companions, "Be careful! There are Scorpions!" He nervously moved closer to Xiao Zhuzi and Xi Xi.
However, the group of Scorpions did not immediately attack; instead, they slowly surrounded them, their eyes glinting with malice. They halted at a certain distance, seemingly waiting for some signal. At that moment, a slightly larger Scorpion stepped out from the swarm, exuding an air of arrogance and a hint of cunning in its eyes. The leading Scorpion spoke in a sharp voice, "Outsiders, Mistwood Forest is the territory of the Scorpion King. How dare you trespass without cause!"
Xiao Zhuzi mustered her courage and replied, "We were just passing through; we didn't know anything about the Scorpion King..."
The leading Scorpion scoffed at Xiao Zhuzi's explanation, snorted dismissively, and directly commanded an attack by waving its pincers. The Scorpions quickly dispersed and launched their assault from different directions.
Seeing this situation, Xi Xi made a quick decision. She grabbed Xiao Zhuzi and hurriedly retreated into the shallow stream. As expected, the Scorpions were wary of the water and dared not step into the stream. They could only angrily pace along the bank, continuously emitting threatening hisses.
Suddenly, an idea struck Xiao Zhuzi. She took off her shoes and handed one to Xi Xi, then used the other shoe as a makeshift cup to scoop up water from the stream and splashed it towards the Scorpions on the shore. The Scorpions were completely unprepared for such an action and were caught off guard by the water. They screamed in pain as if scalded by the stream.
Xi Xi and Fei Bao immediately understood Xiao Zhuzi's intent and quickly followed suit. Xi Xi began splashing water with the shoe Xiao Zhuzi had given her. Fei Bao scooped up a large handful of water with a big leaf and flew above the Scorpions, dousing them thoroughly. In no time, the cries of the Scorpions echoed around them. The Scorpion leader watched helplessly as its subordinates could neither approach the three outsiders nor escape the water attack, suffering heavy losses. It quickly ordered a retreat. The swarm of Scorpions receded like a tide, disappearing into the mist.
After this battle, the Ground Sky Squad dared not linger any longer; they hurriedly packed their belongings and set off deeper into the forest along the stream. They proceeded cautiously, fearing another encounter with the Scorpion swarm. Thus, the three companions walked in the chilly stream for most of the day. Just as they were about to stop and rest for a while, they suddenly came upon a low-lying Wetland ahead, where the stream flowed gently into it due to the declining terrain.
Fei Bao quickly flew around this large Wetland and discovered that once the stream entered it, it completely vanished—likely merging into Underground Water. This unexpected turn of events plunged Ground Sky Squad into despair—without the protection of the stream, they could not safely exit Mistwood Forest!
The three friends' spirits sank instantly as they sat dejectedly by the Wetland's edge in silence. After a while, Xi Xi, with her excellent hearing, suddenly broke the silence. "Wait! Can you hear that? There's a sound of flowing water where the stream enters the Wetland, and it seems very deep. This suggests there should be a large space underground; there might be an Underground River beneath this Wetland!" Upon hearing this from Xi Xi, both Xiao Zhuzi and Fei Bao immediately stood up and hurried to check by the Wetland. To their astonishment, they discovered a massive Ground Fissure not far from where the stream flowed underground!
Just as Fei Bao was about to fly over for a closer look, something unexpected happened—the mysterious Purple Poison Fog appeared again! This time, Xiao Zhuzi and her friends clearly saw that this strange purple mist was continuously billowing out from this Ground Fissure, spreading throughout the forest.
"So this is where the poisonous fog truly originates!" Xiao Zhuzi stared wide-eyed at the Ground Fissure as a flash of inspiration struck her mind. She quickly turned to Xi Xi and asked eagerly, "Xi Xi, think back—didn't we encounter that Purple Poison Fog around this time yesterday?"
Xi Xi strained to recall what had happened earlier and suddenly widened her eyes in surprise as she exclaimed, "That's right! Could it be that this purple poison fog is released at a fixed time every day?" As she spoke, she carefully observed her surroundings near the Ground Fissure. At that moment, her antennae twitched slightly as she softly said, "Xiao Zhuzi, Fei Bao! Come look! There seem to be some strange scratches on the rocks next to the Ground Fissure. These scratches don’t look natural; they seem more like someone deliberately carved out a passage."
Fei Bao flew back up into the air to examine the Ground Fissure closely before returning to Xiao Zhuzi and Xi Xi with a serious expression. "Indeed," he said gravely, "as Xi Xi mentioned earlier, this Ground Fissure is definitely not simple. I suspect it may hide secrets about all of Mistwood Forest."
"Now we face a dilemma: since the stream has flowed underground, we can no longer follow it out of this forest," Xiao Zhuzi said thoughtfully while biting her nails in contemplation. "It seems our only option is to go down through this Ground Fissure and see if there's an Underground River or something else that can lead us to our next path."
