Seeing Yang Meiling completely still, my father seemed to awaken from a dream and released his grip. Yang Meiling's eyes were wide open, her body limp on the ground, with several purplish-red marks around her neck. My father staggered back a few steps, leaning against the sofa, his gaze blankly fixed on his own hands. Suddenly, he rushed to the bathroom and began to retch.
I watched all of this with cold indifference. From the moment this man abandoned me and Meng Meng, he had already ceased to be worthy of the title of father. Whether he lived or died was no longer my concern.
I gently passed through the wall and entered Meng Meng's room. Although I had locked her door in advance to ensure her safety, the noise from outside still frightened her. She curled up in the wardrobe, tightly hugging her knees, her small face streaked with tears. I reached out my ethereal hand, wanting to stroke her hair and hold her close, just like before when I would gently pat her back.
However, Meng Meng was my sister, a strong child. As the commotion outside gradually quieted down, she took out her phone and trembled as she dialed 110. "Police lady, my dad is fighting with my stepmother, and it seems someone is hurt. Please come quickly..."
A few minutes later, the police arrived. My father sat slumped in the corner of the room, his eyes vacant like a puppet devoid of response as they placed handcuffs on him. "Is there anyone else in the house? Where is the girl who called for help?" The officers asked. My father merely shook his head numbly, his gaze fixed on Yang Meiling's lifeless body.
Two police officers began searching the house and eventually opened the wardrobe in the guest room... Meng Meng was curled up inside like a frightened little rabbit, trembling all over. Upon seeing strangers, she shrank even tighter into herself.
"The little girl is in the wardrobe! Xiao Liu, come quickly!"
A female police officer rushed over at the sound, quickly taking off her jacket to wrap Meng Meng and carrying her out.
"Let's go." The officer pulled the father downstairs.
As they exited the hallway, the man suddenly stopped, turning back for one last look at the home. The red and blue lights from the police cars reflected on his face, obscuring his expression.
Moments ago, the neighbors who had been sound asleep began to peek out, whispering among themselves:
"It’s Old Li's Family. What a tragic life they’ve led..."
Two days later, cherry blossoms bloomed outside the police station.
My aunt hurriedly arrived from out of town, her eyes swollen and red, resembling my late mother by about seventy percent.
At the sight of her, Li Meng finally broke down, throwing herself into her aunt's arms and crying uncontrollably.
"Sweet Meng Meng, it’s okay, it’s okay... Auntie will take you home." My aunt held Meng Meng tightly, choking back tears as she gently patted her back.
I stood beside them, reaching out my hand in an attempt to embrace them both. I knew they couldn’t feel me, but I still wanted to do it.
However, at that moment, Li Meng suddenly turned her head and looked in my direction. Her eyes sparkled as if sensing something, and she softly said, "Sister..."
A wave of pain surged through me; I wanted to cry, but now I had no tears left.
My aunt completed all the necessary paperwork and took Li Meng out of the police station.
Li Meng nestled against her aunt, who was gentle and reminded me of our mother. I knew my sister would be okay from now on.
"Goodbye, Meng Meng."
I whispered my farewell as I began to fade away.
