Since then, every time I went hunting, everything went smoothly. Not only did I return safely, but I also caught more and more game. The villagers joked that I had struck lucky, but deep down, I knew it was the Red Fox helping me from the shadows.
However, I couldn't understand why the Red Fox wanted to help me. I saved it, but why did it stay in this forest?
One day, as usual, I ventured into the mountains to hunt and discovered an injured wolf deep in the woods. The wolf was severely hurt; it looked like it had been bitten by another beast. I hesitated, unsure whether to intervene when the Red Fox suddenly darted out from the trees and crouched beside me, making soft whimpering sounds.
"What do you mean by that?" I stared at the Red Fox, my mind racing with questions. "Do you want me to save this wolf or do you want me to finish it off?"
The Red Fox seemed to understand my confusion; it nodded at me and pointed toward the wolf. I was taken aback. Did the Red Fox want me to spare the wolf?
After a long moment of hesitation, I ultimately decided to take action. After all, I was a hunter, and hunting was my duty. I nocked an arrow and aimed carefully. Just as I was about to release it, the Red Fox suddenly jumped up and blocked the wolf.
"Are you crazy?" I shouted, my arrow narrowly missing the Red Fox and embedding itself in a nearby tree trunk. The Red Fox turned back to me with a reproachful look in its eyes.
"What are you doing?" I stomped my foot in frustration. "I'm a hunter; it's my job! Why are you stopping me?"
The Red Fox didn’t respond but shook its head at me again and pointed at the wolf. Confused beyond measure, I thought, "Do you want me to save it or just let it go?"
At that moment, the wolf suddenly stood up and growled lowly at the Red Fox. Instead of backing down, the Red Fox barked a few times at the wolf as if warning it.
The wolf seemed to be frightened by the presence of the Red Fox, turning and running into the woods. I stood there in a daze, staring at the Red Fox, filled with shock. "Is this Red Fox really trying to get me to spare that wolf?"
The Red Fox turned back and nodded at me, letting out a couple of soft whines, as if to say, "You did the right thing."
I sighed and said helplessly, "You, fox, are quite the oddball. I saved you, and now you’re meddling in my hunting affairs. What exactly do you want?"
The Red Fox didn’t respond; it just smiled at me. "What does this Red Fox really mean?"
I plopped down under a tree, looking at the hunting bow in my hands, filled with confusion. "I saw it run this way!"
Just then, I suddenly heard a commotion of footsteps behind me. Turning around, I saw Yuanwai Li from the village approaching with several subordinates.
Yuanwai Li was notorious in Ten-Mile Slope for being a bully, often picking on the villagers. I wondered what he was doing here today.
"Oh, isn’t this Zhang Dashan? What are you doing here in a daze?" Yuanwai Li said mockingly.
I quickly stood up and forced a smile, saying, " Yuanwai Li, I’m out here hunting. Is there something you need?"
Yuanwai Li sneered, "Hunting? I think you’ve run into a vixen instead. I heard there’s a cunning Red Fox in these mountains that specializes in seducing men. It just came your way; you wouldn’t have been enchanted by it and hidden away, would you?"
