I am a Rookie Detective, and just as I stepped into the world of law enforcement, I encountered two bizarre cases of student deaths in high school. Initially, I thought it was merely a tragic incident on campus, but it soon unraveled into a cross-school underground organization. Just when the investigation hit a deadlock, an unintentional discovery of a chocolate wrapper shattered the fog surrounding the case. It turned out that this so-called "key high school" concealed secrets far more terrifying than death itself. 0

Early in the morning, I was cradling several warm breakfast items when I pushed open the door to the Criminal Investigation Division office. The desk phone was ringing incessantly. With several colleagues absent, I rushed over in a hurry, balancing a fried dough stick in one hand while grabbing the receiver with the other. 0

"Hello, Criminal Investigation Division." 0

A young man's voice came through on the other end: "Hello, I'm an officer from Wenyuan Road Police Station. There has been a student death incident at Port City High School. We received a report and arrived at the scene immediately, discovering that the deceased likely died under unnatural circumstances, possibly involving a criminal case. We need assistance from your team." 0

"Okay, I'll report it right away." I hung up the phone and was about to call my mentor when a deep voice suddenly came from behind me. 0

"Lin Mu Yang!" 0

I jumped in surprise, dropping my fried dough stick to the floor. Turning around, I saw my mentor, Zhou Weiguo, the deputy captain of the Criminal Investigation Division. Noticing his furrowed brow and serious expression, I immediately realized that news of the incident at Port City High School had reached him. 0

"Come with me; there's been an incident at Port City High School," he said as he quickly grabbed his coat and headed outside. I placed my breakfast on the desk and hurried after him. 0

As a rookie detective with less than six months on the job, this was my first time handling such a significant case. I drove while my mentor sat in the passenger seat; in the back were colleagues from Technical Investigation and forensics—everyone but me were seasoned detectives. Sensing my tension, my mentor glanced at me and said, "When we arrive at the scene, take good notes, stay calm, and pay attention to details!" 0

Twenty minutes later, we arrived at Port City High School. Two officers from Wenyuan Road Police Station were already waiting at the entrance; one of them quickly approached us. 0

"Hello, Captain Zhou. I'm Officer Zhang from Wenyuan Road Police Station. The deceased is Wang Ruiming, a 17-year-old sophomore from Class 3. Around 6:40 this morning, his roommate Li Zichen noticed he hadn't woken up at his usual time. When he went to check on him, he found Wang Ruiming already dead. He immediately reported it to the dorm supervisor. The supervisor called 110 at 6:45, and we arrived at 7:00. After preliminary examination, we found that the deceased had an unnatural bluish-purple discoloration on his lips and strange rashes on his extremities, leading us to suspect possible unnatural death; hence we contacted you." 0

As I listened, I quickly jotted down key information in my notebook. My mentor nodded approvingly at Officer Zhang and said, "Thank you for your hard work; let’s go see the scene!" 0

As we walked toward the dormitory building, it grew increasingly quiet around us; unrelated students had been directed to classrooms. In the sixth-floor hallway of the boys' dormitory, I immediately noticed three boys standing against the wall—these must be the deceased's roommates. All three looked pale and clearly shaken. 0

After a brief introduction from Officer Zhang, their homeroom teacher, Teacher Sun, choked back tears as she said, "Officers, you must find out what caused Wang Ruiming's death. He was my most outstanding student; just last night during study hall, I saw him explaining problems to his classmates—who would have thought...?" 0

My mentor nodded solemnly as he put on shoe covers and was the first to push open the door to the dorm room where the incident occurred. 0
