Chapter 4: A Deliberate Encounter
A few days later, on a sunny afternoon, Su Wanrou carefully dressed herself and made her way to the Imperial Garden.
The light pink dress accentuated her snow-like skin, and the floral adornment between her brows added just the right touch, making her resemble a blooming hibiscus—graceful and ethereal.
She intentionally chose the path that Gu Yun Ci often walked.
"Today, I must make him notice me," Su Wanrou silently vowed, her slender fingers tightly gripping her embroidered handkerchief, her palms slightly sweaty.
Feigning nonchalance, Su Wanrou strolled through the garden while keeping a watchful eye on her surroundings.
The garden was in full bloom, vibrant with colors and buzzing with bees and butterflies, creating a lively scene. Yet, Su Wanrou had no heart to appreciate it; her heart raced anxiously, as if it might leap from her chest at any moment.
Suddenly, she spotted Gu Yun Ci approaching from a distance.
Dressed in a moon-white long robe, he appeared like a jade tree in the wind—graceful and refined.
Su Wanrou's heartbeat quickened.
"This is it!" she shouted inwardly, taking a deep breath to compose herself and appear more natural.
She walked over to the artificial hill and pretended to accidentally twist her ankle, letting out a painful groan.
"Ah!" The sound was perfectly measured—not too exaggerated but enough to catch Gu Yun Ci's attention.
Hearing the noise, Gu Yun Ci turned towards it and saw Su Wanrou lying on the ground.
His brows furrowed slightly, concern flashing in his eyes.
He hurried over. "Miss Su, are you alright?"
A flicker of barely perceptible triumph crossed Su Wanrou's eyes, but she quickly replaced it with a pitiful expression. "Young Master Yun Ci, I think I've twisted my ankle. It hurts so much..."
She gently bit her lower lip, and there was a hint of tears shimmering in her eyes, making her look even more pitiful.
Gu Yun Ci watched Su Wanrou's painful expression, and a wave of compassion rose in his heart.
"I'll help you up," he said softly, with a touch of concern.
Gu Yun Ci reached out to assist Su Wanrou to her feet.
Su Wanrou leaned lightly against Gu Yun Ci, feeling the warmth radiating from him, and a sense of joy surged within her.
She whispered, "Thank you, Young Master Yun Ci." Her voice was soft, like a gentle breeze passing by.
Seeing Su Wanrou's frail appearance stirred a protective instinct within Gu Yun Ci.
"Let me take you home."
A glimmer of joy flashed in Su Wanrou's eyes. "Then I’ll trouble you, Young Master Yun Ci."
Gu Yun Ci lifted Su Wanrou onto his back and headed toward her residence.
As Su Wanrou rested on Gu Yun Ci's back, she felt his broad shoulders and steady stride, filling her heart with an inexplicable sweetness.
Along the way, Su Wanrou skillfully engaged Gu Yun Ci in conversation, showcasing her talent and gentleness.
Her eloquence flowed gracefully, and she occasionally gazed at Gu Yun Ci with admiration, which brought him great pleasure.
Gu Yun Ci's impression of Su Wanrou grew increasingly favorable.
He began to feel that Su Wanrou was gentler and more considerate than Shen Qingyi.
Noticing Gu Yun Ci's change in attitude, Su Wanrou secretly felt proud.
"It seems my plan is going smoothly," she said, a subtle smile playing at the corners of her lips.
She knew that her plan had already succeeded halfway.
After returning to her residence, Su Wanrou expressed her gratitude to Gu Yun Ci.
"Today was truly thanks to Young Master Yun Ci; otherwise, Wanrou wouldn't have known what to do," she said, her eyes sparkling with emotion.
Gu Yun Ci looked into Su Wanrou's sincere gaze, feeling increasingly swayed.
He began to doubt his feelings for Shen Qingyi.
"Perhaps my feelings for her are just a fleeting infatuation," Gu Yun Ci thought to himself. "A woman like Miss Su is much more suited for me."
After Gu Yun Ci left, a barely perceptible cold smile appeared on Su Wanrou's lips.
"Shen Qingyi, just wait and see; I will definitely take you away from Young Master Yun Ci!"
Su Wanrou's eyes were filled with calculation.
She knew that this competition had only just begun.
