But she was pushed down the stairs by her son.
It was only moments before death that I learned my father had been cheating all along.
He had been using filial piety as a shield!
My father had never treated me well.
Yet he constantly lamented how sorry he was to my grandmother and grandfather.
He claimed he wanted to repay them properly.
But what I witnessed with my own eyes was him driving them toward their doom!
“Drink!” Chu Yuntian said, lifting the bowl of water to Ma Jiahui's lips. “If you don’t drink, it’s unfilial!”
I rushed over.
“Dad!”
Chu Yuntian was taken aback, then looked at me with delight. “Yin Yin, today you need to perform well for Dad and prove that our family is all about filial piety.”
I took a deep breath, suppressing the turmoil within me. “But Dad, didn’t you say that the best water to drink is tap water because it’s the cleanest?”
The smile on Chu Yuntian's face froze.
I turned to my grandmother. “Grandma, don’t you think so?”
Grandma's expression was complex, clearly reflecting her thoughts.
She angrily turned her head away. "Children shouldn't speak nonsense."
Chu Yuntian caught on and his expression changed. "Chu Yin, stop messing around here!"
I looked at him coldly. "Dad, I'm just trying to reason with you. How is that messing around?"
"You forcing Mom to drink this bowl of water today doesn't prove your filial piety."
"After all, it's always been Mom taking care of Grandma and Grandpa."
"On the contrary, you..."
Chu Yuntian's face grew darker with my words.
The gazes of those around us began to shift.
"It does seem like that; Chu Yuntian doesn't appear very filial."
"It was always the Chu Family Daughter-in-law taking care of the elders."
"It seems like Chu Yuntian brought them over just to get a promotion."
Chu Yuntian glared at me fiercely.
I quickly pulled Mom behind me to protect her.
A glint flickered in Aunt's eyes as she raised her voice, "Since today is Dad's funeral, according to his last wishes, the inheritance should go to the most filial person."
Chu Yuntian's expression changed dramatically.
Grandma interjected sharply, "The most filial person is obviously my son!"
Aunt sneered, "Mom, who would believe that? Everyone knows it's been Sister-in-law taking care of you all these years."
"In fact, Dad was most satisfied with Sister-in-law."
"Who would have thought Sister-in-law would give birth to such an ungrateful daughter!"
Chu Yuntian, exasperated, retorted, "She is my wife; it's only right for her to take care of Dad and Mom!"
Aunt raised an eyebrow, "Sister-in-law used her own money to buy that house. What makes you think it's a responsibility?"
Chu Yuntian was momentarily speechless.
Grandma opened her mouth, "She is the daughter-in-law; taking care of Mother-in-law is her duty!"
I scoffed, "Yes, she has done so much, yet all the credit goes to you."
"If Grandma looks down on my mom as a daughter-in-law so much, then she surely wouldn't want to accept a single penny of her care."
Grandma's face changed dramatically.
Ma Jiahui also spoke softly, "Yes, Mom, I haven't spent a dime of yours."
Grandma exclaimed, "You are my daughter-in-law! It is your responsibility to take care of me!"
Ma Jiahui replied, "But don't you look down on me?"
Grandma fell silent.
Aunt interjected, "Since everyone has said their piece, why not hear what the lawyer has to say?"
The lawyer took out the will.
"According to the late gentleman's will, the entire estate belongs to Ms. Ma."
Ma Jiahui added, "This money comes from selling my house; it is not part of the marital property."
The lawyer nodded, "That is indeed correct."
Chu Yuntian and Grandma's faces turned ashen.
Grandma stubbornly retorted, "She is being unfilial!"
I scoffed, "Grandma, since you look down on my mom as a daughter-in-law so much, don't ask her for money in the future."
