It was a face of natural beauty that had once captivated him completely, and when he learned that Tong Le's father was a well-known real estate mogul in the area, his infatuation deepened to an obsessive level.
Ke Jie had to admit that he loved Tong Le, enchanted by her slightly adorned features and the wealth that lay behind her. However, his love came with harsh standards; while others cherished their partners tenderly, his love demanded absolute possession and destruction.
With a cheerful smile, Ke Jie stood up from his desk. "What brings you to the office today? You haven't visited in months."
Tong Le looked at Ke Jie’s face, feeling a wave of disgust inside but maintaining a composed exterior. She smiled and pointed to her abdomen. "The doctor advised me to exercise more. I don’t have many entertainment options, so I thought I’d come here for a walk. Are you busy?"
Ke Jie pulled Tong Le onto the sofa and turned to pour warm water. "If that's the case, stay for lunch with me. If I have time this afternoon, I can take you shopping for some prenatal supplements. I remember when Pang Jian's wife was pregnant; she took something called folic acid, right?"
Tong Le watched as Ke Jie meticulously prepared warm water and sugar cubes, pouring the steaming hot water back and forth between two cups, placing them by the window to cool down with the breeze.
If it weren't for her early discovery of Ke Jie’s scheme with Lan Qingqing, she felt certain that with her not-so-bright mind, she would have been completely deceived by him.
What a thoughtful and caring man he was! She had once devoted herself to him, charmed by even the smallest details.
Ke Jie handed a cup to Tong Le. She accepted it; the water was always just right—never too hot or too cold.
He returned to his desk, opening his computer screen. "I’ll buy you a radiation-proof outfit online. Pregnant women shouldn’t be exposed to radiation from computers and such. If you plan on coming to the office often, it’s best to take precautions."
Ke Jie was seriously selecting items on the computer while Tong Le felt a tightness in her chest. Sometimes she couldn’t even tell if this man truly loved her or if it was all an act—so fake it felt real.
Tong Le stood up and said, "I’m going to walk around the lobby; I don’t recognize many of the employees anymore."
"Okay," Ke Jie replied. "I have a meeting soon; you can join me later."
As Tong Le exited Ke Jie’s office, she noticed many unfamiliar faces in the office lobby. At that moment, a female employee brushed past her, unintentionally bumping shoulders with her. The employee dropped her belongings on the floor and deliberately raised her voice in accusation. "Hey! Watch where you're walking!"
Tong Le bent down to pick up the items and handed them back to the female employee.
The employee turned her waist and headed toward Ke Jie’s office.
Tong Le could sense the sarcasm in the female employee's tone; clearly, she had bumped into her on purpose. Many staff members at their desks were whispering among themselves, and Tong Le felt like they were laughing at her expense.
It was hard to say what kind of image Ke Jie had built during the day at Si Li. Perhaps he was the kind of person who devoted himself entirely to supporting his family and being the backbone of the company, embodying a spirit of selfless dedication until death. He had to support a wife like her, who seemed worthless and unable to contribute anything of significance, which might be why the employees at the company looked down on her.
