Ke Jie and Tong Le continued their shopping, and before long, a group of Suit Men led by Zong Zeyu trailed behind them. Wherever Ke Jie went, Zong Zeyu insisted on entering the same stores and clearing them out. It was evident that they were looking for trouble.
Ke Jie felt deliberately targeted, but he had no way to confront them. He could only stand there, fuming silently. What was wrong with these people? Wherever we went, they followed! Who were they, anyway?
He pulled out his phone, ready to make a complaint about the mall.
Tong Le whispered, "I think I just heard someone call that man Zong Zeyu. Isn’t he the big boss of the Zong Family Enterprise?"
In an instant, Ke Jie’s eyes lit up. He had heard of Zong Zeyu’s reputation but had never seen him in person. The Zong Family Enterprise had always been his aspiration; he hoped to one day build a successful business as dominant as theirs!
Suddenly filled with enthusiasm, Ke Jie straightened his collar and thought, I must go say hello!
Tong Le watched helplessly as Ke Jie approached Zong Zeyu, only to be dragged back by a group of bodyguards in a rather embarrassing manner. Tong Le stifled a laugh.
Ke Jie cursed under his breath, careful not to raise his voice too much. To save face, he decided to check out another store.
At that moment, Tong Le received a WeChat message from Zong Zeyu: "Why don’t you come over and say hello?"
Tong Le replied, "I’m afraid your people will drag me back."
Zong Zeyu responded: "Are you afraid that your husband will misinterpret our relationship if you don’t come greet me?"
Tong Le shot back: "Then why don’t you come greet me?"
Zong Zeyu replied: "That’s a good question. If you have no objections, I can come over right now and properly say hello."
Tong Le replied: "I can’t shake the feeling that you’re trying to set me up."
Zong Zeyu assured her: "Why would I harm you? After all, you were my girlfriend for a day; I should be grateful."
Tong Le countered: "Then transfer that piece of real estate to me."
Zong Zeyu simply replied: "No."
Zong Zeyu continued to send messages: "Are you free tonight? I want to invite you out."
Tong Le replied, "??? What do you want this time?"
Zong Zeyu responded, "I want to share some wisdom with you. I feel like your mind isn't very clear right now."
Tong Le shot back, "You're really being strange! I'm busy tonight; I have plans to drink with friends."
Zong Zeyu countered, "Pregnant women shouldn't drink."
Tong Le retorted, "You know I'm not pregnant."
Zong Zeyu asked, "Where are you drinking?"
Tong Le dismissed him, turning away to find Ke Jie.
Zong Zeyu stood there, staring at the chat page between him and Tong Le. Unbeknownst to him, he had been smiling for quite some time. The staff around him watched in stunned silence, not daring to interrupt the engrossed Zong Zeyu. Here was a perfectly composed CEO, grinning at his phone.
When Zong Zeyu finally snapped back to reality, he felt embarrassed, and the staff around him looked equally awkward. He became increasingly aware that ever since their encounter at the private hospital, he had been sinking deeper into his feelings for her. He didn't even know where he found the courage to ask her out without any legitimate reason—he just wanted to see her.
Perhaps it was out of a desire to rescue her; he felt she wasn't doing well, and that worried him. The courage he had buried before was now slowly surfacing.
Zong Zeyu instructed the people around him to prepare some gifts for the two customers they had just served as compensation for the disrupted shopping experience due to the management's inspection.
One staff member replied, "Sure, Zong Zeyu. Should we prepare some maternity and baby products? I noticed they were browsing in a maternity store."
Zong Zeyu said, "No maternity products. Choose a few of the best supplements—something good for women, like cordyceps or skincare products."
Half an hour later, Ke Jie left the mall with Tong Le, both empty-handed as they hadn't found what they were looking for in terms of value for money.
Just as they were about to get into their car, two mall staff members rushed up to Tong Le with large bags in hand. They said hurriedly, "Hello, customers! These are compensation gifts from our mall for you both because today's management inspection caused a poor shopping experience."
Ke Jie looked at the bags in the staff members' hands—seven or eight in total—filled with high-end supplements and skincare products.
Tong Le stared blankly, knowing this was the work of Zong Zeyu, but she never expected such a lavish gesture.
Ke Jie immediately accepted the gift with a smile, saying, "Now that's more like it! I was about to file a complaint against you guys. Alright, let's just forget about today."
Tong Le looked at him in confusion. "How can you accept such an expensive gift? This must be worth thousands! You need to return it!"
Ke Jie simply placed the gift bag in the trunk. "The Zong Family is generous; they probably feared we would complain. When those bodyguards dragged me out earlier, they should have anticipated the consequences."
Unable to argue with Ke Jie, Tong Le felt that his actions revealed a selfish and petty side to him. At that moment, she felt disgusted and nauseated, wondering how she had lived with such a greedy man for so long.
As Ke Jie drove, Tong Le chose to sit in the back seat, her dislike for him growing stronger. Just then, her phone buzzed with a WeChat message from Zong Zeyu: "Where are you drinking tonight?"
Tong Le replied, "Why did you send such an expensive gift? I don't understand. I want to return it, but Ke Jie won't let me."
Zong Zeyu responded, "So where are you drinking tonight?"
"Can you answer my question first?" she replied.
"It seems you don't want that piece of land back," he said.
With a sigh of resignation, she replied, "At a bar on Changqing Road."
"See you tonight," Zong Zeyu texted back.
