Half an hour later, Lan Qingqing arrived at Tong Le's home, carrying water and fresh flowers. Inside, only Zhang Huizhi was present.
When Zhang Huizhi opened the door and saw Lan Qingqing, her face lit up with joy. "Oh, it's you, Lan Qingqing! Why didn't you give me a heads-up? Come in quickly!"
As Lan Qingqing changed her shoes, she replied, "I’m not busy today. I remembered you mentioned feeling unwell last time, so I thought I’d come to check on you. Usually, Tong Le and Ke Wenjie are both busy, and there’s no one at home to keep you company. I just wanted to see how you were doing!"
Her cheerful chatter warmed Zhang Huizhi's heart. No wonder she considered Lan Qingqing a suitable daughter-in-law; she wished Tong Le would hurry up and divorce Ke Wenjie so that she could bring this sweet girl into the family.
Lan Qingqing began to massage Zhang Huizhi's shoulders and knead her legs while glancing around the house. "Auntie, is there anything that needs tidying up? I guess Ke Wenjie and Tong Le will be home late from work. Should I help you clean up?"
Zhang Huizhi waved her hand dismissively. "No need! Let Tong Le handle it when she gets back. I don’t understand what’s going on in that girl’s head—suddenly deciding to go back to work! She’s such a lazy bum; what does she think she’s doing at the company? She’s just going to cause trouble for Ke Wenjie!"
Turning her head slightly, Zhang Huizhi couldn’t help but vent her frustrations. "What can she possibly accomplish? She’s pregnant and insists on working? She can’t even manage the housework properly and still dreams of being a supportive partner for Ke Wenjie at work? I’m really worried about Ke Wenjie getting dragged down by her!"
Lan Qingqing chimed in, "While I don’t oppose Tong Le going back to work, you do have a point. She’s been at home for three years; suddenly entering the workforce will definitely be an adjustment for her. Just today, I went to the office and saw her arguing with Ke Wenjie."
Zhang Huizhi turned sharply. "She dared to argue with Ke Wenjie? In the office? Has she lost her mind? What is she thinking? Does she not realize who runs the company—it's Ke Wenjie! Is she trying to assert her authority? How dare she!"
As she spoke, Zhang Huizhi rolled up her sleeves, ready to confront Tong Le.
Lan Qingqing quickly reassured her, "It’s not a big deal; it was just about an important project. Tong Le wanted to put her name on it, and Ke Wenjie thought it was fine since it involved a major company. But Tong Le seemed a bit upset."
Zhang Huizhi stood up abruptly. "This is ridiculous! Does she not know her own limitations? If it weren’t for my son Ke Wenjie, would Tongshan Real Estate be where it is today? The company would have gone under long ago! Now Tong Le wants to carve out a space for herself in the office? What was she thinking when her parents were sick? Such an ungrateful child—she's biting the hand that feeds her!"
Lan Qingqing grabbed Zhang Huizhi's arm playfully. "Auntie, please don’t get angry. Maybe Tong Le doesn’t mean what you think; she just wants to find something to do and get some fresh air. Honestly, you shouldn’t worry about any ulterior motives from Tong Le. After all these years at home, she must feel out of touch with the outside world. Just today at the office, I saw a male colleague flirting with her—I’m worried those men with bad intentions might lead her astray."
Upon hearing this, Zhang Huizhi exploded with anger; she could not tolerate the thought of Tong Le having feelings for Ke Wenjie!
She pulled out her phone to call Tong Le immediately, but Lan Qingqing hurriedly stopped her. "Auntie, don’t act impulsively! You need to think this through; after all, Ke Wenjie agreed to let Tong Le go back to work. You can’t go against him!"
Zhang Huizhi took a deep breath; Lan Qingqing's words made sense. She realized that acting out of anger might lead to irrational decisions that could upset Ke Wenjie.
Sitting back down on the sofa, Zhang Huizhi patted Lan Qingqing's hand. "You’re right! Thank you for reminding me! I need to think about how to handle this situation."
Lan Qingqing suggested gently, "You really don’t need to worry too much—just have a good talk with Tong Le and encourage her to stay home and focus on her pregnancy. You know how chaotic the workplace can be; it won’t help her during this time. I just want Tong Le to have a safe pregnancy; I can’t bear seeing her struggle in that environment."
With a look of concern on her face, Lan Qingqing added, "Tong Le is my best friend; her child is like my own—I care deeply about them."
Zhang Huizhi grasped Lan Qingqing's hand tightly; she had never met such a kind-hearted and perceptive young woman before.
