"Lan Qingqing," she said, "why don't you talk to your cousin and let him know you're not going to do this anymore? From the looks of you, it seems you have no idea about your cousin's family matters. The situation is that I'm pregnant with your cousin's child, and your proper sister-in-law is also pregnant with his child. However, she doesn't know about this, so your cousin brought you in as a savior to help act out this charade."
Lan Qingqing shrugged. "You’ll find out sooner or later. It’s better to know early than late; otherwise, I worry there might be misunderstandings along the way."
Mo Kai Liang felt as if a bucket of cold water had been poured over him. After all this time, it turned out his cousin Ke Jie had cheated on his wife, and he was now entangled with the same woman.
It suddenly dawned on him that the reason his cousin had brought him to the city to play the role of a father was entirely because he couldn't have children himself. It made sense that he would want to pass off the responsibility of raising children and women onto someone else.
Mo Kai Liang stood frozen in place.
"Are you not going home?" Lan Qingqing asked. "It's chilly out here. Why don't you come sit at my place for a while?"
He looked up at her seriously. "If I go back to the countryside tomorrow morning, who do you plan to find as your fake boyfriend?"
Lan Qingqing shrugged again. "I don’t know; anyway, Ke Jie promised me he would help solve this problem."
Mo Kai Liang pointed at her belly. "What does having this child mean for you? Are you hoping for my brother's divorce? But you just said my sister-in-law is also pregnant. Knowing my brother as I do, he won't get divorced; otherwise, the villagers will gossip about him being a man who was kicked out by his wife, coming in with nothing and leaving with nothing."
Lan Qingqing laughed at that. "So what do you think I should do? I really don’t know what to do right now; I feel like my life has been ruined by Ke Jie."
She deliberately exposed herself as a seemingly fragile woman pretending to be strong, having fallen for the wrong person and stumbled into a wrong life path. Now that she wanted to back out, there seemed to be no way out. She knew she shouldn't have done this, but no one could help her.
After thinking for a moment, Mo Kai Liang realized he was just as confused. Logically and emotionally, he shouldn’t take on this mess, but at that moment, sympathy welled up within him. Just five minutes ago, he had felt small and insignificant in front of Lan Qingqing; he was just a country boy who had crossed paths with a city girl from a wealthy family—an utterly unequal match.
But now he felt suddenly empowered. Lan Qingqing's earlier display of vulnerability and helplessness made her seem like a pitiful woman lost on the wrong path. He felt like he was her only savior, someone important who could rescue her from her plight.
He had never felt such an intense sense of being needed by a woman before. Back in the village, whenever women learned that he couldn't have children during matchmaking sessions, they would look at him with disdain one after another, leaving him feeling dejected and defeated.
In the brief silence that followed, Lan Qingqing observed every subtle expression on Mo Kai Liang's face and realized she had him wrapped around her finger. She knew that Mo Kai Liang was likely dreaming of playing the hero.
She understood men too well; give them an educated and gentle wife who can manage both home and social affairs, and they wouldn't appreciate it. On the contrary, if they were given a chance to rescue a woman teetering on the edge of despair, they would go to great lengths just to prove themselves as heroes.
Lan Qingqing scoffed inwardly; men shouldn't be indulged because the more they were coddled, the more outrageous their behavior became. Tong Le was a living example—she was already considered a good woman by traditional standards, yet what did it bring her? Just Ke Jie’s scheming and disdain, living apart from her husband on separate beds until she became just another tired housewife.
She didn't want to live Tong Le's life; hers had to be vibrant and colorful.
Suddenly, Mo Kai Liang looked up with determination in his eyes. "No matter whose child is in your belly, since I've come to the city and agreed to my cousin's request, I will help you until the baby is born. I also want to make something of myself in this city!"
Listening to his ridiculous ambitions of making something of himself in this city—a place where class barriers were solidified and opportunities for sudden wealth were nonexistent—she couldn't help but think how impossible it was for someone like him to rise above his station. Only someone as naive as Mo Kai Liang would be dazzled by the bright lights of the city and dream of living like a wealthy person one day. In reality, even she needed to exhaust all means and strategies just to cross class lines!
She had long realized that working hard wouldn't lead to wealth or success; the quickest way was to find a foolish man with deep pockets and leap into marriage for an upward shift.
Lan Qingqing smiled lightly at him. "Come on over to my place for a bit."
