Zhang Huizhi turned to Lan Qingqing, her dissatisfaction evident. "What is this?"
Lan Qingqing, unfazed, stood up and walked to the door, casually closing it behind her. She then called out to Mo Kai Liang in the kitchen, "Mo Kai Liang, once you're done cooking, could you help my mom with a few things?"
Mo Kai Liang responded affirmatively while continuing his work.
Lan Qingqing turned back and took Zhang Huizhi's hand, offering reassurance. "It's okay, Auntie. My mom is much better now. She can't take care of herself for basic needs, but it’s manageable. Please don’t worry."
Zhang Huizhi frowned deeply. Initially, she had given Lan Qingqing a perfect score in her mind, but now, due to the bedridden He Shui Xian, she felt compelled to deduct points from Lan Qingqing.
In comparison, Tong Le was better off; after all, both her parents had passed away, leaving behind a substantial inheritance for her son Ke Wenjie. But Lan Qingqing seemed to come from a family without money; otherwise, she wouldn’t be so obedient. Yet it baffled Zhang Huizhi that someone like Tong Le could still require assistance with basic needs.
Zhang Huizhi expressed her disdain. "How much do you have to care for your mother? Do you have to clean her every day? Do you do it yourself?"
Lan Qingqing nodded. "Yes, it's been quite a lot of work. But since Ke Wenjie rented this place for us, it has become much easier for my mom and me."
Zhang Huizhi voiced her concern. "So if you marry Ke Wenjie in the future, you won't bring your mother into my home, right?"
Lan Qingqing thought for a moment. She hadn’t intended to bring He Shui Xian along if she married Ke Wenjie; she planned to send her mother to a nursing home since Ke Wenjie would be paying for it anyway. That way, she could live freely and just visit occasionally.
However, now she wanted to turn the tables and deal with her future mother-in-law Zhang Huizhi; she couldn’t let Zhang Huizhi control her before marriage.
Lan Qingqing deliberately said, "I was thinking of taking my mom everywhere with us. If we move into a bigger house in the future, we can just put her in a small room and take care of her needs without much hassle."
Zhang Huizhi quickly calculated in her mind. This Lan Qingqing clearly came from a poor background; taking care of He Shui Xian would undoubtedly cost a lot of money—money that would likely come from her son Ke Wenjie!
Zhang Huizhi felt displeased but had no choice. Compared to the children in Lan Qingqing’s and Tong Le’s wombs, she preferred Lan Qingqing more; she was simply tired of Tong Le's lifeless face!
When dinner was served, Mo Kai Liang didn’t even sit down but went straight to the bedroom to help clean He Shui Xian.
At the dining table, Zhang Huizhi and Lan Qingqing sat facing each other.
As they ate, Zhang Huizhi commented on Mo Kai Liang's cooking skills. "His cooking is quite good; he learned it in the countryside. You should learn from him while he’s here in the city—cooking will be your responsibility in the future."
Lan Qingqing raised an eyebrow at this sudden lecture and thought she wouldn’t easily comply with Zhang Huizhi’s wishes.
"Auntie," she replied, "my cooking is better than Mo Kai Liang's! Didn’t you try my rib soup last time? I rarely cook unless Ke Wenjie is around; then I make him some nourishing soup."
Zhang Huizhi insisted, "You should also learn how to make simple dishes. When Ke Wenjie is working outside, you'll need to stay home and take care of meals for both him and the children. This is something Tong Le does well; I’ve helped her improve her cooking skills bit by bit since she started out terrible."
Upon hearing Zhang Huizhi compare her to Tong Le, Lan Qingqing's competitive spirit was ignited. "Alright then! I’ll learn more."
