After breakfast, Tong Le and Tian Ling were washing dishes in the kitchen, while Li Hongmei was in the living room watching television. Occasionally, she would express her excitement about how impressive the big TV looked!
As Tian Ling scrubbed the dishes, she hummed a little tune.
Tong Le smiled and said, "Your relationship with your mom seems to be getting better. I remember back in college, I was afraid to mention your parents in front of you, worried you might have a strong reaction."
Tian Ling replied, "Yeah, the trauma from my childhood made it hard for me to face my father. Just seeing them both would remind me of the past. When I was assaulted by my uncle, my parents didn't believe me at first; they thought I was lying on purpose. Because of that, I've kept my distance from them."
Tong Le asked, "So has the conflict been resolved? It seems like your mom has taken good care of you since she came to the city."
Tian Ling nodded. "My mom is quite supportive of me, but as for my dad..." She forced a smile. "Forget it, I don’t want to talk about him. We don’t have much contact anyway."
Tian Ling then asked, "What’s your plan? How do you intend to bring my mom closer to your mother-in-law?"
Tong Le replied seriously, "If all goes well, this afternoon, Ke Wenjie will take me and Zhang Huizhi to the new house sales office. Recently, Ke Wenjie has been interested in a property there; I think that’s the perfect place for our setup."
Looking toward the living room, Tong Le suggested, "Later, I’ll take Aunt Li shopping at the mall and buy her a couple of qipaos. Zhang Huizhi is very particular about appearances; if Aunt Li wears something expensive, it will definitely make an impression."
Tian Ling turned and shouted toward the living room, "Mom! We’re taking you shopping later to buy some new clothes!"
Li Hongmei responded enthusiastically, "Shopping? That’s my favorite!"
The three of them headed out. Tong Le personally chose two outfits for Li Hongmei; they were traditional qipaos from Zhang Huizhi's favorite brand—clothes that Zhang Huizhi herself would hesitate to buy.
Tong Le dressed Li Hongmei according to Zhang Huizhi's aesthetic standards. The outfit was something Zhang Huizhi would never splurge on—a deep red qipao that suited Li Hongmei perfectly.
To make this scene more convincing, Tong Le borrowed someone from Dao Wen—Zhou Zishuo. Zhou Zishuo was the younger brother of Dao Wen's ex-boyfriend Zhou Feng. Tong Le had met him a few times; he had thick eyebrows and big eyes with a buzz cut and a straightforward demeanor that carried a hint of military discipline.
Tong Le planned for Zhou Zishuo to play Li Hongmei's son while Li Hongmei would portray an extremely wealthy socialite.
Everything went according to plan.
At two o'clock in the afternoon, Tong Le arrived at the sales office just as Ke Wenjie and Zhang Huizhi were getting out of their car.
Zhang Huizhi rolled her eyes at Tong Le as soon as she saw him and then followed closely behind Ke Wenjie.
Ke Wenjie approached Tong Le with a frown and asked, "Where have you been all morning? You didn’t even bother to call me when you woke up? If I hadn’t called Tian Ling last night, I wouldn’t have known..."
Before he could finish his sentence, Zhang Huizhi seized the opportunity to confront Tong Le. She stepped forward and pointed at him accusingly. "You stayed out all night again? Tong Le, you’re really bold now! Just because you're pregnant doesn’t mean you can run wild! Do you think our Ke family is easy to bully? Just because you're expecting doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want!"
Tong Le remained calm; she knew that last night Lan Qingqing had gone over to Ke Wenjie's place. She had been worried about how to handle this situation when suddenly Zhang Huizhi provided her with the perfect opportunity.
Tong Le deliberately said, "Mom, you weren't at my house last night? Then how come this morning the milk delivery person called me and said a woman received the milk? The delivery person called me early to collect next month's payment. I thought about how Ke Wenjie probably hadn't woken up yet, so I wanted to ask the delivery person to leave the milk at the door and I would transfer the money to him via WeChat. But the delivery person said the door opened as soon as he knocked, and a woman answered to receive the milk."
Tong Le's gaze shifted directly to Ke Wenjie. "Wasn't it you who opened the door this morning? Is there another woman in the house?"
Ke Wenjie remained silent.
Zhang Huizhi's expression mirrored a sudden deflation, while on Ke Wenjie's face, there was a hint of worry as if disaster had struck.
The atmosphere was strangely unanimous and eerily quiet.
