At three in the afternoon, the classical opera performance in the concert hall came to an end. Zhang Huizhi nearly dozed off in her seat, having thought she was treating Kong Hongmei to a lively stage show, only to discover it was a classical performance after purchasing the tickets.
Kong Hongmei, however, was thoroughly engaged. As they exited the auditorium, they headed to a nearby upscale café.
"You treat me to the opera, and I'll treat you to coffee," Kong Hongmei said cheerfully. "I'm so happy today!"
Once their coffee arrived, Zhang Huizhi brought up a serious topic. "Hongmei, about that investment you mentioned yesterday—are you really out of available funds? Honestly, I don't have many ways to make money either. That large sum just sits in my account, and it makes me anxious."
Kong Hongmei smiled and replied, "My dear sister, it's rare for us to hit it off like this. To be honest, I really don't want to pull you into the investment circle. If we make a profit, that's great, but what if we lose? Then we wouldn't even be able to remain friends."
Zhang Huizhi became serious and assured her, "Oh! That won't happen! I understand the investment world; whether we profit or lose isn't something we can control. We just need to choose the right industry direction and take a gamble, right? I'm someone who believes in taking risks and accepting losses; I'm not afraid of losing."
Kong Hongmei questioned her, "Really? You're not afraid of losing?"
Zhang Huizhi quickly pulled out her phone and showed Kong Hongmei her bank balance. "Look! My son just transferred me a million dollars—exactly one million! He said this money is just sitting with me for now; whether I put it in a fixed deposit or buy government bonds is up to me. But you know how little interest fixed deposits earn! And how much can government bonds really make?"
Kong Hongmei pretended to ponder and asked, "Have you told your son about your investment plans?"
Zhang Huizhi replied, "I don't plan on telling him. All his money is with me. I have another card with another million in cash that has been sitting there for almost a year now—there's nowhere to invest it!"
The more she spoke, the more distressed she became. "You know how other people's money can keep generating income while mine just sits there? Who wouldn't be frustrated by that?"
Kong Hongmei rolled her eyes internally and confirmed, "So right now, you have two million dollars in spare cash?"
Zhang Huizhi nodded eagerly. "Yes! This recent million plus the other amounts my son transferred to me add up to two million—all just sitting there with no investment opportunities!"
Kong Hongmei silently chuckled at how things had turned out; she initially only wanted Zhang Huizhi to cough up one million but now found herself potentially getting two million.
"I actually happen to have a two-million-dollar funding gap," Kong Hongmei said. "But I was planning on using it for my own needs. Plus, we've only known each other for a couple of days; it's not good for me to pull you into investing right away."
The more Kong Hongmei resisted, the more Zhang Huizhi felt this was an excellent investment opportunity. She firmly believed that Kong Hongmei was a capable investor!
"Please help me out here, Hongmei," Zhang Huizhi pleaded. "Let me have that two-million-dollar quota! Your family is so wealthy; you won't miss this amount for investment. How about this: once I make profits from this two million principal, I'll give you five percent?"
Kong Hongmei continued to refuse. "That's not what I mean; I think investing carries risks. Don't rush into this circle just because you're excited. Even if this project seems solid, there are still risks involved."
Zhang Huizhi was completely fixated on her desire. "Do you even want to be my friend? If you acknowledge our friendship, then let me have that two-million-dollar quota! I promise I'll take you out every day to enjoy opera! Didn't you just say no one accompanies you for this? I love opera; we can go anywhere together!"
Kong Hongmei felt the timing was right and feigned an expression of helplessness as she sighed. "Alright then, consider it helping out a good friend. It's rare for me to meet someone like you who clicks so well with me; it's truly fate."
"I happen to have the project proposal and contract with me," Kong Hongmei continued. "Originally, I planned to go to my son's company this afternoon for him to sign the contract under his name for investment purposes. Now that I'm giving you this two-million-dollar quota, you'll sign this contract instead."
Zhang Huizhi was ecstatic; the opportunity for wealth was right before her eyes! She needed to seize the moment and get that contract signed before Kong Hongmei changed her mind!
In just half an hour, Zhang Huizhi completed the entire process, transferring twenty million in cash to the company's account in batches. With the investment finalized, a weight lifted off her shoulders; all she had to do now was wait for her fortune to come!
As Zhang Huizhi left the café with the contract in hand, Kong Hongmei cautiously stepped out after she was completely gone. She wandered through two streets before finally getting into a car where Dao Wen and Tong Le were waiting.
Kong Hongmei sighed in relief and said, "The twenty million is accounted for, right? The contract is signed, and my task is complete!"
Tong Le, sitting in the passenger seat, turned around to reassure her. "Aunt Ke, don’t worry. By the time Zhang Huizhi realizes what’s happened, the only entity she’ll be dealing with is the shell company listed on the contract—there's no connection to you. The investment scheme Dao Wen and I set up is entirely legal and follows all proper procedures; there are no legal issues whatsoever. As for your real-world contact with Zhang Huizhi, we’ve already arranged for someone to destroy the surveillance footage from the sales office, concert hall, and restaurant inside and out. There’s no evidence to prove that you two ever had any real contact."
Kong Hongmei replied, "I know; Tian Ling has already informed me. Besides, this WeChat account of mine isn’t even mine—it was purchased from the dark web by Tian Ling. Now, as long as I log out of this account, Zhang Huizhi will never be able to find me."
She reflected, "Zhang Huizhi really must be naive; she didn’t even verify my identity and dared to invest twenty million. It’s hard to believe there are truly such foolish people in this world."
