Tong Le looked at the message on her phone screen, the situation unfolding just as she had anticipated, though a bit faster than she expected. She continued to leisurely prepare soup and serve dishes when suddenly, her phone rang. It was Ke Wenjie.
As soon as the call connected, Ke Wenjie sounded impatient. "Have you left yet? Hurry to the police station; Mom has lost all the money from selling the house!"
Tong Le sighed softly. Ke Wenjie was like a relentless taskmaster, never allowing anyone to feel at ease. "I know, I'll tidy up and head out soon," she replied.
After hanging up, Tong Le brought each dish to the dining table, arranging them neatly. She then glanced towards the bathroom, where the sound of running water was reassuringly loud.
She casually picked up a meat bun and devoured it in two bites before quickly getting dressed. Five minutes after she left home, Zong Zeyu slowly emerged from the bathroom.
He radiated warmth, his hair still damp and dripping. Upon seeing the bountiful breakfast on the table, he noticed only one set of utensils laid out. He wandered around the house but found no sign of Tong Le; even at the entrance, only his shoes remained.
He picked up his phone and saw a voice message from Tong Le in their WeChat chat. "Make sure to eat well; I'm heading to the police station. Ke Wenjie and Zhang Huizhi reported it—it's about that investment issue. Oh, by the way, I've already eaten, so don't worry."
After listening to her voice message once, Zong Zeyu replayed it, enjoying her reassurance in those three words: "Don't worry." She knew he was concerned about her.
Zong Zeyu sat down at the dining table. Not one for taking photos, he lifted his phone and snapped a picture of the food spread before him, even posting it on social media with the caption: "Wife's cooking."
Soon enough, comments from friends and family flooded in.
Wen Cuizhi: "Not bad! I'm quite satisfied with this cooking. Let her come over to our place to show off sometime; we should invite Wen too."
Zong Jin: "No wonder you don't come home."
Wen: "You've worked hard, little girl."
Zong Jin replied to Wen: "Why haven't you responded to my WeChat?"
Wu Youyou commented on Zong Jin's post: "I just sent you a message; why didn't you reply? Instead, you're here chatting???"
Fan Qinghua: "The nutrition looks balanced, but just the two of you probably won't finish it all. If I join in, it'll be just right."
Zhou Ting: "Aren't you still single?"
Zong Zeyu had no habit of reading comments. After posting on his social media, he began to enjoy his breakfast. During the meal, he made sure to send a message to his subordinates, instructing them to keep a close watch on Tong Le and Wen as they arranged their overseas investments. He emphasized that if any uncontrollable incidents occurred, they should report to him immediately.
