The exaggerated scene before Zhang Huizhi ignited a surge of anger within her. She could hardly believe that her husband, Ke Wei Qiang, had brought his Concubine into the city! Such a blatant act showed he had no regard for her at all! They weren't even divorced yet!
Zhang Huizhi gripped the iron railing in front of her, her teeth clenched, as if she might crush it in her fury. She watched as her husband, Ke Wei Qiang, drew closer, while the woman trailing behind him wore a shy and bewildered expression, resembling a naive little rabbit. It was obvious she was putting on an act, and it disgusted Zhang Huizhi.
She turned to her son, Ke Wenjie, and exclaimed, "Is this your doing? Did you tell your father to bring that wretched woman here? What does he think I am? Just a piece of trash?"
Zhang Huizhi's fury erupted, but Ke Wenjie quickly explained, "I didn't say anything to him! I don’t even know what’s been going on with him lately; he acted on his own."
Determined, Zhang Huizhi rolled up her sleeves and prepared to climb over the railing. Ke Wenjie kindly reminded her, "But you and Dad have already lost feelings for each other, right? Besides, are you sure you can take him on?"
Zhang Huizhi hesitated as she swung her leg over the railing but then pulled back timidly. Perhaps it had been too long since they had separated; she almost forgot how she used to be beaten by Ke Wei Qiang. She had insisted on moving to the city with her son to escape from that abusive alcoholic scoundrel.
Her marriage with Ke Wei Qiang was nothing more than a formality; both of them knew that their feelings had long since faded. They refrained from divorcing mainly to avoid becoming the subject of gossip in the village. Additionally, Zhang Huizhi had no desire to find another partner; marriage was an ephemeral concept that held little significance for her. What truly mattered was her son, Ke Wenjie’s future.
With this thought in mind, Zhang Huizhi felt less angry. She calmed herself and began to consider Ke Wei Qiang's purpose for coming into the city. She couldn't afford to confront him; she needed to leverage his presence to eliminate Tong Le, the thorn in her side.
Taking a deep breath, she composed herself and said softly, "Son, I will keep my emotions in check. Don't worry."
Ke Wenjie replied quietly, "Choosing to endure is wise. If we can achieve two goals with one action this time, it will benefit both of us."
Zhang Huizhi looked at her son’s profile in surprise; he seemed unusually calm and cold. She began to understand that by "two goals," he meant getting rid of both Ke Wei Qiang and Tong Le—two sources of trouble.
Zhang Huizhi gasped softly; suddenly, she felt less hatred toward Ke Wei Qiang. If this scoundrel could contribute something valuable at the end of his life, perhaps she could forgive him for all the torment he had put her through.
At that moment, Ke Wei Qiang approached with his Concubine, Jin Feng, right in front of Zhang Huizhi and Ke Wenjie.
Ke Wei Qiang was dressed decently in a black short-sleeve shirt and jacket paired with dark blue trousers. He resembled a more mature version of Ke Wenjie but without glasses and slightly overweight; his eyes held a fierce glint.
Upon seeing Ke Wenjie, Ke Wei Qiang beamed with joy. After all, everyone in the village knew that Ke Wenjie was his pride and joy—the most outstanding young man to emerge from their community.
Ke Wei Qiang embraced Ke Wenjie warmly before turning to introduce Jin Feng. "This is my son, Ke Wenjie," he said.
Then he added for Ke Wenjie's benefit, "This is Jin Feng—your Aunt Jin."
Ke Wenjie did not show any hostility toward Jin Feng; he had long accepted the reality of his father's lack of affection for his mother and had no intention of interfering in their personal lives.
He greeted Jin Feng politely before turning back to his mother and saying, "Let's head out first; the car is waiting outside."
