Ke Wei Qiang walked straight ahead, with Jin Feng following closely beside him, carrying a bag. Throughout the journey, Ke Wei Qiang didn’t spare a glance at Zhang Huizhi; his annoyance towards her matched her disdain for him.
Jin Feng, on the other hand, kept her head down and remained silent. Whatever Ke Wei Qiang instructed her to do, she complied without question. Since he hadn’t asked her to greet Zhang Huizhi, she simply did nothing.
Zhang Huizhi was taken aback. She pointed at Ke Wei Qiang and cursed, “You old fool! Are you blind? Can’t you see me? I really want to gouge your eyes out and throw them into a cesspool!”
Ke Wei Qiang ignored Zhang Huizhi completely. It was no wonder he felt like slapping her every time he saw her; she truly deserved it.
Jin Feng discreetly glanced back at Zhang Huizhi but quickly turned away again. She couldn’t bear to see the fierce expression on Zhang Huizhi’s face; it was quite frightening.
Zhang Huizhi wanted to step forward and slap Ke Wei Qiang twice but was stopped in her tracks by Ke Wenjie, who quietly warned her, “Have you forgotten what you just said?”
Zhang Huizhi felt as if she was about to burst from pent-up anger. She pressed her hand against her chest, trying to suppress her fury. “I can endure this!”
Following behind, Zhang Huizhi’s gaze fell on the petite Jin Feng. She looked like someone easy to bully, which explained why she could live with someone as hot-tempered as Ke Wei Qiang. It was likely that Jin Feng had endured quite a bit of abuse from him in the past!
Thinking this way eased some of Zhang Huizhi’s frustration.
Once they got into the business vehicle, Ke Wenjie drove while Ke Wei Qiang sat in the passenger seat, and the father and son began chatting about their recent lives.
In the back seat, Jin Feng sat upright while Zhang Huizhi occupied the seat next to her.
Jin Feng didn’t dare turn her head or speak; even taking a deep breath required careful consideration.
Zhang Huizhi scrutinized Jin Feng’s profile. There was something somewhat attractive about her—small nose, delicate face—she looked no older than forty. Overall, she gave off an impression of being easy to push around.
With a hint of provocation in her tone, Zhang Huizhi remarked, “You must have taken quite a beating, right? That scoundrel Ke Wei Qiang hits people when he drinks; how do you put up with him?”
Jin Feng forced a smile and replied, “Ke Wei Qiang doesn’t hit people.”
Zhang Huizhi scoffed coldly. “Stop pretending! You’re defending that scoundrel? If he hits you, just admit it! It’s not like you’re not thick-skinned enough to stick around him. But I’ll give you credit for being able to take a beating. Personally, I won’t get involved in your messy affairs.”
Jin Feng continued to force a smile and insisted, “Ke Wei Qiang really hasn’t hit me; he’s actually quite nice.”
Zhang Huizhi straightened up and began to argue back. “What’s so hard about admitting it? Everyone in the village knows he hits people when he drinks! After all this time with him, how could I not know?! I’ve never seen such a useless man!”
After saying this, Zhang Huizhi deliberately glanced at Ke Wei Qiang in the front passenger seat. She felt a bit cautious; if it weren’t for him and Ke Wenjie being engrossed in their conversation and not hearing her badmouthing him from the backseat, she wouldn’t have dared speak so boldly. Just thinking about those times she had been beaten made her scalp tighten.
Jin Feng whispered defensively, “Ke Wei Qiang really hasn’t hit me; he’s quite good.”
