Several times, Zhang Huizhi prepared to stand up and hit someone. If it weren't for Ke Wenjie pressing down hard on her leg under the table, there would have already been bloodshed in the conference room.
Tong Le could see Zhang Huizhi's fury; she almost hoped things would escalate, ideally to the point where it became public knowledge, reaching the police station and the courtroom. Her life had already been completely ruined by Ke Wenjie, and now the person who felt the most fear was not her, but him.
Ke Wenjie had not given up; he still clung to a shred of belief that he could persuade Tong Le. Just like in the past, when he dictated everything, Tong Le had never once refuted him. He thought that if Tong Le had an affair, it could be understood—after all, Zong Zeyu was wealthy and influential. It was only natural for Tong Le to be tempted. He had never had a moment's rest in their seven years together, and as for infidelity and emotional entanglements, he was well-versed in them, having made countless mistakes.
Thus, he could temporarily accept Tong Le's change of heart; she had only erred this once while he had made dozens of mistakes before. Ke Wenjie comforted himself with these twisted justifications, essentially brainwashing himself. He could not live without Tong Le—not now, at least. He needed to maintain his position and status.
Otherwise, his plans with his brother Ke Wei Qiang would be impossible to execute. He had to salvage this marriage!
Looking at Tong Le earnestly, Ke Wenjie said, "I know you're just angry right now. Perhaps during our time running the company, I've caused some misunderstandings. But none of that matters; we are still family. The money I earn for the company is not just mine; it's ours. My dear wife, I’ve already expressed my willingness to forgive your infidelity this time. After all, marriage can be dull; occasional indiscretions can be understood. You must think about the future—do you really want to carry the label of infidelity for the rest of your life? The consequences for men who cheat are far less severe than those for women. Historically, society has always condemned women who stray while turning a blind eye to men’s indiscretions."
Ke Wenjie tried to make Tong Le understand that society was unfair—especially towards women.
Tong Le's eyes flashed as she couldn't help but laugh out loud. "So you do know! You’ve always known about your privileges as a man because this society offers no equality! You secretly enjoy the invisible benefits this sick society grants you men while acting recklessly as if cheating on a few women is nothing serious. Meanwhile, if we women stray within marriage, we face public scorn and baseless accusations from everyone around us—friends and strangers alike can trample on us without hesitation. Why? Because women are worthless? Because we deserve to suffer?"
At that moment, Tong Le looked at Ke Wenjie with even more disgust. She felt that all his education had gone to waste; those cultural insights hadn’t made him any wiser or more rational. Instead, they had allowed him to exploit the gray areas and rules of society for his own gain.
Knowing what was wrong yet still committing wrongs was a grave sin.
Ke Wenjie's emotions flared up. "Are you arguing with me? Do you want to tear apart the last shred of dignity we have left? Are you so shameless? Maintaining our marriage isn’t just for me; it’s for you too! This society is inherently unjust towards women and even harsher! If you don’t uphold your role as a wife, you’ll bear that stigma for life! Have you considered your unborn child? Do you want them to grow up hearing others say their mother is a promiscuous woman?"
Ke Wenjie's expression twisted in anger as he continued, "I can tolerate your infidelity just this once! When you come to your senses one day, you'll want to return to our family. Your child is not an issue—I can raise them myself or Zong Zeyu can help if he wants to. I’m maintaining our marriage for your sake! No matter what mistakes you've made in the past, my refusal to divorce you means our relationship is intact! Others won't dare speak ill of you! It's such a simple truth—can’t you understand?"
Ke Wenjie solemnly reminded her to consider her reputation carefully.
Tong Le silently watched Ke Wenjie’s desperate attempts at reasoning. If she hadn’t already awakened from his manipulation, she might have fallen prey to his second round of brainwashing.
At first glance, his lengthy arguments seemed somewhat reasonable; however, upon closer inspection, they were merely attempts at manipulation—traps designed by him to ensnare her in a moral quandary while he looked down on her judgment.
Tong Le smiled softly—a quiet smile tinged with madness. "You really are a master of logic! If this were seven years ago, I might have easily been led astray by you."
With her hands clasped on the table before her, she leaned slightly toward Ke Wenjie across from her. "In this world, only you would point fingers at me; only your twisted mind would label me as promiscuous. Only your outdated theories that dehumanize women would suggest my child would look down on their mother! Ke Wenjie, step outside and take a look—no one cares about my infidelity! My life continues as usual; I still enjoy everything without missing a beat! My child will only feel proud of me because I’ve freed myself from male definitions and constraints! Because I’ve distanced myself from scum and eliminated evil!"
Ke Wenjie felt choked by Tong Le's words. At that moment, Zhang Huizhi pushed Ke Wenjie's hand away from her arm and stood up, pointing at Tong Le while shouting angrily, "You’re such a despicable woman! You’ve hidden this so well! A creature like you will only give birth to little monsters! You’re worse than an animal; calling you a wild chicken is an insult!"
Tong Le waited patiently for Zhang Huizhi to strike; as soon as she did, the surveillance cameras in the conference room would capture it all—preferably with bloodshed—to bolster her upcoming divorce case.
Ke Wenjie remained calm as he once again blocked Zhang Huizhi's path and turned toward Tong Le. "Alright, I admit my mistakes; my attitude was wrong. I shouldn’t have defined you or spoken those threatening words."
Ke Wenjie endured again and again.
Tong Le observed quietly.
At this moment, she realized that she had underestimated Ke Wenjie. She had always thought of him as a man with a strong sense of pride, but it seemed that was not the case. In fact, she was starting to lose track of his boundaries.
Tong Le spoke again, deliberately trying to provoke Ke Wenjie. "When did your temper become so good? What happened to the you who used to be so decisive? Look at you now; I can hardly recognize you."
She smiled and added, "It seems that being the Phoenix Man isn't easy. It's not so simple to swallow your pride, is it?"
