Zhang Huizhi cautiously walked to the corner of the office and answered the phone, speaking in a hushed tone, "What’s going on? I’ll be done soon!"
Lan Qingqing replied, "Are you at the station? Did the security let you in? Have you seen Zong Zeyu? Did he agree to help you get Ke Wenjie out?"
Zhang Huizhi whispered back, "Not only did he agree! I even asked him for fifty million, and he didn’t even blink. Alright, I can’t talk now; he’s about to transfer the money!"
Lan Qingqing exclaimed urgently, "Fifty million? You can’t ask for that! Are you crazy? Do you really think Zong Zeyu is an idiot? Do you believe he won’t turn around and accuse you of extortion, sending you to jail too? Has he even contacted the police to get Ke Wenjie out?"
Zhang Huizhi felt a cold sweat break out on her forehead. "N-no, he said he would transfer the money first."
Lan Qingqing cursed, "You idiot! You’re such an idiot!"
Zhang Huizhi hung up the phone, feeling terrified. If it hadn’t been for Lan Qingqing’s timely call, she might have ended up at the police station alongside her son and abusive husband.
A secretary approached Zhang Huizhi to ask for her bank card number, but she quickly waved her hand. "No, no, I don’t want the money for now."
Turning to Zong Zeyu, she said, "Can you get my son out first?"
At that moment, Zong Zeyu was already seated at the table. He glanced at Zhang Huizhi, who had suddenly changed demeanor. He wondered who had called her just now that made her so alert.
He thought that as soon as the fifty million arrived in his account, he would report her for extortion immediately. Unfortunately, Zhang Huizhi had dodged that bullet at the last moment.
Zong Zeyu had just been feeling fortunate; not only had Ke Wenjie been taken in, but Zhang Huizhi seemed to be walking right into his trap as well. What a pity that his dream was shattered.
Zong Zeyu spoke up, "So you don’t want the fifty million anymore?"
Zhang Huizhi forced a smile and replied, "I’ve thought it over; let’s discuss the money later. I just want to get my son out first."
Zong Zeyu said coldly, "Your sudden change of heart makes me doubt your credibility. You need to at least tell me why your son was taken in by the police."
As Zhang Huizhi pondered how to fabricate a story, her phone rang—it was Ke Wenjie!
She quickly answered, her voice filled with excitement. "Son! You finally called Mom! What’s going on with you now?"
On the other end of the line, Ke Wenjie sounded weak. "Mom, I’m coming home. Let’s talk when I get back."
After hanging up, Zhang Huizhi hurriedly said goodbye. "My son is coming out! We’ll talk about that day another time!"
With that, Zhang Huizhi slipped out of the office.
Zong Zeyu sighed in disappointment. "What a pity; we were so close."
Not long after Zhang Huizhi left the station, Lan Qingqing entered the main hall.
She learned just two hours ago that Ke Wenjie had been released from the police station, but Ke Wei Qiang was still being held, and it seemed unlikely he would be out anytime soon.
Lan Qingqing settled into her workstation when a hand suddenly rested on her shoulder. A voice that made her stomach churn followed, "Come on, Lan Qingqing, let’s go inspect the construction site."
Lan Qingqing turned her head to see the detestable Wu Youyou! Looking at Wu Youyou's messy hair full of alternative dreadlocks made her stomach churn even more—more intense than morning sickness!
"I refuse," Lan Qingqing said. "Do you think it's appropriate to send a pregnant woman to a construction site?"
Wu Youyou laughed, "Not going, huh? Get this straight, Lan Qingqing: you’re still far from maternity leave! If you don’t cooperate with the company’s tasks, it’s considered laziness and affects our development progress! You used your pregnancy as an excuse last time to refuse me, and if you do it again, I’ll mark you down for absenteeism! If it happens too many times, I’ll have no choice but to fire you. You’re not sick, are you?"
Lan Qingqing stood up, arguing back, "The construction site is exposed to wind and sun! Aren't you afraid something might happen to my baby?"
Wu Youyou shouted even louder than Lan Qingqing, "What happens to your baby is none of my business! Your child is precious? The sun can’t shine on them? I've lived this long and never seen a pregnant woman who can’t move at all! There are two pregnant women in the sales department downstairs! They still run around! How far along are you? Your belly isn’t even showing yet, and here you are chirping away like this—you just want to slack off and get paid for nothing!"
Wu Youyou sneered, "The law says you can’t fire pregnant women, but it doesn’t mean I have to tolerate your laziness and maliciously delay the company’s progress!"
Lan Qingqing screamed at the top of her lungs, "Wu Youyou! Stop putting labels on me!"
Wu Youyou pointed at Lan Qingqing, "If you don’t go, I’ll note it down. You've already had two similar violations before; three strikes and you're out! You’ve delayed the team’s tasks and affected the company’s discipline and efficiency. Plus, under circumstances where you’re deliberately not completing your work and not seeking help from others, that’s a violation!"
Lan Qingqing instinctively glanced back at her coworkers. She hoped to find someone willing to take her place for the site inspection, but everyone quickly lowered their heads. It wasn’t that no one wanted to help; they simply didn’t dare provoke Wu Youyou.
With no other choice, Lan Qingqing had to lower her head and follow Wu Youyou out into the harsh conditions of the construction site.
Wu Youyou strutted away triumphantly. "Stop pretending in front of me! We leave in ten minutes!"
After Wu Youyou left, Lan Qingqing gritted her teeth in frustration. She didn’t know who to turn to for help or how to vent her anger. After thinking for a while, she remembered Hou Yi.
She immediately sent a message to Hou Yi: "I’ve been bullied again. Can you help me?"
