Lan Qingqing followed Wu Youyou to the site, right in the middle of the scorching sun. Despite applying a generous amount of sunscreen in the car, she could still feel the harsh UV rays burning her skin.
Trailing behind Wu Youyou, her frustration grew with each step. She couldn't help but think that the medical aesthetics treatment she had undergone just days ago was wasted! With such intense sunlight, her skin whitening efforts felt completely nullified.
Wu Youyou stopped and turned to Lan Qingqing, saying, "You can stick with President Wang and the others. Just take a tour around the site. I'll wait for you inside."
Lan Qingqing pointed at her own face, asking, "Me? Alone?"
Wu Youyou was too annoyed to engage in further conversation. "What do you mean alone? You think I'm your mother? Just go!"
Lan Qingqing felt silenced by the reprimand. The chaotic environment around them, filled with people and noise, made her realize that if she argued with Wu Youyou here, no one would come to her aid.
Reluctantly, she followed President Wang as they moved up and down the unfinished building. One misstep could send her tumbling down and injuring herself severely!
She thought about slacking off, but her position was such that Wu Youyou could easily see her; there was no chance for her to sneak away.
Pulling out her phone, she wondered when Hou Yi would come to rescue her. He had promised to show up, but it had been ages without any sign of him.
Just then, two cars drove into the site entrance—leading was a sports car, followed by a black business vehicle.
Hou Yi stepped out wearing a light gray tracksuit—gray short-sleeved shirt and matching basketball shorts. He even had on a pair of black sunglasses as he exited the car.
Wu Youyou spotted Hou Yi and for a moment couldn't recall who he was until he removed his sunglasses. The sight of his charmingly rebellious face filled with charisma suddenly reminded her of their previous encounter during an argument with Lan Qingqing at Zong Shi Yan Tuan.
Holding a cup filled with ice coffee, Wu Youyou stood up and headed towards Hou Yi just as Lan Qingqing came rushing towards him like a small rocket from the construction site where she had been inspecting with President Wang.
As the three met, Wu Youyou glanced between Hou Yi and Lan Qingqing. Before she could voice any doubts, Hou Yi gestured towards the black business car behind him. Four bodyguards in black suits emerged from it and positioned themselves behind him.
Wu Youyou paused; those four large figures blocked out the sunlight in front of her. Could it be that they were here to cause trouble?
Hou Yi spoke up, "These four are for you. By this afternoon's end of work, I'll take Lan Qingqing with me. Sounds fair?"
Without waiting for Wu Youyou's response, he grabbed Lan Qingqing's wrist and turned to leave.
Lan Qingqing felt touched by this scene; she hadn't expected Hou Yi to actually come to save her. Just when she thought all hope was lost and was ready to give up, he not only showed up but also put on this impressive display with four strong bodyguards to take over her work duties.
Her heart raced as she felt excitement for the first time because of a man.
Of course, Wu Youyou wouldn't let Hou Yi have his way so easily. She grabbed his arm and he turned his head to look at her hand, reminding her, "Is it really that casual?"
Wu Youyou released him and retorted, "What are you doing? Four big brutes just to swap for Lan Qingqing? Are you saying that your four men are worth less than one of Lan Qingqing's brains?"
Her words were laced with double meaning, taking a jab not only at Hou Yi but also at everyone on his side.
The last time Hou Yi heard such indirect insults was from Tong Le; however, Tong Le was much more tactful than Wu Youyou.
Hou Yi was in high spirits as he pulled Lan Qingqing behind him, facing the enemy head-on while looking at Wu Youyou.
Wu Youyou deliberately provoked, "What is your relationship with Lan Qingqing? She has a husband, you know. She's even carrying a child! Do you enjoy this kind of woman—one who is already taken, with a questionable background, and pregnant?"
Feigning surprise, Wu Youyou continued, "Could it be that the way Lan Qingqing used to cling to Si Li was something you taught her? You certainly don’t look like a good person, and those four tree stumps beside you look even less trustworthy. The way you all come together is quite harmonious, isn’t it?"
