Upon hearing the news that Ke Wei Qiang would not be returning, Zhang Huizhi was not saddened; instead, she felt like celebrating with drums and gongs! Lan Qingqing, on the other hand, was increasingly captivated by the unfolding situation, eager to learn the truth, but Ke Jie denied her that opportunity.
"Go downstairs," Ke Jie commanded Lan Qingqing, turning to face her. "This has nothing to do with you."
Disappointed, Lan Qingqing turned and left for downstairs.
With only Ke Jie and Zhang Huizhi remaining in the house, Zhang Huizhi sat beside Ke Jie and urged him, "Son, I really think you don’t need to be upset about this. Your father is your father; he took the blame for you, and that’s only natural! Why do you feel sorry for him? Besides, he was the mastermind behind it all—he was the one who poisoned and broke down the wall. All of this was his doing and had nothing to do with you! Over the years, he has taken from you and helped you only in that matter involving Tong Le's parents; in every other way, he has been a hindrance! This time, it must have been a slip-up on his part that got him caught so quickly! He’s just a worthless dog who fails more than he succeeds!"
Zhang Huizhi continued, "Think about it—he’s using your money to keep a concubine! How many immoral things has he done? I’ve long wished for his demise!" Her expression was fierce, as if she could chew Ke Wei Qiang into pieces.
Ke Jie sighed repeatedly. Though feeling downcast, he remained clear-headed. His father would certainly take the blame for him this time, but what worried him was whether there would be any repercussions. If a third party knew about this and reported him, he would be completely trapped!
Zhang Huizhi thought for a moment and reassured him, "No way, son! Didn’t you tell me before that you planned this very meticulously? You even considered the surveillance cameras on the street; they only captured Ke Wei Qiang and not you! What are you afraid of? As long as you weren’t filmed and only Ke Wei Qiang was caught on camera, you’re safe! No matter how the police question you, just insist that you don’t know anything—they can’t do anything to you!"
Ke Jie hung his head low, engulfed in endless anxiety. He could never understand how the police discovered this incident or how they connected it to Tong Le's parents' case! When questioned about Tong Le's parents in that small dark room today, he had been left speechless. All he could say was that he had no idea and was completely uninvolved.
At that moment, Ke Jie’s phone rang—it was a call from his landlord.
Steeling himself, Ke Jie answered the phone. The landlord yelled angrily on the other end, "You smashed my property without my consent! I’m going to sue you! You even left radioactive materials in my house? This is murder! What do you want to do with my property? No wonder you rented it so quickly—you came here to kill someone! When the police told me there were radioactive materials in the walls, I was baffled! If it weren’t for their keen investigation, I could have been killed by you!"
Ke Jie held the phone away from his ear; he couldn’t bear to listen to such foul language.
The landlord continued ranting, "I went to the police station today! I even met another landlord named Liu Qing! You did something similar in this house a long time ago! You killed Liu Qing's parents! You really have some nerve! How dare you kill people like this? Damn a bunch of poor fools! Just because you can’t afford a place in downtown doesn’t mean you can ruin our lives! I will definitely hire a lawyer against you! You damaged my property and tried to pin murder charges on me! You will pay!"
Ke Jie became increasingly irritated by these words—especially being called poor—it struck at his pride.
He shouted back into the phone, "You all deserve to die! Is being rich so great? I used to be wealthy too! Stupid fool! The situation with the house has nothing to do with me! Let me say this one last time: it’s not my fault! The police already let me go—they said I had no issues at all! If you keep calling me with trouble, I’ll hire a lawyer against you too! I’ll make sure no one dares rent your house ever again!"
After hanging up the phone, Ke Jie trembled with rage.
Zhang Huizhi quickly patted his back soothingly. "Don’t be angry, son; they’re all fools—worthless scum! They look down on us because they think we’re poorer than them! Our family is much wealthier than they are! If it weren’t for this investment setback, we could have easily bought a large apartment in downtown by now! Don’t let it get to you!"
Ke Jie shook off Zhang Huizhi’s arm in frustration. "Don’t mention investments!" he snapped. "Twenty million just went down the drain like that! Why are you bringing this up now? Do you want me dead?!"
Zhang Huizhi dared not speak further; she shrank back quietly to wait for Ke Jie to calm down.
Ke Jie took deep breaths until he finally began to regain his composure. It dawned on him that he had been taken away by the police because of issues related to Tong Le's parents' apartment.
He had always thought that the house had been vacant for two years, and that the radioactive materials inside had long lost their potency. Yet, less than a year after it changed hands, someone had died there.
Liu Qing's parents had died in that house, and it was certain that Liu Qing suspected something was wrong with the property, which prompted him to alert the police and initiate an investigation.
As for why the police had come to him, he guessed it was because of the renovation work his father had done on the rented house, which had disturbed the neighbors. Alternatively, it could have been a complaint from the renovation crew regarding payment issues.
He hadn’t settled the payments yet because he was out of cash and could only delay.
It seemed that a series of unfortunate events had linked together—one misfortune after another—and combined with reports from the public, this led the police to connect both cases and uncover a flaw in his story.
No, he couldn’t think of a better reason to explain everything.
Could it be Tong Le who reported him? But Tong Le was already preparing to move into her new rented place. Moreover, if she had found out that structural issues caused her parents' deaths, given Tong Le's timid nature, she would have complained and cried about it hundreds of times by now.
Ke Jie instinctively rubbed his fingers together. If this reached Tong Le's ears and she learned that Ke Wei Qiang had hidden drugs within the walls, leading to her parents' demise, then his marriage with Tong Le would be irreparably damaged.
