Ke Wenjie agreed to the request from the woman on the other end of the phone. After hanging up, he quickly received thirty thousand yuan from her. The woman said, "I don’t know what difficulties you’re facing or how much money you need, so I’m giving you thirty thousand as your travel expenses to meet me."
Ke Wenjie replied, "Thank you. Once I finish the transfer procedures for my mother, I’ll come to see you."
The entire day, Ke Wenjie was busy dealing with matters concerning Zhang Huizhi. After the transfer was completed, Zhang Huizhi was settled into a single patient room. Exhausted, Ke Wenjie went alone to a noodle shop downstairs in the hospital to fill his stomach.
While eating, he tried calling Lan Qingqing again. He dialed ten times in a row, but no one answered.
He then called Mo Kai Liang, thinking that since Zhang Huizhi needed care in the hospital and he had to focus on making money, he couldn’t always be at the hospital. He needed Mo Kai Liang to come and keep her company.
The call connected, and Ke Wenjie immediately began to vent his frustration. "Where the hell have you been? Where’s Lan Qingqing? Did she take you away? She hasn’t answered my calls all day and even sold the house without telling me! Where is she?"
On the other end of the line, Mo Kai Liang remained silent. He had intended to confront Ke Wenjie and didn’t want to be associated with him any longer. After all, there was no future in sticking with him. Now that Ke Wenjie had fallen from grace, Mo Kai Liang thought it better to rely on his own luck and try his hand at gambling.
Just as Mo Kai Liang was about to speak up, Ke Wenjie deflated. "Forget it; I guess you don’t know where that scheming woman is either. Just come to the hospital and find me. My mother is sick, and we still can’t determine the cause. I need you to stay with her while I handle other matters."
Upon hearing that Zhang Huizhi was ill, Mo Kai Liang felt a surge of satisfaction; his repeated drugging of her had finally yielded results.
He suddenly lost interest in confronting Ke Wenjie. If Zhang Huizhi was in the hospital and he could keep her company, perhaps he could take things further and send her straight to her grave—then he would win Lan Qingqing’s favor.
At that moment, Mo Kai Liang was with Lan Qingqing. As soon as she heard that Zhang Huizhi was sick, she perked up immediately. She gestured excitedly with her hands and mouthed for Mo Kai Liang to go take care of Zhang Huizhi at the hospital.
Mo Kai Liang responded into the phone, "Alright, brother. Send me the address; I’m heading there now."
After hanging up, Mo Kai Liang and Lan Qingqing had already moved into a new place—a larger apartment with a better view that Lan Qingqing had personally chosen.
She handed Mo Kai Liang a key to their new home and instructed him, "If Ke Wenjie asks about me, just act like you don’t know anything. Once you’ve dealt with Zhang Huizhi completely, you can move in here with me. Remember, we’re in this together; don’t let Ke Wenjie’s words sway you. He’s alone now and has no way back."
Mo Kai Liang nodded vigorously. "I understand; I’ll take care of Zhang Huizhi quickly so that you’ll be happy."
Lan Qingqing leaned in and gave him a kiss on the lips with a sweet smile. "I knew you were the best for me."
Mo Kai Liang blushed; after that kiss, he would do anything for Lan Qingqing!
At the hospital.
By the time Mo Kai Liang arrived at the hospital, it was already dusk and darkness was settling in.
Ke Wenjie had grown impatient waiting inside until Mo Kai Liang finally appeared at the door of the patient room. He hurriedly stood up and complained, "Why did it take you so long? I have an appointment here!"
Mo Kai Liang replied quietly, "Brother, I was out looking for a job! I went pretty far trying to find something to help out at home."
Ke Wenjie went to the restroom and tidied himself up in front of the mirror. When he stepped out again, he looked much more refreshed than before.
He said, "My mother is sick; you'll take care of her during this time. Don’t worry about money; I’ll figure it out."
Ke Wenjie turned to leave but suddenly remembered something. "By the way, has Lan Qingqing been in touch with you?"
Mo Kai Liang shook his head. "No, what's wrong with Lan Qingqing?"
Ke Wenjie couldn't be bothered to explain. "Let her be. By the way, you can't stay in the house where you used to live anymore. After my mom falls asleep tonight, go over to the apartment and pack your things. Bring everything to the hospital."
Mo Kai Liang nodded. "Got it, brother. Who are you going to see now?"
Without answering, Ke Wenjie turned and left the hospital room.
Mo Kai Liang looked at Zhang Huizhi, who was groaning on the bed, appearing as if she were on the brink of death. He leaned closer to her and said, "Aunt, if you're feeling uncomfortable, just let me know. I'll think of something in the next couple of days and find a place to make you some soup."
Zhang Huizhi murmured, "Where's that liar Lan Qingqing? She promised me two hundred thousand but ended up selling the house! Now we have nothing left, absolutely nothing."
She wiped her tears away, feeling pain all over her body. Even with painkillers, she couldn't suppress the agony.
