"Go ahead and be single for the rest of your lives, you two! If you don't hurry up and marry Tong Le and Wen, you'll just be staring at each other, making do!"
Zong Zeyu and Zong Jin exchanged glances, both showing expressions of disdain before heading upstairs to wash up and rest.
At that moment, Tong Le was in the office preparing for a meeting. She needed to finalize the contract with the distillery as soon as possible to move forward with the next steps.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the office door, and in walked Jin Zi Meng, holding a thermos.
"Tong Le Jie," she said cheerfully, "I brought you some Corn Rib Soup that my mom made early this morning. You came to work so early; you must not have eaten yet, right?"
Tong Le was a bit surprised. "Why are you here so early too?"
Jin Zi Meng smiled. "I come in early every day. My mom wakes up early and urges me to leave for work. Otherwise, I practice dance in the conference room since we have that performance coming up for Zong Group."
Tong Le nodded. "Oh right, I've already signed you up for it. When we rehearse later, I'll have Jiang Zhichao take you to the venue."
"Go ahead and drink the soup," Tong Le said. "I've already eaten this morning."
Jin Zi Meng insisted on placing the thermos on the table, bowing slightly. "Just eat it! My mom made two portions specially for you. I've got to go now!"
With that, Jin Zi Meng left the office.
Tong Le looked at the thermos on the table. Perhaps influenced by her previous experience with Lan Qingqing, she now associated rib soup with the street vendor's version that had been so unappetizing. The memory left her hesitant to accept food from others.
However, she sensed that Jin Zi Meng was genuinely trying to please her. With a mother like Jin Feng who was adept at reading situations, it would be difficult for Jin Zi Meng not to develop properly.
Tong Le pondered; she wanted to extract information from Jin Feng regarding the details of the Ke Wei Qiang drug case. She always felt that Jin Feng must know something. If she did know anything at all, it might help put Ke Wenjie, the real criminal, behind bars.
But she understood that she couldn't rush this matter. As long as Ke Wenjie hadn't completely fallen from grace, someone as meticulous as Jin Feng would never speak easily.
Tong Le decided to wait patiently; she had all the time in the world.
Just then, her phone buzzed with WeChat messages—two in a row from Zong Zeyu and Zong Jin.
Zong Zeyu wrote: "Wife, why aren't you replying to my messages? Did you forget that you just confessed to me yesterday? Where's our couple's sweetness? At least give me a good morning kiss, okay?"
Tong Le quickly replied: "I'm busy making money to marry you! Stop being so clingy."
Zong Zeyu responded: "Marry me? Hmm?"
Tong Le shot back: "Shut up then, muah."
Zong Zeyu replied: "Alright, satisfied—I'll keep quiet now."
Tong Le exited her chat with Zong Zeyu and opened the conversation with Zong Jin. A message that raised some concern appeared: "Tong Le, can you get in touch with Wu Youyou? She’s gone off the radar again and we can’t reach her."
Tong Le recalled last night when Wu Youyou abruptly left the dinner table, claiming she needed some fresh air, and then she didn’t return for the entire evening. The last time Wu Youyou went missing, she had gone to an amusement park; this time, it was unclear where she might be.
Instinctively, Tong Le felt that Wu Youyou might be acting out again, hiding away in a secluded spot. She replied, "I’ll call her now and see if I can reach her. Last time she went to the amusement park; you might want to check there."
After sending the message, Tong Le called Wu Youyou several times, but there was no answer; the phone was turned off. She continued to send messages without receiving any replies.
A sense of unease began to creep in. Even if Wu Youyou was prone to emotional outbursts, she wouldn’t usually ignore messages for such a long time; this wasn’t typical behavior for her.
Tong Le then called Zong Jin. When he answered, she suggested, "Maybe we should report it to the police. In the past, when Wu Youyou went missing, she would respond to my messages, but this time feels different."
Zong Jin agreed, "Alright, thank you for your help, Tong Le."
After hanging up, Tong Le hurriedly returned to her work. She had a meeting with a contact at the site in half an hour and planned to search for Wu Youyou afterward.
Meanwhile, at the Zong Family Mansion, Zong Jin sat in the dining room contemplating Tong Le’s words and hesitating over whether to call the police. After all, Wu Youyou was an adult; even if she had been missing for less than an hour, she often disappeared without notice.
He worried about making a false report and causing unnecessary panic.
Just then, Wen Cuizhi came downstairs. She glanced at the welcome mat by the front door and remarked, "Wu Youyou didn’t come back last night?"
Zong Jin replied, "She isn’t answering her phone. I’m starting to worry that something might have happened."
Wen Cuizhi checked the time and guessed that Wu Youyou had probably gone out drinking with friends again; she always seemed to find a reason to go out at night.
At that moment, Zong Jin’s phone rang with a peculiar number that made him uneasy.
When he answered the call, just a few minutes later his face turned pale.
After hanging up, Zong Jin sprang to his feet without even changing his clothes and rushed toward the front door.
Wen Cuizhi shouted after him, "What are you doing?!"
Zong Jin responded urgently, "Something’s happened to Wu Youyou! It was a call from the police!"
