In the night, Ke Jie returned home with bags in hand, determined to fill the refrigerator with all kinds of fruits and vegetables. He aimed to please Ying Rong Xiao, hoping to climb higher by standing on her shoulders in the future.
Humming a tune, he changed into his loungewear and entered the kitchen to wash the vegetables. Feeling refreshed and light, he recalled his day spent shopping for ingredients at the supermarket. Later, he drove his Rolls Royce with Ge Miao to a hotel room. He couldn't help but reflect on how easily women seemed to be deceived these days; they didn't even question whether the car was truly his. They simply assumed he was wealthy and fantasized that a rich man would be interested in a sales clerk selling perfume.
This thought made him chuckle; without any effort, he had managed to sleep with Ge Miao. He vividly remembered how she had taken a day off just to accompany him that afternoon, putting in so much effort to please him. It seemed that in Ge Miao's mind, the only way to win his heart was by making him comfortable.
He found such women to be rather cheap; just a few hints from him, and they would fall right into his trap. There was no challenge in it, and he felt they weren't worth his time—he wouldn't bother sleeping with them again.
As he played music in the kitchen while washing vegetables, he heard a sound at the front door—Ying Rong Xiao had returned. Wearing an apron, Ke Jie stepped out of the kitchen and smiled, "You can rest first. I learned a new dish online today; I'll make it for you."
Ying Rong Xiao replied lazily, "Just make something simple. I already ate at Wan Zhang's place; that old man insisted on having hot pot today, and now I smell like it. It's so annoying—I need a shower."
Twenty minutes later, Ying Rong Xiao emerged from the bathroom, holding her phone as she entered the kitchen where Ke Jie was busy frying vegetables, the smell of oil filling the air.
Ke Jie reminded her, "You just took a shower; you shouldn't come in here or you'll smell like oil again. Don't you dislike that smell?"
Ying Rong Xiao wrapped her arms around Ke Jie from behind. Although she initially had some small grievances, every time Ke Jie showed tenderness, her irritation faded away.
Leaning her face against his back, she softly said, "Let's go for a check-up at Tian Hospital. I've already made an appointment for you; it's important to get a full body check-up."
Ke Jie frowned slightly in confusion. "Why are you suddenly thinking about my health?"
Ying Rong Xiao moved around to stand beside him as he plated the hot dishes and brought them to the table. He pressed down on her shoulder as he sat down and poured her half a glass of red wine.
"Try my cooking," he said eagerly.
Ying Rong Xiao leaned closer to him, gazing into his eyes. At that moment, she wanted to scold him for sneaking out with a sales clerk and sleeping with her, but as the words formed on her lips, she reconsidered—it wasn't such a big deal after all.
What truly concerned her was Ke Jie's health; she feared he might contract something serious that would be difficult to handle.
Raising her glass of wine, she reminded him, "You know what I worry about most? It's your health. You must stay clean so I can feel at ease."
Ke Jie furrowed his brow slightly; it seemed he understood the underlying message in her words but dared not admit it.
"Women these days are so easily deceived," Ying Rong Xiao remarked bluntly. "They think that if a man drives a luxury car and sleeps with them, they have grasped the secret to wealth and can manipulate men to achieve a leap in social status. It's quite laughable, isn't it?"
With a hint of sarcasm, Ying Rong Xiao continued, "There are truly many fools in this world, flocking to wealthy individuals one after another, willingly jumping into pits and becoming fuel for the rich. Don’t you think they are incredibly foolish?"
Ke Jie felt a wave of anxiety wash over him. He knew Ying Rong Xiao's temperament; she must have found out about his affair with Ge Miao, which was why she spoke this way. To survive in Ying Rong Xiao's presence, he had to be sensible and understand the rules. He needed to admit his mistake and apologize immediately; otherwise, he would face dire consequences.
"I'm sorry, I—" Ke Jie began hurriedly.
Ying Rong Xiao interrupted him while sipping her drink. "You don’t need to apologize to me. I didn’t specifically track you down; it’s just that the car has a GPS. After all, it’s an expensive vehicle, so having a tracking system is normal. When I saw it heading to a hotel, I had someone check on you. But really, if you were feeling restless, why didn’t you come to me? Why go for someone like that? Is she better than me? Or do you think the thrill of cheating is exciting?"
Ke Jie felt utterly humiliated. He wanted to explain himself, but it was merely a physical matter; saying anything more in front of Ying Rong Xiao would only make him look foolish.
"You don’t need to blame yourself," Ying Rong Xiao said. "I don’t care about these things. From now on, this kind of thing cannot happen again. I've told you before; I care deeply about your health. If you ruin your body, how can you have children with me? How can you stay by my side? Don’t you agree?"
Ke Jie nodded. "I won’t do it again."
Ying Rong Xiao picked up her chopsticks and savored Ke Jie’s cooking, praising him repeatedly. "This tastes great! I like this flavor. By the way, about that project I mentioned last time—I want you to start working on it in the next few days. You shouldn’t waste your time on trivial matters like cooking and housework. I’ll help you start a new company."
Ke Jie was thrilled. "Really? You’ll help me start a company?"
"Yes," Ying Rong Xiao replied. "But I have one request: stay by my side and behave yourself. If you're really lonely and want to find other women, it has to be through me."
This was the first time Ke Jie had heard such words, but coming from Ying Rong Xiao, it wasn’t surprising. His choice was correct; by staying close to Ying Rong Xiao, there would surely come a day when he could turn things around!
Ying Rong Xiao added, "You need to buy a well-fitting suit; I'm tired of what’s in your wardrobe already. When we attend the Zong Group meeting, we can't afford to lose face."
