Zong Jin drove Dao Wen home, and throughout the journey, neither of them spoke a word. Zong Jin was naturally quiet and even less adept at handling emotional relationships. When faced with such situations, he often found himself at a loss for words.
Dao Wen gazed out the window, her phone vibrating incessantly in her hand, all calls from Zhou Zishuo. She didn’t answer any of them. Finally, Zong Jin broke the silence. “Aren’t you going to answer the phone?”
She shook her head. “I just told him on WeChat that Zhou Feng might still be alive. He’s been calling me non-stop since then. There’s really nothing more to say about it; we need to see him in person to understand the situation.”
Perhaps it was Zong Jin’s overthinking, but he sensed a double meaning in Dao Wen’s words. He felt she might be hinting at whether they should continue their relationship, suggesting that the decision would depend on meeting Zhou Feng first. Although he had thought the same during the day, a glimmer of hope lingered within him, wishing that Dao Wen would decisively say she would choose him.
As they entered the neighborhood, they both got out of the car. Dao Wen walked straight toward the building entrance while Zong Jin paused and spoke up, “Then I’ll head back. Once you’re inside, send me a message on WeChat.”
Dao Wen turned back, “Aren’t you staying here? Going to Zong Family Mansion?” After a moment's thought, she added, “Will you come back here again?”
Zong Jin looked up at the building above. He did want to stay; he remembered Zong Zeyu’s advice to seize opportunities. Yet at that moment, he hesitated. His gaze softened as he walked toward Dao Wen and wrapped his arms around her. He whispered warmly, “I’ll wait for you to make your decision. Until then, you are free.”
He held her tightly for a few seconds longer, feeling that this moment of greed was enough to fill the void in his heart. Dao Wen was like a rose he had planted in his heart; how could he bear to let this rose suffer because of him? Even if one day someone else picked it, he would have to accept it with pain.
Zong Jin released her and said goodbye before turning to drive away. Dao Wen stood there, her emotions tangled and transformed.
At that moment, Zhou Zishuo rushed down the stairs and burst through the entrance. “Sister! I saw you enter the neighborhood from upstairs! Why didn’t you answer my calls? Is Brother really alive?”
Dao Wen turned to see the exuberant Zhou Zishuo, whose face was lit up with uncontainable joy. “Let’s go find him! Let’s bring him back!”
Initially reluctant to engage further, Dao Wen suddenly felt an overwhelming surge of anger that she could no longer suppress. She unleashed all her pent-up emotions onto Zhou Zishuo. “What do you want to find him for? How are you going to bring him back? He disappeared for so many years without a single call! He made everyone think he was dead—completely dead! And now he’s living carefree while we’re left behind! You want to bring him back? Are you going to bring his wife and kids along too? What about me? Should I just step aside for them? Do I need to help take care of their kids?”
As she finished speaking, all the grievances and misunderstandings that had been bottled up inside her erupted like flames from an explosion. She broke down completely; all her earlier restraint and understanding were crushed under the weight of this new revelation.
She even considered whether Zhou Feng had some unspeakable reason for his disappearance—perhaps a secret mission that forced him to lie about his death? But what kind of special mission required marrying abroad and even having children?
Dao Wen’s emotional collapse shattered any lingering feelings of grievance she had; she wasn’t going to shed a single tear now—she only wanted to go crazy and demand an explanation from Zhou Feng.
Suddenly, she hurled her phone against the concrete ground with all her might. That wasn’t enough; she stomped on it several times in a frenzy. In that moment, she transformed from a composed woman into someone resembling a madwoman.
Zhou Zishuo was taken aback; he had never seen Dao Wen like this before. He rushed forward to stop her, trying to reason with her. “Sister! Calm down! How could my brother possibly be married with kids outside? Don’t think such wild thoughts!”
Dao Wen simply wouldn’t listen to advice. Instinctively, she shook off the hand that was holding her, and her palm landed squarely on Zhou Zishuo’s face, delivering a sharp slap that made his head buzz.
At the Zong Family Mansion, Zong Jin walked through the door, looking utterly dispirited. Wu Youyou came down the stairs, clutching a stuffed toy. She had heard the latest gossip about Dao Wen and Zhou Feng long before.
Although she couldn’t attend the Zong Group’s Annual Meeting during the day, she had spent her time at home chatting on her phone with friends at the venue and also with Hou Yi. The reason she missed the meeting was that Wen Cuizhi wouldn’t allow her to go; she was afraid Wu Youyou would cause trouble, so she insisted on keeping her at home.
Wu Youyou had been obedient and stayed home, initially feeling quite frustrated. However, upon learning that Dao Wen's old flame was still alive, her spirits lifted instantly, and she felt much better.
Holding back a laugh, Wu Youyou sidled up to Zong Jin and asked, “Are you hungry? Want to grab a late-night snack together? It’s much cozier at home than in that little place outside.”
Zong Jin glanced at Wu Youyou and asked with concern, “Are you feeling any better now?”
Wu Youyou nodded. “Yeah, I’m doing alright. The police still haven’t made any moves, but I’m fine otherwise. I played games all day and found a few companions who cheered me up.”
Barefoot, Wu Youyou moved in front of Zong Jin and said, “Can you take me out for a walk? I’d like some company.”
Noticing her bare feet, Zong Jin turned to the shoe cabinet and retrieved a pair of slippers. He bent down and placed them by Wu Youyou’s feet. “Put these on so you don’t catch a chill.”
Feeling satisfied, Wu Youyou thought that the familiar Zong Jin from her past had returned. Just hours ago, she had been upset over not receiving his affection; she even considered forcing Hou Yi to marry her just to prove that someone cared for her and that she was worthy of love.
But now it seemed unnecessary. As long as Dao Wen returned to Zhou Feng’s side, Zong Jin would still belong solely to her.
