Wu Youyou spoke with righteous indignation, "You should definitely give it to me! A bunch of bastards manufacturing illegal goods! Useless scum! They’ve harmed so many people! Are you going to protect them and shield them? Isn’t that just aiding and abetting their evil?"
Hou Yi looked at Wu Youyou as if she were a fool. "What? In your heart, am I some kind of great benefactor or savior? You've known me for quite some time now. Is my image in your mind really that noble? I've been muddling through life, and yet you categorize me among the good? I can’t help but feel like I’m failing at life."
He shook his head helplessly, genuinely thinking that Wu Youyou was a bit simple-minded. How could such a foolish woman have once manipulated Lan Qingqing to such an extent? For a moment, he couldn't tell who was smarter and who was more foolish.
Wu Youyou circled around to face Hou Yi again, urging him, "If you give me the clues, I will definitely report it to the police!"
Hou Yi finished his sandwich in a few bites and then stepped out onto the balcony, lighting a cigarette.
Wu Youyou closely followed him.
She racked her brain, trying to figure out how she could get him to give her the clues.
Hou Yi smoked slowly, deliberately dragging out Wu Youyou's impatience. As one cigarette burned down, he turned to her and said, "I can't give you the evidence. All I can tell you is that the person who drugged you is Lan Qingqing. Just consider me a villain; this evidence chain involves multiple forces, including the police. If you, this headstrong girl, blow the whistle on it, many innocent people will die because of it. That’s a price you can’t afford."
Wu Youyou frowned. "Is it really that terrifying?"
Hou Yi gazed out at the view from the balcony. "If you escalate this matter, do you believe that Lan Qingqing will end up benefiting while everyone else fights? Once things escalate completely, the police won't be focused on solving your case anymore; they'll be investigating the entire chain of illegal goods. At that point, those involved will throw out a couple of scapegoats for self-preservation, and everything will return to square one. And you, as the spark that ignited this whole situation, will become a target for all parties involved. By then, you won’t even know how you met your end. Meanwhile, she—Lan Qingqing—will continue to live freely."
Wu Youyou felt a chill run down her spine. If what Hou Yi said were true and Lan Qingqing lived freely while she—Wu Youyou—met a tragic end, then her investigation would be meaningless!
She stood there in a daze.
Hou Yi turned around, leaning against the balcony railing. "What are you still doing standing there? Now that you know Lan Qingqing is the culprit, why not take revenge yourself? Relying on the police will only get you a result that's legally unsatisfying."
Wu Youyou lifted her head, her eyes fierce. "I won’t let Lan Qingqing off! The pain I’ve suffered must be repaid to her a thousandfold!"
Hou Yi shrugged. "Slowly then; I won’t see you off."
Wu Youyou strode away decisively. Persuaded by Hou Yi's words that the law wouldn’t give her what she wanted, she resolved to rely on her own abilities to take revenge on Lan Qingqing!
Just as she left, Hou Yi's right-hand man Sun Hu rushed into the room.
Hou Yi sat back down on the sofa and opened his phone, lowering his head to play a game.
Sun Hu grabbed a wine glass from the coffee table without caring whether someone had used it before and poured himself more than half a glass of red wine as if he hadn’t had anything to drink in three days. He gulped it down quickly and even let out a loud belch.
With a hint of alcohol on his breath, Sun Hu exclaimed, "Boss! We found it! We finally found it!"
Hou Yi couldn’t be bothered to respond; after all, Sun Hu’s daily reports were usually trivial matters about eating and other mundane things.
"Brother!" Sun Hu exclaimed again, "Are you even listening to me? I found something!"
Hou Yi, growing impatient, lifted his head. "What the hell are you talking about? Just say it!"
Sun Hu spoke nervously, "I found the driver of the truck that hit your parents! This bastard has been hiding out in the countryside! Ever since the accident, he disappeared! But luckily, you've been investigating this all along. Just three days ago, that at-fault driver showed up! He was hospitalized due to a sudden brain hemorrhage! After I tracked down this old driver, I discovered he has a son. However, this son isn't listed on his household registration. Apparently, the old man had him when he was young but never got married, which is why we couldn't find out he had family!"
As Sun Hu continued, his excitement grew. "You won't believe it! Since that accident, the old man's son has bought a house and a car in the city and even had a child! Meanwhile, this old driver has been hiding in a remote village. If it weren't for the sudden brain hemorrhage, he could have stayed hidden in those mountains for the rest of his life!"
At that moment, Hou Yi's mobile game had entered idle mode. His hands froze as a knot in his heart began to unravel on this otherwise ordinary morning.
Hou Yi turned his head to look at Sun Hu. Though there were turbulent waves in his eyes, he remained calm. "Did you check where his son's money for buying a house came from?"
Sun Hu took a deep breath. "I did check, and I found out that the money didn't go directly into his son's account but was transferred to his daughter-in-law's account. The sender was Zong Caishan."
Hou Yi raised an eyebrow. "Zong Caishan? The surname is Zong?"
