Hou Yi suddenly remembered that they were in a funeral home, a place for storing ashes after cremating bodies. It felt a bit presumptuous to be there. Embarrassed, he stepped aside and pretended he hadn’t said anything.
Meanwhile, at a private hospital, Lan Qingqing was being discharged, with Mo Kai Liang following closely behind, cradling the Two-Headed Monster Baby in his arms. Li had already been placed in the business vehicle, and Lan Qingqing turned back repeatedly, wishing she could kill this monstrous baby with her glare.
Half an hour earlier, Lan Qingqing had been arguing with the hospital staff. She wanted to leave the monster baby at the hospital; she didn’t want to wake up every day to see this two-headed creature, nor did she want to breastfeed it! But the hospital refused her request. Even though she was willing to pay a hefty treatment fee, they wouldn’t accept it, clearly opposing her.
Lan Qingqing was seething with anger as she got into the car. The driver started the engine while Mo Kai Liang sat beside her with the baby. He was gently soothing the child; despite being a two-headed monster, the baby still had normal needs.
Lan Qingqing couldn’t understand how he could be so calm. Didn’t he find it disgusting? Looking at this creature, didn’t he feel any discomfort? The hospital’s refusal was clearly because they feared they would abandon the child! Why were they so sneaky? She had offered money! But they just wouldn’t agree!
As she pondered angrily, Lan Qingqing thought about whether it was legal for the hospital to refuse a sick baby. Shouldn’t she sue them?
Mo Kai Liang didn’t think taking care of a baby was difficult; he had already made plans for it. The child’s condition was stable, albeit different from that of a normal baby. He had even found a nanny and arranged housing. The baby would live with the nanny most of the time; if she didn’t want to breastfeed, then so be it. As for the treatment plan, he would look for larger hospitals; he had already contacted several that were very interested in treating the child and promised to keep everything confidential.
The more Lan Qingqing thought about it, the more frustrated she became. They were interested in nothing but using this child as a subject for research! Besides, why should she be responsible for this child? This was Ke Wenjie’s child! Why should he push all responsibility onto her? Why should she bear everything alone?
Fuming with anger, her body reacted; cold sweat broke out on her back, and her hands trembled. No, she had to confront him! Either he gave her twenty million in support and compensation for emotional distress or he could take care of the child himself!
Mo Kai Liang didn’t dare to advise her while she was angry; any attempt to persuade her would only infuriate her more, and he would end up suffering for it. He also felt that Ke Wenjie’s actions were wrong, but at this point, expecting him to take responsibility for the child seemed like a fantasy.
“Take me to my company first,” Lan Qingqing said. “I just started at this new company and took leave right after completing my paperwork for cosmetic surgery. Now I need maternity leave again; they won’t be happy about that. I need to go back and have a good talk with my boss and bring some gifts.”
Sighing deeply, she continued, “Our company’s boss is Winston—the one who was killed recently. I used to have connections with him through Hou Yi, so taking leave wasn’t an issue before. But now that Winston is dead and I don’t even know who the new leader is, they will definitely make things difficult for me since I’ve been absent for so long.”
“Why don’t you just quit? I can support you,” Mo Kai Liang suggested.
Lan Qingqing disagreed vehemently. “I’m counting on this company for my insurance benefits! Why should I quit? Besides, women can’t just sit at home! This company offers great pay and working conditions! Women who stay at home too long get stale and gain weight; what’s the point of living without social interaction?”
She took out a small mirror and admired her newly enhanced face. “Look how beautiful I am now! If I don’t go out and show myself off, wouldn’t that be a waste of my surgery?”
She held her face up close to Mo Kai Liang’s. “Don’t you think it looks great?”
He could only nod in agreement, though deep down he didn’t think this version of Lan Qingqing was beautiful at all. He preferred the old Lan Qingqing—she had undergone minor enhancements but still retained a charm that appealed to him as an ordinary woman would.
Now, however, Lan Qingqing had completely changed; she looked like a different person from the one on her ID card. She even needed to get a new ID because facial recognition technology couldn’t recognize her anymore.
But no matter what happened, he loved her. His love for her had taken root from the very beginning; loving her felt as natural as loving himself. They were both unfortunate souls just trying to live better lives and gain more recognition.
