Lan Qingqing suddenly felt uncomfortable all over, though she couldn't tell if it was just in her head. Despite her discomfort, she refused to go to the hospital; she was determined to confront Du Guangwei and Hua Rongxiao.
Lan Qingqing reported the incident to the police and followed them to Du Guangwei's Cosmetic Surgery Institution. During this process, Mo Kai Liang chose to avoid involvement due to his unique circumstances; he was afraid of getting caught up in the investigation.
When Lan Qingqing arrived at the Cosmetic Surgery Institution with the police, she found that the surgical ward had already been dismantled, leaving no trace behind. Even the cement walls and floors had been smashed and removed, and all construction debris had been cleared away. There were no surveillance cameras or any evidence left; the institution had not officially opened for business yet, so many facilities were incomplete.
The police took statements from everyone present, but the medical staff could only say they didn’t know anything. Du Guangwei denied all accusations, claiming he was being wronged and that Lan Qingqing was slandering him.
Desperate for evidence, Lan Qingqing tried to recall the medical team that had operated on her, but she found herself unable to remember anything about them. The doctors who performed her surgery had been brought in from elsewhere, with different specialists handling different parts of her procedure. She had trusted the institution's word that these doctors were qualified, but now she couldn’t even remember their faces or names. Some of them hadn’t even spoken to her; after receiving anesthesia, she had woken up to a blank white ceiling.
When the police asked if she had any other evidence, Lan Qingqing could only shake her head in despair; she felt utterly helpless.
At that moment, Du Guangwei struck back with a devastating counterattack. He deliberately muddied the waters and misled the police investigation by claiming that Lan Qingqing was trying to extort money from him. He asserted that all cosmetic procedures performed on her were free of charge and that she had signed a waiver beforehand. Furthermore, he claimed that Lan Qingqing had failed to fulfill her promotional obligations after the surgery, giving the company grounds to demand compensation from her.
The more he spoke, the more agitated he became. He accused Lan Qingqing of being greedy and suggested that she might have even sold her kidney just to fund her cosmetic surgery. He painted her as someone who would stop at nothing for beauty, labeling her a psychological deviant.
Du Guangwei continued with various speculations, suggesting that Lan Qingqing must have visited many cosmetic surgery institutions—not just his—and even insinuated that she might have gone to a private hospital to give birth and possibly had a kidney removed in collusion with other hospitals. He claimed that Lan Qingqing was trying to take advantage of their institution before it officially opened.
He made sure his words reached Lan Qingqing’s ears, infuriating her further. With insufficient evidence at hand, the police could only promise to investigate as best they could while urging Lan Qingqing to gather proof.
As Du Guangwei and Lan Qingqing exited the police station one after another, she trembled with rage. His driver was waiting by the roadside as Du Guangwei strutted away triumphantly. Turning back to look at the disheveled Lan Qingqing, he taunted her, saying that with a face like hers, even if she were to promote their institution, they wouldn’t agree—her lack of beauty made her unsuitable as a spokesperson.
Du Guangwei sneered at her: "You really aren't beautiful at all! Even if you underwent surgery from head to toe, it wouldn't make a difference! Do you know why? Because your foundation is simply too poor! Do you really think cosmetic procedures can save you? Those beautiful women were already pretty before their surgeries! They were merely enhancing what they already had! Unlike you, who hopes for unrealistic miracles!"
With a mocking laugh, he added that she should start thinking about how to make money because fixing her face would cost a fortune.
As he turned towards his car, Lan Qingqing rushed forward in a futile attempt to confront him one last time. But exhaustion overwhelmed her; she felt on the verge of collapse.
Watching Du Guangwei’s figure disappear from sight, Lan Qingqing slumped down onto the ground and pulled out her phone to call Mo Kai Liang.
The call connected, and she struggled to speak. "Come pick me up; I need to find Hua Rongxiao."
