Mo Kai Liang hunched his back, a bitter smile on his face. Yes, any one of these burdens could be enough to kill me a thousand times over. But why? I don’t understand why some people can have everything, while we, like ants, can’t even grasp the simplest happiness no matter how hard we try. Do I really have to resort to killing, harming others, and fighting for my place in this world? Why?
Mo Kai Liang looked at Tong Le. “Can you give me an answer?”
Tong Le spoke up, “Do you believe in cause and effect?”
Mo Kai Liang shook his head and then nodded. He believed that the evil he had done in the past had brought him retribution. Yet he didn’t understand what caused his suffering; what kind of cause led to such an outcome?
Tong Le continued, “I believe in the cycle of life. We don’t just live this one life. When my parents were bedridden and I learned the true nature of Ke Wenjie, I too felt the same confusion as you. Why?”
Tong Le smiled bitterly. “That time was painful—excruciatingly painful. It was so bad that even eating candy didn’t taste sweet. I once thought about jumping off a building because I couldn’t make sense of it all. But when I stood at the top of that building, looking out at the view from the highest point, I saw distant mountains with temples and statues on them. I thought to myself that such places must gather many people's hopes and confessions. There are always those who suffer more than I do, and there are always those who seek answers in such places, so I went there too. I offered incense and drew lots to seek guidance, but none of it yielded answers. Eventually, I met a Little Master and asked him why I had to endure such pain. He asked me if I believed in cause and effect.”
Mo Kai Liang interjected, “What did you say?”
Tong Le smiled slightly. “I gave him the same answer as you.”
Mo Kai Liang felt anxious. “And what did the Little Master say in response?”
Tong Le replied, “The Little Master said that if you don’t believe in cause and effect, no amount of explanation will matter. But if you do believe in it, then you should try it for yourself—test whether this so-called theory of cause and effect truly exists or is merely a comfort for the heart.”
Under Mo Kai Liang's furrowed brow, his gaze gradually became clearer; the anxiety and resentment faded away as if he began to understand.
Tong Le continued, “I tried it. For three hours, I sought revenge against Ke Wenjie, and indeed he faced retribution. So this theory of cause and effect became real for me. As for our backgrounds—yours or mine—life doesn’t end with this one existence; there are causes from past lives and effects in future ones. Because I believe in cause and effect, I have faith; thus, people learn to have reverence and refrain from doing evil to avoid evil outcomes—sow good causes to reap good results.”
After this heartfelt exchange, Mo Kai Liang slumped onto the sofa.
Tong Le glanced toward Lan Qingqing’s bedroom door before turning back to Mo Kai Liang. “The police are downstairs. I just told them that if you come down voluntarily, it counts as your confession. If you confess, I’ll take care of everything regarding Lan Qingqing’s situation; I'll help with the child’s medical treatment and handle any financial matters related to it.”
After a brief silence, Tong Le noticed that Mo Kai Liang was no longer struggling.
Slowly, Mo Kai Liang stood up and put on his coat with deliberate care. He appeared composed as he walked toward the door, changing into the leather shoes he had polished last night. Turning to Tong Le, he said, “I made some food for Lan Qingqing. If she wakes up soon, could you please heat it up for her? The baby’s formula is ready too; sorry for the trouble.”
