When Hou Yi's car arrived at the villa entrance, Lan Qingqing had already obtained the key and released Ke Jie. As soon as Lan Qingqing and Ke Jie dashed out of the villa, they climbed into Hou Yi's business vehicle, one after the other. Just before getting in, Ke Jie spat fiercely at the villa door, cursing under his breath.
As the car hit the road, Ke Jie felt a wave of relief wash over him. He quickly turned to the driver, Xiang Dai, and said, "Master, take us to the police station!" Turning back, he demanded from Lan Qingqing, "Give me that skull bracelet. When we get to the police station, I’ll explain everything to the officers."
Lan Qingqing hid her right hand behind her back; she had no intention of returning the bracelet. Just then, the car came to a sudden stop. Someone opened the door from outside—it was Hou Yi.
Hou Yi got in and forcefully pulled Ke Jie out of the car. Ke Jie barely had time to react before he was shoved into another vehicle. Hou Yi walked back to Lan Qingqing’s car and tossed her a bag of bread and a bottle of milk. "Eat something to fill your stomach; this time you’re off the hook. I’ll take Ke Jie with me. Let’s pretend today never happened—you didn’t see me, and I didn’t see you. As for everything else, you can figure it out yourself; we have nothing to do with each other."
He turned to the driver and instructed, "Take her back to the city." Before Lan Qingqing could say anything, Hou Yi closed the door behind him, leaving her feeling empty inside.
As the car resumed its journey, Lan Qingqing leaned against the window, watching Hou Yi’s vehicle head in the opposite direction. She wondered where he was taking Ke Jie.
Two hours later, Lan Qingqing got out near the police station. It was already midnight. As she stepped down from the car, she felt light-headed, as if her feet were barely touching the ground. She took a couple of steps forward but nearly stumbled. Thinking it was due to hunger sapping her strength, she opened the bread and milk that Hou Yi had given her.
The food was from a convenience store; the bread was filled with strawberry jam. She devoured it eagerly and drank deeply from the milk bottle. Yet even after finishing, she still felt dizzy.
It suddenly struck her that she hadn’t taken her medication all day long. The doctor had warned her that those daily pills needed to be taken on time and after meals; missing even one day could be dangerous. She touched her increasingly tight chest; even her heartbeat felt different than usual. She had pushed herself beyond limits today—searching for Ke Jie and trying to bring down Hua Rongxiao—without a moment's rest. Thankfully, things had turned out well in the end.
As she stood up, her legs began to tingle with numbness that spread through her body, followed by an inexplicable sharp pain. It dawned on her that her life might be nearing its end.
Struggling to keep herself upright, she walked toward the police station entrance. Passing by a small convenience store, she caught a glimpse of herself in its glass wall. Her reflection showed a face that was no longer natural or beautiful—her cheeks were sunken and her eyes were red like those of a living dead person. No wonder everyone who passed by had avoided her.
She found it laughable—how ridiculous people were! She had gone through surgery to gain their admiration and become beautiful but ended up being repulsed instead.
She didn’t understand what all this effort was for anymore.
As she stepped through the doors of the police station, she felt completely drained of energy. She could see the brightly lit lobby ahead but suddenly noticed that her other eye—previously healthy—had also become blurry.
In just five seconds, she lost sight in that eye as well; she was completely blind now.
She went to a place where her heart and body were lost, her eyes plunged into endless darkness. Fear began to grip her, and she started to scream. Crying out for help, the tears streaming from her eyes turned into warm blood.
It was as if she heard familiar voices. She heard the voice of her mother, He Shui Xian, and the voice of Zhang Huizhi, the one she had caused to die. The voices of the departed were calling out to her.
Nearby, a police officer stepped forward to support her, but she frantically pushed everyone away. She tore off the skull bracelet from her wrist, knowing that her life was coming to an end. She understood that this brief existence of hers was about to conclude right here.
Holding up the bracelet with closed eyes, she shouted repeatedly, "Hua Rongxiao killed Ge Miao! Hua Rongxiao killed Ge Miao! This is Ge Miao's bone! Hua Rongxiao killed Ge Miao!"
After shouting these words, she grabbed a pair of hands nearby, crying and pleading, "Where is Tong Le? Can you help me call Tong Le? She is my best friend; she won't ignore me. She is my only friend now."
With those words hanging in the air, Lan Qingqing collapsed before everyone's eyes. Unable to wait for help, she breathed her last in that courtyard.
