At the edge of the small town, before the eerie Ancient Manor, the wind howled fiercely, and large raindrops pounded against the ground, splashing up layers of water. A police car and a black sedan came to a sudden stop at the manor's entrance. Several police officers clad in raincoats emerged from the police car, their expressions grave as they gazed at the manor that exuded an unsettling aura, sensing that this would be a challenging case. Shortly after, a tall man stepped out of the black sedan; he was Detective Lin.
"Detective Lin, this case is truly bizarre. The scene is in complete disarray, and we have no leads at all, which is why we called you for assistance," said Officer Li, stepping forward to address Lin.
Lin nodded slightly, his gaze piercing through the rain curtain, fixated on the tightly shut door of the manor, a wave of inexplicable unease washing over him. Taking a deep breath, he said, "Let's go take a look at the crime scene."
The two men held up their umbrellas and hurried toward the manor's entrance. Just as they reached the door, it slowly creaked open, revealing a stern-looking middle-aged man; he was the owner of the manor, Chen Hao.
"You've finally arrived. Come in," Chen Hao's voice was deep and hoarse, as if it came from the depths of hell.
Lin and Officer Li exchanged glances before stepping into the mysterious manor. The courtyard inside was overgrown with weeds, an air of neglect enveloping them. They followed Chen Hao through the courtyard to a grand villa. The villa's door stood wide open, dim light spilling out from within, faintly revealing a smell of blood.
Upon entering the villa, Lin saw a body lying on the living room floor, blood having congealed into a dark red pool beneath it. The corpse's face was contorted in terror and despair. Lin crouched down to examine the body closely and noticed multiple fatal wounds; the cuts were clean and sharp, seemingly inflicted by some kind of pointed weapon.
"Where were you at the time of the incident?" Lin stood up and fixed his sharp gaze on Chen Hao.
"I was resting in my room; I only came over after hearing commotion," Chen Hao replied expressionlessly.
"Did anyone else see you in your room?"
"No, my room is on the other side of the villa; very few people go there."
Lin frowned slightly, his suspicion toward Chen Hao intensifying. Just then, a young maid rushed over in a panic.
"Officer! I... I have something to say," her voice trembled with fear.
Officer Li quickly turned to look at the flustered maid, his eyes revealing urgency and anticipation. "Don't be afraid, take your time and tell us what you saw."
Maid Lily took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down, but her trembling hands betrayed her inner fear. "Last night, it rained heavily. I went to deliver documents to Mr. Chen. As I passed through the corridor, I saw a shadow that moved incredibly fast; it disappeared in an instant." She swallowed hard before continuing, "And I heard very strange sounds—like someone was quietly crying but also like someone was angrily roaring."
Lin narrowed his eyes slightly and stepped closer to ask softly, "Lily, are you sure that was around the time of the incident? What did the shadow look like? Could you see its face?"
Lily furrowed her brow as she struggled to recall. "I can confirm the time; it was when I returned after delivering the documents. The shadow was tall and somewhat thin. It moved too quickly for me to see its face clearly."
